There were no significant performance differences. Consumption of a single bolus of CHO beverage before a 3-hour run elicits significant alterations in energy metabolism compared with just water, with S CHO oxidizing significantly more fat than a rapidly digested carbohydrate. These findings suggest that slow-digesting modified starch provides a consistent blood glucose level and sustained exogenous energy supply during a sustained, 3-hour endurance run. J Strength Cond Res 35(5) 1256-1261, 2021-The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of skeletal muscle uptake of creatine monohydrate (Cr H2O) with that of creatine bound to polyethylene glycol (Cr PEG). Healthy men (X ± SE; age = 23.5 ± 1.0 years) were divided into control (Con, n = 9, 20 g·d-1 of Cr H2O) and experimental (Exp, n = 8, 10 g·d-1 of Cr PEG) groups. Blood samples and muscle biopsies were used to determine acute gastrointestinal absorption over 5 hours and muscle cellular uptake over 5 days. Both groups exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) elevated concentrations of muscle-free Cr (M·gdw-1; Con, pre = 23.0 ± 4.2, post = 39.2 ± 2.7; Exp pre = 22.1 ± 2.9, post = 33.6 ± 3.2), total Cr (M·gdw-1, Con pre = 94.7 ± 5.4, post = 114.8 ± 7.4; Exp pre = 92.6 ± 5.4, post = 106.6 ± 8.4), which were also elevated when these values were normalized for a concentrations for the Exp group were lower and were still rising at 5 hours (4.05 ± 0.87). The integrated area under the curve for the 5-hour postingestion period was 7-fold greater for the Con group. Although total Cr ingested over the 5 days supplementation period was less for the Cr PEG group, skeletal muscle uptake of Cr PEG was similar to Cr H2O. Based on circulating Cr concentrations, it seems that Cr PEG is cleared more slowly from the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, lower dosages of Cr may be ingested while maintaining optimal loading kinetics.

J Strength Cond Res 35(5) 1223-1228, 2021-The time of year in which an athlete is born may provide an advantage developmentally for competition, known as relative age effects (RAEs). The presence of RAEs in sport may result in athletes participating less or leaving the sport early. To determine if RAEs exist in elite Olympic weightlifting, data were examined from the past 5 Olympic Games. Using retrospective competition data, a total of 953 weightlifters (595 men and 358 women) who competed in the Olympic Games between 2000 and 2016 were included in this study. Athletes were divided into lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight for analysis. Using the subset weight classes, the observed date of birth distribution vs. the expected worldwide date of birth distribution were compared using multiple chi square tests. Relative age effects were present overall for weightlifters (χ2 = 189.428, p < 0.001), with over-reprge effects were also present in men lightweight (χ2 = 74.773, p less then 0.001), men middleweight (χ2 = 41.786, p less then 0.001), men heavyweight (χ2 = 39.395, p less then 0.001), and women lightweight (χ2 = 37.251, p less then 0.001). Determining that RAEs are present in weightlifting is important because it will help maintain the amount of opportunity for all athletes regardless of when they were born in the year. Coaches should be aware of the possible advantages of training age and the effect of physical maturation as a result of these RAEs. Coaches may use this information for athlete selection, but the presence of RAEs should not discourage athletes from participating in the sport of weightlifting.

J Strength Cond Res 35(5) 1217-1222, 2021-The purpose of this study was to determine if successive heavy sets of back squats can augment the concentric velocity of a lighter down set performed by strength-trained men. Twelve trained men with experience in the back squat volunteered to perform a 5 repetition maximum (5RM) along with 2 separate squat sessions consisting of 3 sets of 5 repetitions with 85% of their 5RM. One condition involved performing a "down set" (DS) after the 3 working sets at 85% of 5RM equivalent to 60% of the working-set load that was also performed during the warm-up. A "No down set" condition involved performing an additional warm-up set before the working sets with 60% of the working-set load instead of the down set to determine if velocity was augmented because of postactivation potentiation in the DS condition. In both conditions, 3 minutes of rd a repeated measures analysis of variance was used to assess differences in MCVs between sets performed at 60% of the working-set load. Cohen's d effect sizes were reported for all comparisons, and the critical alpha was set at p ≤ 0.05. No significant differences were observed in the working-set MCVs in both conditions (p = 0.412, d = 0.246) or between MCVs in the down set and equivalent warm-up set load in the DS condition (p = 0.270, d = 0.002).Although performing a down set may still be efficacious for developing power across a broad spectrum of loads, the results of this study suggest successive heavy sets of back squats do not acutely augment down set concentric velocity in strength-trained men.

Twenty, young adult female subjects (age, 20.9 ± 1.3 years; height, 164.6 ± 7.5 cm; mass 63.2 ± 8.8 kg) with an intermediate level of resistance training experience completed the study. Three repetitions were completed at 80% of the 1-repetition maximum.
