study confirmed the involvement of low differentiated cells and endothelial cells in patients with SA.
Due to its unique arrangement, the deep and superficial fibers of the multifidus may have differential roles for maintaining spine stabilization and lumbar posture; the superficial multifidus is responsible for lumbar extension and the deep multifidus for intersegmental stability. In patients with chronic lumbar spine pathology, muscle activation patterns have been shown to be attenuated or delayed in the deep, but not superficial, multifidus. This has been interpreted as pain differentially influencing the deep region. However, it is unclear if degenerative changes affecting the composition and function of the multifidus differs between the superficial and deep regions, an alternative explanation for these electrophysiological changes. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate macrostructural and microstructural differences between the superficial and deep regions of the multifidus muscle in patients with lumbar spine pathology.
In 16 patients undergoing lumbar spinal surgery for degenerative fidus is more degenerated in patients with lumbar spine pathology, as gross degenerative changes in muscle microstructure and macrostructure were the same in the superficial and deep regions of the multifidus. Selleckchem 8-Bromo-cAMP In these patients, the multifidus is not protected in order to maintain mobility and structural stability of the spine.
The results of our study did not support that the deep region of the multifidus is more degenerated in patients with lumbar spine pathology, as gross degenerative changes in muscle microstructure and macrostructure were the same in the superficial and deep regions of the multifidus. In these patients, the multifidus is not protected in order to maintain mobility and structural stability of the spine. An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via the original article.
Angiosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor, originating from vascular endothelial cells, accounting for approximatively 1-2% of soft tissue sarcomas. It is characterized by a rapid proliferation and high metastatic potential. Some cases of angiosarcoma are described in association with vascular prosthesis, orthopedic devices and foreign bodies. Hereby, we report a case of a patient treated with the endovascular placement of a PTFE aorto bis-iliac prosthesis for aortic aneurysm, who developed a graft-related angiosarcoma with bone and peritoneal localizations. The peritoneal "sarcomatosis" led to an acute presentation with hemoperitoneum and anemia. We perform a thorough review of the literature summarizing the description of similar cases, their epidemiology and the possibilities for treatment.
An 84-year-old male with a history of abdominal aortic aneurysm endovascular repair presented to our emergency department complaining with low back pain radiating to the left limb. He underwent a type II endoleak embolnosis, a prompt diagnosis might give access to an adequate treatment planning, with the aim for disease control and increased survival.
Angiosarcoma associated with foreign bodies, especially vascular prosthesis, is a very rare entity. In patients who have a history of prosthetic vascular graft placement that present with lumbar pain, osteolytic changes at radiologic imaging or the development of ascites, angiosarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Despite the poor prognosis, a prompt diagnosis might give access to an adequate treatment planning, with the aim for disease control and increased survival.
Direct observation of the household spread of influenza and respiratory infections is limited; much of our understanding comes from mathematical models. The study aims to determine household incidence of influenza-like illness (ILI), lower (LRTI) and upper (URTI) respiratory infections within a primary care routine data and identify factors associated with the diseases' incidence.
We conducted two five-year retrospective analyses of influenza-like illness (ILI), lower (LRTI) and upper (URTI) respiratory infections using the England Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Research and Surveillance Centre (RSC) primary care sentinel network database; a cross-sectional study reporting incident rate ratio (IRR) from a negative binomial model and a retrospective cohort study, using a shared gamma frailty survival model, reporting hazard ratios (HR). We reported the following household characteristics children < 5 years old, each extra household member, gender, ethnicity (reference white), chronic disedelling of disease transmission and public health policy.
Disease surveillance is central to the public health understanding of pertussis epidemiology. In Canada, public reporting practices have significantly changed over time, creating challenges in accurately characterizing pertussis epidemiology. Debate has emerged over whether pertussis resurged after the introduction of adsorbed pertussis vaccines (1981-1985), and if the incidence fell to its pre-1985 after the introduction of acellular pertussis vaccines (1997-1998). Here, we aim to assemble a unified picture of pertussis disease incidence in Canada.
Using publicly available pertussis surveillance reports, we collected, analyzed and presented Canadian pertussis data for the period (1924-2015), encompassing the pre-vaccine era, introduction of vaccine, changes to vaccine technology, and the introduction of booster doses. Information on age began to be reported since 1952, but age reporting practices (full, partial or no ages) have evolved over time, and varied across provinces/territories. For those cases rs from 1969 to 1988.
The study is to investigate the influence of high myopia on the consistency between optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual field in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
We enrolled 37 patients with POAG with high myopia (POAG-HM group), 27 patients with POAG without high myopia (POAG group), and 29 controls with high myopia (HM group). All subjects underwent Humphrey perimetry (30-2 and 10-2 algorithms). The peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thicknesses were measured using Cirrus HD-OCT. Spearman's rank correlation analysis was used to determine correlations between OCT and perimetric parameters. Agreement was analyzed by cross-classification and weighted κ statistics.
In POAG group, the cross-classification analysis showed strong agreement between the inferior temporal GCIPL thickness and the mean sensitivity (MS) of 10-2 algorithms (κ = 0.5447, P = 0.0048), and good agreement between the superior and inferior RNFL thicknesses and 30-2 MS (κ = 0.
