COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the way things are done in walks of life including nursing education in both developing and developed countries. Nursing schools all over the world as well as in developing countries responded to the pandemic following the guidelines of the World Health Organisation and different countries specific guidelines regarding the pandemic.
This reflective piece aims to describe the effect of COVID-19 on nursing education in developing countries.
Face-to-face teaching and learning were converted to virtual remote learning and clinical experiences suspended to protect the students from the pandemic. Specific but broader responses to the pandemic in the Caribbean and other developing countries have been shaped by financial, political and other contextual factors, especially the level of information technology infrastructure development, and the attendant inequities in access to such technology between the rural and urban areas. Internet accessibility, affordability and reliability i responding, coping and recovering quickly from future occurrences.
Psychological comorbidity is common in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and is correlated with decreased overall and disease-specific quality of life (QoL). Prior research reported that anxiety and depression, as measured by the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), are associated with worse CRS-specific QoL, as assessed via the Rhinosinusitis Disability Index (RSDI). Furthermore, patients prone to anxiety/depression may display an exaggerated response to real or anticipated discomfort; the pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) is a validated instrument designed to measure this phenomenon. This study is intended to explore the role of pain catastrophizing in relation to anxiety, depression, and disease-specific QoL in patients with facial pain attributed to CRS.
Prospective cohort study.
Diagnosis of presumed CRS was based upon current American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) guidelines; all participants reported facial pain as a component of their CRS symptomatology. RSDI, HADS, and PCS questionnaires were administered upon presentation prior to intervention, and objective measurements of sinonasal inflammation were obtained via nasal endoscopy and computed tomography (CT).
Seventy-five patients were enrolled in the study. Significant positive correlations were found between PCS and HADS, total RSDI, and RSDI emotional sub-scores (P < .05). The incidence of objective evidence of disease, as measured via nasal endoscopy and CT, was not significantly different in catastrophizing patients.
Pain catastrophizing correlates with anxiety/depression and worse disease-specific QoL in patients meeting symptomatic criteria for CRS. Otolaryngologists should be aware that catastrophic thinking can intensify a patient's perception of sinonasal symptoms, and clinicians may consider management of psychological comorbidity to optimize rhinologic outcomes.

4 Laryngoscope, 2021.A fundamental and ubiquitous phenomenon in chemistry is the contraction of both C-H and C-C bonds as the carbon atoms involved vary, in s-p hybridization, along sp3 to sp2 to sp. Our quantum chemical bonding analyses based on Kohn-Sham molecular orbital theory show that the generally accepted rationale behind this trend is incorrect. Inspection of the molecular orbitals and their corresponding orbital overlaps reveals that the above-mentioned shortening in C-H and C-C bonds is not determined by an increasing amount of s-character at the carbon atom in these bonds. Beck, the generic elements of the relationship including expressed empathy, expressions of positive regard, agreement on goals, and agreement on tasks within a therapeutic bond were considered a necessary condition for change. Alliance ruptures can therefore have a detrimental effect on therapy if left unrepaired. This article contributes to the In-Session issue on rupture repairs by outlining the role of the alliance as a component of the therapeutic relationship in CBT and illustrates how ruptures can be identified and effectively resolved through detailed case examples. Given the central importance of using collaborative empiricism and Socratic dialogue for the therapeutic relationship in CBT, we demonstrate the distinctive role of these elements in repairing ruptures.
Representing the largest proportion of healthcare workers, nurses play a significant role in oral health (OH) maintenance as part of a larger effort to promote holistic patient care. The study aims to determine nursing students' perceptions of OH education and practice in Malaysian and Australian nursing schools.
A self-administered questionnaire (content- and face-validated) survey was undertaken, classroom style, amongst final-year nursing students from selected Malaysian (n=122, Response rate=97.6%) and Australian (n=299, Response rate=54.7%) institutions. Quantitative data were analysed via Statistical Package for Social Science software (Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests, p≤0.01).
Significantly more Malaysian nursing students, compared to those in Australia, reported having encountered patients with OH issues (98.4% vs. 82.9%), namely halitosis (87.7% vs. 62.2%), oral ulcers (63.1% vs. 41.1%), oral/dental trauma (36.9% vs. 21.1%) and caries in children (28.7% vs. 7.7%). Less than half of Malaysian and Australian nursing students reported that they received adequate OH training (48.4% vs. 36.6%, p≤0.01), especially in detecting oral cancer (18.0.0% vs. 22.6%, p≤0.01) and preventing oral diseases (46.7% vs. 41.7%, p≤0.01). Students in both countries demonstrated positive attitudes and believed in their role in OH care. Most students agreed that they should receive training in OH, especially in smoking cessation and providing OH care for patients with special needs. They also opined that a standardized evidence-based oral hygiene protocol is needed.
Support for education and practice in this area of patient care suggested positive implications for further development of nurses' roles in OH promotion and management.
