Additional biophysical and biochemical parameters were collected to demonstrate appropriate pregnancy development. In this study Doppler waveform analysis of fetal intracranial vasculature demonstrated an elevated blood flow impedance, showing a significant correlation of carotid Doppler indices with gestational age. Results were comparable to human fetal trends for the middle cerebral artery (MCA) from mid gestation to term. Biochemical data showed expected patterns of uncomplicated pregnancies.The germplasm is a resource and tool for the conservation of genetic diversity in animals, including birds. Securing germplasm is limited in most bird species due to difficulties in semen collection and germ cell isolation, lack of germ cell-specific markers, and in vitro culture systems. Here, we report the production of germline chimeric quails by transplant of cryopreserved testicular cells (TCs) into the developing embryo. The testicular germ cell properties were maintained after freeze-thaw, with no significant reduction in cell viability irrespective of storage length. Cryopreserved TCs were transferred into Hamburger Hamilton (HH) stage 14-17 quail embryos, and were demonstrated to migrate into the embryonic gonads with similar efficiency to freshly isolated TCs. Twenty of 81 recipient embryos yielded hatchlings from cryopreserved TCs and the germline transmission efficiency was similar to that of freshly isolated cells. In conclusion, cryopreserved adult quail TCs are capable of (de)differentiation into functional gametes in recipient quail gonads and can generate donor TCs-derived progenies. This system is feasible for the isolation of sufficient germplasm resources from various bird species for conservation purposes.In captive rhinoceros stillbirth and perinatal death are recorded at a rate of 6-17% in the various species. At the same time there is a substantial lack of knowledge on rhinoceros parturition. Yet, predicting parameters for birth and progress of parturition are fundamental for the recognition of dystocia and perinatal problems. Therefore, we here intended to pay close attention to the Achilles heel of the 1.5-2.5 year reproduction cycle in rhinoceros, the parturition. For the prediction of parturition we recorded timelines for pre-birth udder development, genital swelling, milk production, behavioral unrest, and decrease of serum progesterone concentration and the gestational length in 19 white rhinoceros. First, second and third labour stage, foetal presentation and events in perinatal period were recorded to describe normal parturition and establish a guideline for better birth management in rhinoceros. Udder development and genital swelling were observed 3 and 2 weeks prior birth, respectively. Milk produths (n = 2/19) in anterior presentation perinatal complications occurred. Stillbirth occurred once (5.3% n = 1/19) when the foetus was born in posterior presentation. The recorded gestational length was 506 ± 2d. Delivering live offspring is of key importance to establish a new generation and secure long-term survival of a species. Various pre-birth changes, significant decrease of serum progesterone 48 h prior birth, different labour stages, foetal presentation and perinatal events described here add substantial knowledge on the understanding of normal rhinoceros parturition and may help diagnose dystocia and perinatal complications.The objectives of the present study were to 1) compare the reproductive efficiency of embryo transfer (ET) recipients after synchronization of estrus or a 5-day synchronization of ovulation protocol for fixed time ET (FTET), and 2) determine the effect of reutilization of intravaginal P4 devices (CIDRs), up to four times, in a 5-day FTET protocol. In Experiment 1, 817 dairy heifers were assigned to one of three groups PGF + estrus detection, 5-d FTET protocol with new (1.38 g P4) or 2nd use CIDR (previously used once for 5 d). Fresh in vitro produced embryos were transferred 7 ± 1 day after estrus (PGF + estrus) or GnRH (5-day FTET). Utilization rate (transferred/treated) was greater (P 0.05) in utilization rate, P/ET, or P/treated. Thus, use of a 5-day FTET synchronization protocol improves reproductive efficiency by increasing recipient utilization, and reutilization of CIDRs up to four times in recipient dairy heifers does not compromise reproductive performance.Spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasias (SEMDs), which comprise a heterogeneous group of autosomal-dominant, autosomal-recessive and X-linked recessive disorders, are characterized by anomalies of the spine, the epiphyses and metaphyses of the long bones, resulting in short stature and osteoarthritic changes of the joints. UFSP2 gene encodes a highly conserved cysteine protease which cleaves two C-terminal residues from ubiquitin-fold modifier 1, an ubiquitin-like post-translational modifier protein. In 2018, Di Rocco, M reported for the first time that a novel heterozygous variant exon 11 c.1277A > C of the UFSP2 gene was the cause to spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia mainly manifested as short stature, anterior vertebral dysplasia, hip dysplasia, flat vertebra, spinal metaphyseal dysplasia, irregular acetabular apex, distal femoral metaphyseal dysplasia, proximal tibial metaphyseal dysplasia, osteoarthritis and so on. In this report, we describe a boy with spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia due to a novel mutation exon 11 c.1283A > G (leading to p. H428R) of the UFSP2 gene. This is the second report to describe children with SEMDs associated with an UFSP2 variant. However, it is the first to describe a UFSP2 gene mutation exon 11 c.1283A > G (leading to p. Disgust is a common emotion experienced by healthcare professionals which in extreme cases can contribute to neglect and abuse of patients. However, little research has explored how healthcare professionals experience disgust and what coping strategies they use to manage it.
To identify, evaluate and synthesise results from empirical papers that have explored how healthcare professionals experience, understand and manage disgust in clinical work.
A narrative literature review.
Using the EBSCOHost interface, a range of databases were systematically searched alongside manual searches and citation chaining which yielded the 11 papers included in this review.
Qualitative synthesis.
Three major themes were identified The professionals' struggle to talk about disgust; the importance of boundaries boundary breaching and boundary building; and the role of empathy in caring.
This review found that disgust is a common experience for healthcare professionals, yet it is not talked about or openly expressed.
