Inpatients of psychosomatic rehabilitation with a latent or manifest desire for a pension are a risk group with regard to successful participation in rehabilitation and return to work. Reaching this group of patients, is both a legal requirement (rehabilitation before retirement), and important from an economic and health perspective. This study examines patients who are considering applying for a reduced earning capacity. The questions are whether these patients differ in socio-demographic variables and the success of rehabilitation from patients without pension considerations, and which patients benefitted from their rehabilitation despite pension considerations. Particular attention is paid to the therapeutic relationship.
Data are routinely collected from patients of 2 rehabilitation clinics who were undergoing inpatient psychosomatic treatment between October 2012 and February 2017 (n=8503).
Inpatients with pension considerations were slightly older, more often incapacitated for work and more often receiving unemployment benefits. Both groups reported a significant reduction in symptoms over the course of the rehabilitation. Within the group considering retirement, patients who reported an improvement in symptoms reported a more positive relationship satisfaction.

A balance between stress and resources is necessary for performance and well-being. The aim of the study was to examine correlations between the risk of burnout and human resources in order to derive approaches for preventive measures. A total of 200 teachers from Magdeburg and the surrounding area took part in the study (age 43.6±12.6 years). The MBI-GS inventory was used to determine the burnout risk. Stress processing strategies as personal resources were recorded using the stress processing form (SVF). A risk of burnout was found in nine (4.5%) teachers, 68 (34%) suffered from at least some burnout symptoms. There were significantly more negative stress processing strategies among educators at risk of burnout. As a preventive measure, a resource-oriented approach should be strengthened in order to maintain the health of the teachers and to prevent development of burnout syndrome.The evaluation of neuromodulator treatment outcomes can be performed by noninvasive surface-derived facial electromyography (fEMG) which can detect cumulative muscle fiber activity deep to the skin. The objective of the present study is to identify the most reliable facial locations where the motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) of various facial muscles can be quantified during fEMG measurements. The study population consisted of five males and seven females (31.0 [12.9] years, body mass index of 22.15 [1.6] kg/m2). Facial muscle activity was assessed in several facial regions in each patient for their respective muscle activity utilizing noninvasive surface-derived fEMG. Variables of interest were the average root mean square of three performed muscle contractions (= signal) (µV), mean root mean square between those contraction with the face in a relaxed facial expression (= baseline noise) (µV), and the signal to noise ratio (SNR). A total of 1,709 processed fEMG signals revealed one specific reliable location in each investigated region based on each muscle's anatomy, on the highest value of the SNR, on the lowest value for the baseline noise, and on the practicability to position the sensor while performing a facial expression. The results of this exploratory study may help guiding future researchers and practitioners in designing study protocols and measuring individual facial MUAP when utilizing fEMG. Our study aimed to research the glucose-lowering effect of berberine in diabetic rats and to reveal the possible role of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Diabetic rats induced by administration of a high-calorie diet and streptozocin tail vein injection were assessed by the oral glucose tolerance test. Then, the diabetic rats were divided into two groups, those with or without the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene downregulated, respectively, followed by treatment including berberine for 6 weeks. Results of this study show that the administration of berberine downregulated levels of fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin, and ameliorated insulin resistance in diabetic rats. Treatment with berberine inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity, and upregulated acetylcholine levels in the serum and alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene expression in the liver tissue. Meanwhile, berberine reversed elevated expression of cytokines interleukin-1β and TNF-α in the serum and downregulated nuclear factor κB expression. However, berberine administration showed no glucose-lowering or anti-inflammatory effect in diabetic rats in which alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene expression was downregulated, and acetylcholinesterase activity was also significantly inhibited. In conclusion, berberine may ameliorate glucose metabolism by activating the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-mediated cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway.
