River flow characterizes the integrated response from watersheds, so it is essential to quantify to understand the changing water cycle and underpin the sustainable management of freshwaters. However, river gauging stations are in decline with ground-based observation networks shrinking. This study proposes a novel approach of estimating river flows using the Planet CubeSats constellation with the possibility to monitor on a daily basis at the sub-catchment scale through remote sensing. The methodology relates the river discharge to the water area that is extracted from the satellite image analysis. As a testbed, a series of Surface Reflectance PlanetScope images and observed streamflow data in Araguaia River (Brazil) were selected to develop and validate the methodology. The study involved the following steps (1) survey of measurements of water level and river discharge using in-situ data from gauge-based Conventional Station (CS) and measurements of altimetry using remote data from JASON-2 Virtual Station (prove water management, particularly in developing countries where the presence of conventional stations is often very limited. There is a growing recognition of the broader environmental significance of exploring the relative importance of climate change and anthropogenic impacts on hydrologic fluctuations in river-lake systems. In the case of Dongting Lake, the typical river-lake system, we collected the water level from 1990 to 2019, spanning before and after the operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) in 2003. This study was conducted to detect water level fluctuations in Dongting Lake and to quantify the relative influence of climate, land cover and dam construction on water levels. We defined the impact of the dam construction as the three inlets inflow of Yangtze River (In-YR), and four waters inflow of Hunan (In-HN). The Mann-Kendall (M-K) test revealed the trends and change points of water level fluctuations. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to detect the direct and indirect effects of these factors on water level and quantify their relative importance. The MIKE21 hydrodynamic model reflected the spatial-temporal variability of water levels under the action of key driver. The results showed that the water level appeared a downward trend during 1990-2019 and the change point appeared in 2003; During 1990-2002, the significant factors were precipitation (V = 0.469, P = 0.013), evaporation (V = -0.424, P = 0.029), non-agricultural cover (V = -0.334, P = 0.025), and agricultural cover (V = 0.235, P = 0.033); During 2003-2019, the significant factors were In-YR (V = 0.436, P = 0.007), In-HN (V = 0.431, P = 0.012), and precipitation (V = 0.349, P = 0.045); The In-YR was the key factor affecting the changes of the water level during 1990-2019; Under the influence of In-YR, the most obvious fluctuation of water level was in the flood adjustment period (Jun-Aug) and the impoundment period (Sep-Nov) when the average declined by about 0.50 and 0.67 m, respectively. Our findings provide a new insight into how to better maintain the stability of river-water system water resources under the influence of multiple factors.Arsenic is an important hazardous metalloid commonly found in polluted soil, rivers and groundwater. However, few studies exist regarding the effect of arsenic trioxide (ATO) on the gut-liver axis and consequent hepatotoxicity in waterfowl. Here, we investigated the influence of ATO on duck intestines and livers, and explored the role of the gut-liver axis in ATO-induced hepatotoxicity and intestinal toxicity. Our results demonstrated that ATO-exposure induced intestinal damage, liver inflammatory cell infiltration and vesicle steatosis. Additionally, the intestinal microbiota community in ATO-exposed ducks displayed significantly decreased α-diversity and an altered bacterial composition. Moreover, ATO-exposure markedly reduced the expression of intestinal barrier-related proteins (Claudin-1, MUC2, ZO-1 and Occludin), resulting in increased intestinal permeability and elevated lipopolysaccharide levels. Simultaneously, ATO-exposure also upregulated pyroptosis-related index levels in the liver and jejunum, and increased pro-inflammatory cytokine production (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-18, and IL-1β). Our further mechanistic studies showed that ATO-induced liver and jejunum inflammation were provoked by the activation of the LPS/TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway and NLRP3 inflammasome. In summary, these results manifested that ATO exposure can cause liver and jejunal inflammation and pyroptosis, and the indirect gut-liver axis pathway may play an essential role in the potential mechanism of ATO-induced hepatotoxicity.
Elemental analysis has been increasingly used for biomonitoring heavy metals and trace elements.

This study monitored the levels of two heavy metals (Al and Pb), and seven trace elements (Macroelements Mg, K, P and Ca; Microelements Zn, Cu, Fe) in scalp hair of 57 children with severe autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 50 age-matched controls, using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrophotometry (ICP-AES).

Compared to controls, significantly higher levels of Al (p =  0.001), Pb (p =  0.001) and K (p =  0.021), with lower levels of Mg and Zn (p = 0.038) were observed for the ASD group. ASD boys had higher levels of Al (p =  0.001), Pb (p =  0.001) and K (p =  0.017) than control boys, while ASD girls had higher Pb levels (p =  0.005) than control girls. The ASD subgroup exposed to passive smokers had higher levels of Al (p =  0.033) and Pb (p =  0.001, and the ASD subgroup not exposed to passive smoke had higher levels of Al (p =  0.011), Pb (p =  0.001), K (p =  0.003); and lower levels of Mg (p =  0.011) than their controls. VX-745 concentration Other confounding factors and the correlation between these elements were also investigated.

This data suggests that exposure to Al and Pb, increase intake of K, and decreased intake of magnesium and zinc, may contribute to ASD etiology.
