9%, respectively compared to the blank reactors. The performance and behavior of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are influenced by among others the external load (Rext). In this study, the anode-surface biofilm formation in MFCs operated under different Rext selection/tracking-strategies was assessed. MFCs were characterized by electrochemical (voltage/current generation, polarization tests, EIS), molecular biological (microbial consortium analysis) and bioinformatics (principal component analysis) tools. The results indicated that the MFC with dynamic Rext adjustment (as a function of the actual MFC internal resistance) achieved notably higher performance but relatively lower operational stability, mainly due to the acidification of the biofilm. The opposite (lower performance, increased stability) could be observed with the static (low or high) Rext application (or OCV) strategies, where adaptive microbial processes were assumed. These possible adaptation phenomena were outlined by a theoretical framework and the significant impact of Rext on the anode colonization process and energy recovery with MFCs was concluded. In this study, lignin with different phenolic hydroxyl contents and five model compounds are pyrolyzed to investigate the effect of the interaction of phenolic hydroxyl with a benzene ring on lignin pyrolysis. The results demonstrated that phenolic hydroxyl can reduce the stability of lignin and promote the elimination of the side chain on lignin during pyrolysis. The repolymerization during lignin pyrolysis, which results in increased activation energy and char yield during pyrolysis, can be mainly attributed to phenolic hydroxyl. Meanwhile, the repolymerization because of phenolic hydroxyl is obviously affected by the electron cloud density of the benzene ring. The repolymerization caused by the phenolic hydroxyl can be effectively reduced by increasing the electron cloud density. Furthermore, regulation of the product distribution obtained via lignin pyrolysis by changing the electron cloud density of the benzene ring and the phenolic hydroxyl content in lignin is proposed. In China, Dolichospermum flos-aquae is one of the most prevalent bloom-forming cyanobacteria and thus a major challenge for the concerned catchment area. To solve this problem and turn it into an opportunity for heavy metal remediation, we investigated the potential of D. flos-aquae for production algal biochar, and constructed a microbe-algal biochar composite. The microbe-biochar composite (biochar immobilized Proteus mirabilis PC801) showed superior hexavalent chromium removal capacity. It produced 100% Cr(VI) (150 mg/L) removal efficiency, with 87.7% total Cr immobilized in/on the particles and only 12.3% Cr(III) left in solution. Furthermore, Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy and antioxidase activity results showed that Cr(VI) reduction mainly occurred outside the cells, and the biochar can effectively protect P. mirabilis YC801 from the direct toxicity of chromium, thereby promoting the removal efficiency. Overall, this study provides a promising approach by utilizing this harmful algae for the bio-remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater in practical application. Two anoxic/oxic (A/O) sequencing batch reactor (SBR) processes were utilized to study the effects of static magnetic field (SMF) on biological wastewater treatment process. Except for conventional indices, the reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH)/oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) ratio and electron transport system activity (ETSA), as well as poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and extracellular polymetric substance (EPS) contents in two reactors which were with and without SMF under two cyclic times (12 h and 8 h) were monitored. When the process was enhanced by SMF, the total nitrogen removal efficiency can be improved (>80%), and the NADN/NAD+ ratio, ESTA, the maximum EPS content and the maximum PHB content in the reactor with SMF were higher. Besides, SMF can reduce the microorganism community diversity and make species distribute more even and abundant. SMF can promote the performance of A/O SBR process via improving electron transport and microbial community. This study provides a novel method for improving the anaerobic digestion (AD) of Holstein dairy manure (HDM) by the direct addition of Mineraso (MnS), a natural soil-derived supplement, to the feed of Holstein dairy cattle (HDC). check details MnS is chiefly composed of approximately 69.08% Fe3O4 and was supplemented at rates of 0 (F1), 25 (F2), and 50 (F3) g/head of HDC/d for two months. The HDM was then examined for non-absorbed iron prior to the batch and semi-continuous bench AD experiments. The results revealed that MnS enhanced CH4 generation in F2 and F3 by 25% and 42%, respectively, in the batch experiments compared to that of F1. Additionally, the gas yield improved in F2 and F3 by 45% and 66%, respectively, over the control after 7 d in the bench experiments. Therefore, supplementing animals with MnS represents a sustainable and economic approach to enhancing CH4 yields. A conformal predictive system(CPS) is based on the learning framework of conformal prediction, which outputs cumulative distribution functions(CDFs) for labels in regression problems. The CDFs output by a CPS provide useful information for users, as they not only provide probability for the events related to the test labels, but also can be transformed to prediction intervals with the corresponding quantiles. Moreover, CPSs have the property of validity since the distributions and intervals they output have statistical compatibility with the realizations. This property is very useful for many risk-sensitive applications such as financial time series forecast and weather forecast. However, as based on conformal predictors, CPSs inherit the computational issue. To build a fast CPS, in this paper, we propose a CPS with regularized extreme learning machine as the underlying algorithm. To be specific, we combine the leave-one-out cross-conformal predictive system(Leave-One-Out CCPS), a variant of the original CPS, with regularized extreme learning machine(RELM), which is named as LOO-CCPS-RELM.
