Polymeric films for various biomedical applications require to be biocompatible and non- toxic. Chemical route of modifications for functionalization of the films for improved properties lead to undesirable effects for biological applications. Hence a natural way to enhancing their properties is by functionalizing them using plant extracts. This report investigates the synthesis of bioactive phytochemical loaded polymer using Triticum aestivum (wheatgrass) extract incorporated in tripolyphosphate crosslinked chitosan. Physical and mechanical properties of the extract functionalized crosslinked chitosan were analyzed and this showed significant changes in thickness, tensile strength and % elongation of the blend. The extract functionalized chitosan was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDAX) confirming the interaction between the functional moieties of the extract and polymer. Antimicrobial analysis showed improved activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococus aureus and Candida albicans. Presence of the extract in crosslinked chitosan enhanced the cytocompatibility in 3T3 cells carried out by MTT assay and showed improved cell migration properties determined by scratch assay.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.Motor skill acquisition utilizes a wide array of neural structures; however, few articles evaluate how the relative contributions of these structures shift over the course of learning. Recent evidence from rodents and songbirds suggests there is a transfer from cortical to subcortical structures following intense, repetitive training. Evidence from humans indicate that the reticulospinal system is modulated over the course of skill acquisition and may be a subcortical facilitator of learning. The objective of this study was to evaluate how reticulospinal contributions are modulated by task expertise. Reticulospinal contributions were assessed using StartReact (SR). We hypothesized that expert typists would show SR during an individuated, keystroke task but SR would be absent in novices. Expert (75.2 ± 9.8 WPM) and novice typists (41.6 ± 8.2 WPM) were evaluated during an individuated, keystroke movements. In experts, SR was present but was absent in novices. Together, these results suggest that experts use reticulospinal contributions more for movement than novices indicating that the reticular formation becomes increasingly important for movement execution in highly trained, skilled tasks even those that require individuated movement of the fingers.Alkaptonuria (AKU) is an autosomal recessive disorder, which is caused by a site-specific mutation(s) and thus, impaired the function of Homogentisate-1, 2-dioxygenase (HGD), an essential enzyme for the catabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine. Among frameshift, intronic, splice-site and missense mutations, the latter has been the most common form of genetic variations for the disease. How do the acquired mutations in HGD correlate with the disease? Systematic staged-screening of some sixty-five mutations, which are known to have a relation with the disease, by GVGD, SIFT, SNAP, PANTHER, SDM, PHD-SNP, Meta-SNP, Pmut and Mutpred methods, showed that mutations, W60G, A122D and V300G are potentially related with the severity of AKU. Detailed analyses on molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) of these mutants against the wild-type HGD reveal the loss of structural and molecular dynamic properties of the enzyme. Further, the observed conformational flexibility in mutants at targeted peptide segments seems to have a relation with the impairment of the function of HGD. Taken together, the study involves a designed computational methodology to analyse the disease-associated nsSNPs for AKU, the knowledge of which seems to have potential applications in drug therapies for the disease in particular and other similar systems in general.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.Research on abortion stigma has given insight into how women experience abortion, tell stories about abortion, and make decisions about abortion. Stigma encompasses a range of feelings, experiences and discourses that can make having an abortion a negative experience or one that women might wish to conceal. This paper explores how abortion stigma is both classed and embodied, using the life stories of 15 middle-class women who have had abortions in England in 'neoliberal times'. It argues that the women's class position gave them access to various discursive resources with which to articulate their abortion stories, shaping their experiences and narration of stigma. It also draws attention to the ways in which both class and stigma are 'made through marking' on the body, and thus to the under-theorised embodied aspects of abortion stigma. In doing so, it argues that abortion stigma acts as a regulatory 'technology of the self' that is enabled by middle-class practices of self-control.An 8-mo-old, crossbred, heifer calf was presented to the Heeke Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory with a history of ataxia and altered mentation. Grossly, the liver was diffusely yellow-orange, turgid, and exuded watery, thin blood on cut section. The cortex and medulla in both kidneys were diffusely and markedly dark brown to black. The urinary bladder was filled with dark red urine. The gross and histologic lesions supported a high level of suspicion for copper toxicosis. Feed and water samples from the farm were submitted for mineral analysis. The copper concentration in the feed was 118 mg/kg, and the molybdenum concentration was 0.9 mg/kg. Chronic copper toxicosis is rarely reported in cattle. The gross lesions in our case are a departure from, although similar to, previously reported cases, including lack of histologic hepatocellular necrosis. Collectively, gross and histologic lesions were compatible with copper toxicosis in this calf, and copper concentrations in the feed samples suggest a feed-mixing error.
