In comparison, care assistants considered the purpose of handovers to be prepared for the responsibilities of working a shift. The discussion addresses implications of these findings, particularly consideration of how best use can be made of RN skills and knowledge in handovers.
Research is needed to identify whether care home resident safety can be linked to handover practices and how the presence of RNs in handovers in care homes affects this.
Care home managers, RNs and care workers may find this research useful in practice when considering how best to organise handovers and deploy staff in care homes for older people.

This study aimed to develop a detection scale for intimate partner violence (DS-IPV), excluding physical and sexual violence, and to validate the scale.
A cross-sectional survey was undertaken using an anonymous 26-item self-administered questionnaire with volunteer women aged 18-59 residing in one prefecture in Japan. A total of 1,937 responses were obtained, and 1,915 were valid. The responses of the 1,277 women who had a partner at the time were included in the analysis. Statistical analysis examined exploratory/confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency, and construct validity.
A four-factor scale with 22 items was extracted for the DS-IPV. In the confirmatory factor analysis, the indices of fitness supported these results. Prior to the factor analysis, the Kiser-Mayer-Olkin measurement (.936) and Bartlett's sphericity test (p < .001) showed that all samples met the statistical criteria. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was .92 for total score and varied between .70 and .90 for each of the four factors, and internal consistency was confirmed. The following four factors emerged from an oblique factor analysis, with a cumulative variance of 58.1% "arousing anxiety"; "controlling behavior"; "coercion and threat"; and "daily emotions". These four factors had a moderate correlation (.23-.48, p < .01) with each other, which indicated construct validity. Confirmatory factor analysis showed the indices of fitness supported these results.
The DS-IPV scale, a concise scale to detect and screen for potential intimate partner violence, was developed. The DS-IPV scale showed good internal consistency and construct validity.

Based on calcium alginate (Alg) and glycol chitosan (GC), an injectable double-network (DN) hydrogel has been developed as a scaffold for cell delivery and cell cocultured system. Previous studies have documented the interaction between dendritic cells (DCs) and GC or Alg hydrogel, but the potential effect of DN hydrogel on activation of DCs still remains unclear. This research was conducted to explore the immunomodulatory influence and underlying mechanisms of GC/Alg DN hydrogel on DCs in vitro and in vivo. Stimulation of DCs with DN hydrogel obviously induced the maturation of DCs in vitro. click here In vivo, DN hydrogel did not have obvious influence on the maturation of splenic DCs on postimplantation days 3, 10, and 30. Mechanistically, we found that DN hydrogel induced the maturation of DCs via phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin in vitro. It provides a novel understanding of the immunomodulatory property of DN hydrogel on DCs, which may serve as potential target for designing immune-mediated regenerative strategies.
The study purpose was to investigate whether years of clinical experience and experience of encountering heart failure affect perceptions of the need for physical assessment, and the nature of the association between perceptions and years of clinical experience.
This study was survey-based. Of hospitals in Japan with ≥200 beds, 298 hospitals were randomly selected as candidate research sites. Ultimately, 44 hospitals agreed to participate in this study. A self-administered questionnaire measuring 48 physical assessment skills was developed and distributed to nurses. The questionnaire rated the perceived need for 48 skills assessing acute progression of heart failure.
Of 1,113 nurses sampled, 373 (33.5%) responded. Of these, 347 completed questionnaires (response rate 93.0%). Nurses' perceived need for skills involving systematic or cardiovascular system assessment decreased with clinical experience. Nurses' perceived need for skills involving cardiovascular symptoms and circulatory failure assessment increased with clinical experience. We found four patterns of change for nurses' perceptions of physical assessment skills according to clinical experience.
The findings showed that differences in nurses' perceived need for physical assessment skills were associated with differences in clinical experience. Nurses with more experience selected more suitable skills for detecting acute progression of heart failure. Nurses' perceptions of the need for specific skills were proportional to years of clinical experience, and there may be a threshold value of years of experience.

The clock-drawing test (CDT) is a widely used screening tool for detecting cognitive decline. However, normative data for Chinese individuals are scarce. Our study aimed to provide standardized values for the three quantitative CDT scoring methods that were tailored for Chinese-speaking adults in Shijiazhuang City and explore the discriminant validity of the CDT scores in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
We conducted the CDT among 418 healthy individuals aged between 35 and 84years. The CDT was administered and scored by five raters using the method derived from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Rouleau's, and Babins' scoring systems. The influence of age, education, and sex on the performance in the CDT was analyzed. Furthermore, 336 patients with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled to explore the discriminant validity of CDT scores.
In all three scoring systems, CDT scores were significantly correlated with age and years of education but not with sex. Normative data stratified for age and years of education were established.
