Heart failure (HF) and cancer are currently two leading causes of mortality, and sometimes coexist. However, the relationship between them is not completely elucidated. We aimed to investigate whether patients with HF are predisposed to cancer development using the large Korean National Health Insurance claims database.

This study included 128,441 HF patients without a history of cancer and 642,205 age- and sex-matched individuals with no history of cancer and HF between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2015.

During a median follow-up of 4.06 years, 11,808 patients from the HF group and 40,805 participants from the control were newly diagnosed with cancer (cumulative incidence, 9.2% vs. 6.4%, p < 0.0001). Patients with HF presented a higher risk for cancer development compared to controls in multivariable Cox analysis [hazard ratio (HR) 1.64, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.61-1.68]. The increased risk was consistent for all site-specific cancers. To minimize potential surveillance bias, additional analence is higher in patients with HF than the general population. Active surveillance of coexisting malignancy needs to be considered in these patients.
Physical inactivity, high screen time, and short sleep are targets of public health initiatives for children. However, few data exist on how many U.S. children meet guidelines for these behaviors-data vital to inform which needs greater targeting. This study describes national prevalence estimates of U.S. children who meet physical activity, screen time, and sleep guidelines alone or in combination across each childhood year.

This analysis (completed in 2019) used cross-sectional data from the 2016-2017 National Survey of Children's Health, a nationally representative sample of U.S. children. Child physical activity (days per week with ≥60 minutes), recreational screen time (hours per day of TV viewing and electronic device use), and sleep duration (hours per day) were assessed through parental report. Guidelines recommend ≥60 minutes per day of physical activity, ≤2 hours per day of screen time, and 9-12 hours per day of sleep for individuals aged 6-12 years (8-10 hours for those aged 13-17 years).

Onld screen time, especially for adolescents, should be pursued.

Using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey data (2011-2012) and a mixed-effects model, individual BMI was regressed on county structural racism, controlling for county characteristics (mean age, percentage black, percentage female, percentage rural, median income, and region). Analysis occurred 2017-2019.

The study included 324,572 U.S. adults. A 7-indicator county structural racism modtrong conceptual underpinning and content validity. Further study is necessary to determine whether addressing structural racism may reduce BMI among blacks.
This study measures effects on the receipt of preventive care among children enrolled in Georgia's Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance Program associated with the implementation of new elementary school-based health centers. The study sites differed by geographic environment and predominant race/ethnicity (rural white, non-Hispanic; black, small city; and suburban Hispanic).

A quasi-experimental treatment/control cohort study used Medicaid/Children's Health Insurance Program claims/enrollment data for children in school years before implementation (2011-2012 and 2012-2013) versus after implementation (2013-2014 to 2016-2017) of school-based health centers to estimate effects on preventive care among children with (treatment) and without (control) access to a school-based health center. Data analysis was performed in 2017-2019. There were 1,531 unique children in the treatment group with an average of 4.18 school years observed and 1,737 in the control group with 4.32 school years observed. A total of health centers increased the receipt of key preventive care among young, publicly insured children in urban areas of Georgia, with potential reductions in racial and ethnic disparities.
So-called deaths of despair-those involving drug overdoses, alcohol-related liver disease, and suicide-have been rising in the U.S. among middle-aged white, non-Hispanic adults without a college degree. Premature deaths (ages 25-69) from alcoholic liver disease were examined specifically in this study from 1999 to 2018, by sex, race/Hispanic origin, and age group.

Data were drawn from the 1999-2018 Multiple Cause of Death database and bridged-race estimates of the U.S. resident population, including 281,243 alcoholic liver disease deaths or an average of 8 deaths per 100,000 population. Analyses examined alcoholic liver disease death rates for sex differences among 3 age groups (25-49, 50-59, and 60-69 years), by race and Hispanic origin, from 1999 to 2018; age-adjusted and age-specific annual percentage changes (accounted for cohorts); years of potential life lost; and age of death for sociodemographic backgrounds, alcoholic liver disease clinical courses, and comortalities.

White non-Hispanics increasingly experienced greater alcoholic liver disease mortality than black non-Hispanics and Hispanics, confirming the racial and ethnic crossover observed in previous studies. Although men consistently had higher rates of mortality, male-to-female ratios decreased in the past 2 decades and were the lowest among ages 25-49 years and especially among ages 25-34 years. Although women generally had longer life expectancies, women died of alcoholic liver disease on average about 2-3 years earlier than men.

Prevention and intervention efforts are imperative to address the narrowing sex gap and widening racial disparities in alcoholic liver disease premature deaths.
