The current study investigated whether consonance (imperfect consonance major third) and dissonance (minor second) would capture attention differently when they occurred as chords (combinations of two tones) that were deviant from their context. In addition, we also examined how task demand would modulate these chords' attentional capture. For this investigation, we used an auditory three-stimulus oddball paradigm in which these chords were presented as deviant stimuli (5% each) among frequent standard (80%) and infrequent target (10%) pure tones. The task difficulty was manipulated by changing pitch intervals between standard and target tones. The results showed that these chords elicited dual-peak P3a, and that consonance enhanced the late phase of P3a compared to dissonance, only when the task demand was high. These findings revealed that deviant consonance and dissonance captured attention differently; in particular, consonance captured attention more strongly than dissonance, and this effect was induced by high task demand. This attentional capture difference between the chord categories was induced through enhanced focus of attention on the pitch dimension of oddball stimuli. In addition, the deviant chords might have been processed by a mechanism similar to that which processes novel stimuli, and these chords' differences might have affected not the novelty detection process, but a process which orients attentional resources to deviant chords, which were recognized as novel stimuli.Local environments are increasingly the focus of health behavior research and practice to reduce gaps between fruit/vegetable intake, physical activity (PA), and related guidelines. This study examined the congruency between youth food and PA environments and differences by region, rurality, and income across the United States. Food and PA environment data were obtained for all U.S. counties (N = 3142) using publicly available, secondary sources. Relationships between the food and PA environment tertiles was represented using five categories 1) congruent-low (county falls in both the low food and PA tertiles), 2) congruent-high (county falls in both the high food and PA tertiles), 3) incongruent-food high/PA low (county falls in high food and low PA tertiles), 4) incongruent-food low/PA high (county falls in low food and high PA tertiles), and 5) intermediate food or PA (county falls in the intermediate tertile for food and/or PA). Results showed disparities in food and PA environment congruency according to region, rurality, and income (p less then .0001 for each). Nearly 25% of counties had incongruent food and PA environments, with food high/PA low counties mostly in rural and low-income areas, and food low/PA high counties mostly in metropolitan and high-income areas. Approximately 8.7% of counties were considered congruent-high and were mostly located in the Northeast, metropolitan, and high-income areas. Congruent-low counties made up 10.0% of counties and were mostly in the South, rural, and low-income areas. National and regional disparities in environmental obesity determinants were identified that can inform targeted public health interventions.Despite the biological relevance and abundance of non-front-fanged colubroid snakes, little is known about their medical significance. Here, we describe the clinical, epidemiological, and biological aspects of bites by two colubroid species. We retrospectively analyzed cases of Xenodon merremii and Xenodon neuwiedii bites in which the offending snake was clearly identified. Nevirapine cell line Analyses included variables related to the snake and the patient, including demographic data, clinical findings, and treatments. Of the 163 cases, 123 were bites by X. merremii and 40 by X. neuwiedii. Most bites occurred in spring and summer, predominantly during the daytime. Most offending snakes were female. Bites by X. merremii juveniles were more frequent in autumn than in other seasons, whereas those by X. neuwiedii adults were in the summer. Hands and feet were the most frequently affected regions, with no significant difference between upper and lower limbs bitten by either X. merremii or X. neuwiedii. The main clinical findings were pain, transitory bleeding, erythema, and local edema. Local edema was proportionally more frequent with X. neuwiedii bites than with X. merremii bites. No patient had extensive edema or systemic envenomation. A significant association between the snout-vent-length and transitory bleeding in bites by X. merremii, but not in those by X. neuwiedii, was identified. Whole blood clotting tests were normal in all tested patients (62 cases). Sixteen patients were incorrectly treated with anti-Bothrops antivenom. In conclusion, most accidents caused by X. merremii and X. neuwiedii present mild local symptomatology. These snakes can be mistaken for lance-headed vipers, and some bites present symptoms that resemble mild bites by Bothrops sp. Physicians should be aware of X. merremii and X. neuwiedii bites to avoid unnecessary patient distress and overprescription of antivenom.Mycotoxin contamination is an ongoing and growing issue that can create health risks and even cause death. Unfortunately, there is currently a lack of specific therapy against mycotoxins with few side effects. On the other hand, the strategic expression of CXCL17 in mucosal tissues suggests that it may be involved in immune response when exposed to mycotoxins, but the exact role of CXCL17 remains largely unknown. Using Caco-2 as a cell model of the intestinal epithelial barrier (the first line of defense against mycotoxins), we showed that a strong production of ROS-dependent CXCL17 was triggered by mycotoxins via p38 and JNK pathways. Under the mycotoxins stress, CXCL17 modulated enhanced immuno-protective response with a remission of inflammation and apoptosis through PI3K/AKT/mTOR. Based on our observed feedback of CXCL17 to the mycotoxins, we developed the CXCL17-mimetic peptides in silico (CX1 and CX2) that possessed the safety and the capability to ameliorate mycotoxins-inducible inflammation and apoptosis. In this study, the identification of detoxifying feature of CXCL17 is a prominent addition to the chemokine field, pointing out a new direction for curing the mycotoxins-caused damage.
