The most common thoracic injury in children, resulting in trauma, is pulmonary contusion (PC). Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are used in wound healing and many other diseases. This study aims to examine the effects of BM-MSCs on PC healing in rats.
A total of 45 male Wistar albino rats were used. Four groups were formed. BM-MSCs were labeled with the green fluorescent protein. PC was observed in the control group. In group II, PC occured and left to spontaneous healing. In group III, PC formed and BM-MSCs were given. In group IV, BM-MSCs were given without PC formation. Subjects were sacrificed 1 week later. Whether there was any difference in terms of BM-MSC involvement and lung injury score was investigated. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 17.0, software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL), and p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
BM-MSCs were collected much more in the lungs in group III than in group IV. Group III had a lower lung injury score value than group II.
The greater involvement of the BM-MSCs in the injury site, and further reductions in lung injury score suggest that BM-MSCs are contributing to the healing of the injury. The use of BM-MSCs in risky patients with diffuse PC may be an alternative treatment to conventional methods.

Lymph node (LN) yield is a key quality indicator that is associated with improved staging in surgically resected gastric cancer. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends a yield of ≥15 LNs for proper staging, yet most facilities in the United States fail to achieve this number. The present study aimed to identify factors that could affect LN yield on a facility level and identify outlier hospitals.
This was a retrospective review of adults (aged ≥18y) with gastric cancer (Tumor-Node-Metastasis Stages I-III) who underwent gastrectomy. Data were analyzed from the National Cancer Database (2004-2016). Multivariate analysis identified patient and tumor characteristics, whereas an observed-to-expected ratio of identified outlier hospitals. Facility factors were compared between high and low outliers.
A total of 26,590 patients were included in this study. Of these patients, only 50.3% had an LN yield ≥15. The multivariate model of patient and tumor characteristics demonstrated a concordance index was 0.684. A total of 1245 facilities were included. There were 198 low outlier LN yield hospitals and 135 high outlier LN yield hospitals (observed-to-expected ratio of 0.42±0.24 versus 1.38±0.19, P<0.0001). There was a difference in facility type between low and high outliers (P<0.0001). High LN yield hospitals had a larger surgical volume than low LN yield hospitals (median 8.4 [4.9, 13.5] versus 3.5 [2.4, 5.2]; P<0.0001).

In this approach, magnetic nanoparticle Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-alkyne was synthesized with Fe3O4 core preparation, SiO2 coating, and alkyne functionalization on the surface. The azides were successfully integrated onto the cell surface of the recombinant E. coli harboring glycerol dehydrogenase, which was employed as the model cell. The highest immobilization yield of 83% and activity recovery of 94% were obtained under the conditions of 0.67 mg mg-1 cell-support ratio, pH 6.0, temperature 45 °C, and 20 mM Cu2+ concentration. The immobilized cell showed good reusability, which remained over 50% of initial activity after 10 cycles of utilization. Its activity was 9.7-fold higher than that of the free cell at the condition of pH 8.0 and each optimal temperature. Furthermore, the immobilized cell showed significantly higher activity, operational stability, and reusability.Conductive materials presented promising advantages for enhancing anaerobic digestion (AD) performance. This study evaluated the effects of activated carbon (AC) and nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) on the acidogenesis and whole AD to explore their potential mechanisms. AC increased the content of lactic and propionic acids in acidogenesis. nZVI increased the production of formic acid, acetic acid and H2 in acidogenesis, thus significantly promoted the methane yield in the whole AD. Mechanism exploration proved that AC enriched Trichococcus, and norank_f__Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17, and then improved the activity of enzymes involved in the production of lactic and propionic acids. nZVI buffered the pH to increase the activity of pyruvate formate-lyase (PFL) in formic acid production. Furthermore, nZVI enriched the Methanobacterium which use H2 and formic acid as substrate. The research paves pathway for the efficient enhancement of conductive materials added novel AD process.
