8% of those without HIV (P less then 0.001). In multivariate analysis, HIV serostatus, history of sexually transmitted infections, having male sexual partners, and practice of anal sex were correlated significantly with detection of any type of HPV. Additionally, both oncogenic and non-oncogenic HPV types were significantly associated with anal cytology dysplasia. CONCLUSIONS We strongly suggest that there should be awareness of anal HPV infection and related anal cellular dysplasia in at-risk populations. None of the biomarkers currently in use for clinical practice has adequate prognostic value, so it is not possible to clearly distinguish neonates with culture-proven sepsis from those with only risk factors or clinical suspicion. Endocan is an endothelial mediator involved in the inflammatory response that is present in low concentrations in the serum of healthy subjects, and in much higher concentrations in patients with SIRS and septic shock. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the utility of serum endocan serum levels as a biomarker for the diagnosis of neonatal early onset sepsis (EOS). METHODOLOGY Serum endocan concentration was measured in newborns with clinical suspicion of EOS admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on day 1, 3 and 7. RESULTS Serum endocan levels were significantly increased in septic compared to non-septic neonates in the early stages of sepsis (2.43 ± 0.95 vs. 1.77 ± 0.57, p = 0.004), continued to rise up to 72 hours from onset and then decreased by the seventh day under treatment. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest a potential role for endocan as an early marker for diagnosis and follow-up in neonatal EOS. Studies on a larger number of cases are needed in order to establish the practical utility of this molecule as a diagnostic tool for clinical practice. Because TB is disseminated through the sputum of infected persons, individuals who maintain relations with a TB patient are at high risk of infection; this risk is greater when contacts present an inadequate nutritional status. The aim of this work was to analyse and compare the nutritional status and macro and micronutrient intake of TB patients and their household contacts. METHODOLOGY A cross-sectional study was carried out in TB patients from Nuevo Leon, México, and their household contacts. Thirty-nine patients diagnosed with TB and 62 contacts were evaluated. Anthropometric evaluation was performed considering weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio (WHR); nutrient intake was evaluated by applying 24-hour dietary recalls. RESULTS According to anthropometric assessment, the study population showed a greater trend towards being overweight and obese; 62% of TB patients and contacts had this type of malnutrition, while only 8% of individuals were undernourished. A greater tendency towards malnutrition was observed in the TB patient group. CONCLUSIONS TB patients and their contacts presented as overweight and obese. Both groups showed similar patterns in macro and micronutrient intake. Implications of deficiencies in the intake of these nutrients are discussed on the basis of their effects on individual health. METHODOLOGY During 3 years, all hospitalized patients at the University-affiliated hospital of Tlemcen and presenting urinary tract infections caused by E. coli were considered as potential study participants. These E. coli isolates were examined phenotypically for ESBL production. ESBL strains were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing and were investigated for the presence of plasmid mediated quinolone resistance genes, 16SrRNA methylase genes and virulence genes by using conventional PCR and DNA sequencing. The molecular characterization of ESBL strains was established by phylogenetic grouping method and ERIC-PCR. RESULTS The overall prevalence of ESBL was 32.5%. The blaCTX-M-15 was the most frequently detected in ESBL isolates, followed by blaCTX-M-14, blaCTX-M-28, blaCTX-M-1 and blaSHV-12 respectively. The plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes were detected in the 15 ESBL strains with the aac(6')-Ib-cr gene was the most detected followed by qnrB1 and qnrA1 gene respectively. Among the 22 ESBL isolates resistant to gentamicin and amikacin, the 16SrRNA methylase genes were detected in 4 isolates. JTC-801 molecular weight The sfa and pap virulent genes were founds in 26% and 22% of isolates receptively. The genotyping analysis of all strains revealed that almost were belonged to phylogenetic groups A1 and A0 and fourteen distinct clones. CONCLUSION The emergence of uropathogenic ESBL isolates and the high rate of blaCTX-M are alarming in Algeria. Strict measure must be required to control the further spread of these strains in Algerian hospitals. Carbapenemases producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a growing global public health concern as this pathogen is easily transmissible among patients. Metallo-Beta-lactamases is the most important class of these carbapenemases with their broad-spectrum resistance profile. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of MBL-producing P. aeruginosa collected in an Algerian hospital. METHODOLOGY All Metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-producing P. aeruginosa isolates recovered from patients during a 2 years period (2015-2016) were studied using a combination of phenotypic and molecular typing methods (susceptibility testing, molecular characterization of carbapenemase-encoding genes, multi-locus sequence typing and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis). RESULTS A total of twenty-six MBL producing P. aeruginosa of 188 isolates were investigated. The burns unit ranked in the first position of the majority of identified cases with 73.
