Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been the target of considerable attention for their roles in many biological processes. Only a small portion of lncRNAs are functionally characterized, and several approaches have been proposed for investigating the roles of these molecules, including how polymorphisms in lncRNA genomic sites may interfere with their function. Allele frequency variation in single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), for example, has been associated with several diseases, including breast cancer (BC), the most common type of cancer in women.

In the present study, we performed a systematic review of lncRNA SNPs associated with BC and a meta-analysis of some lncRNA SNPs. We found 31 SNPs mapped in 12 lncRNAs associated with BC in 28 case-control studies.

Our meta-analysis showed an insignificant difference between the SNPs rs217727, rs3741219, rs2107425 and rs2839698 on H19, as well as rs920778, rs1899663, rs12826786 and rs4759314 on HOTAIR, and BC susceptibility.

The present analysis recognized the importance of extensive association studies, including different populations, and further evaluation of potential functional effects caused by lncRNA SNPs. Nevertheless, genetic variants such as SNPs in lncRNAs may play many other essential roles, although this field is still under explored.

For students studying anatomy, dissection of the human body can elicit a wide range of intellectual and emotional responses that are subject to change over the duration of a course. The purpose of this study was to determine how overall emotional responses change over time, if there are differences in responses by gender and previous laboratory exposure, and if these responses impact course performance.

First-year medical students enrolled in the Human Structure and Function course at the University of Vermont, and in the Organ Systems 1, 2, and 3 courses at Morehouse School of Medicine were given a series of four surveys across the first-year curriculum. Data were gathered regarding age, gender, and previous laboratory exposure. Students were asked to rate their level of 15 positive and negative emotions, and their desire to avoid or approach the laboratory and donors. selleck These responses were translated to three measures (a) a positive response index (PRI), (b) a negative response index (NRI), and (c) an avoid-approach index (AAI). Responses were followed longitudinally and matched with anatomy practical examination grades.

Gender and previous laboratory exposure status were both significantly related to emotional responses at different points throughout the year, and unique patterns of responses across the year emerged within each group. Higher PRI and AAI were positively correlated with some practical examination scores.

Data suggest that gender and previous laboratory exposure status influence emotional responses to dissection, and that these responses may have an effect on course performance.

The effect of tranexamic acid (TXA) remains unknown in patients with colonic diverticular bleeding, which is one of the most common causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding. We investigated the efficacy of TXA for patients with colonic diverticular bleeding.

We performed a nationwide observational study using the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database and identified patients who were admitted for diverticular bleeding from 2010 to 2018. Patients who received TXA on the day of admission comprised the TXA group, and the remaining patients comprised the control group. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes included severe bleeding, blood transfusion within 7days of admission, length of stay, and hospitalization costs. Propensity score matching was performed to compare outcomes between the two groups.

Overall, 78291 patients met our eligibility criteria, and 30526 matched pairs were created by one-to-one propensity score matching. After matching, there was no significant difference in in-hospital mortality between the two groups (odds ratio [OR], 1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.88-1.30); however, TXA administration was associated with significantly lower proportions of severe bleeding events (OR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.89-0.99), blood transfusions (OR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.84-0.92), shorter length of stay (difference, -0.23days; 95% CI, -0.01 to -0.44days), and lower total hospitalization costs (difference, -$233; 95% CI, -$153 to -$314).

Although TXA was not significantly associated with lower in-hospital mortality, it may reduce severe bleeding, blood transfusions, length of stay, and hospitalization costs.

OoCs enable the creation of three-dimensional (3D) tissue microenvironments with physiological and pathological relevance at unparalleled precision and complexity, offering new opportunities to model human diseases and to test the potential therapeutic effect of drugs, while overcoming the limited predictive accuracy of conventional 2D culture systems. Here, we present a liver-on-a-chip model to investigate the effects of two naturally occurring polyphenols, namely quercetin and hydroxytyrosol, on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) using a high-content analysis readout methodology. NAFLD is currently the most common form of chronic liver disease; however, its complex pathogenesis is still far from being elucidated, and no definitive treatment has been established so far. In our experiments, we observed that both polyphenols seem to restrain the progression of the free fatty acid-induced hepatocellular steatosis, showing a cytoprotective effect due to their antioxidant and lipid-lowering properties.
