Menurut Prof. Severus Snape, Ilmu Hitam itu: memiliki banyak jenis, bervariasi, selalu berubah-rubah, abadi, tak dapat dikontrol, berpindah-pindah, dan tidak dapat dimusnahkan.
1. Banyak Jenisnya
Maksudnya adalah Ilmu Hitam ini disebarluaskan ke dalam beberapa aspek dunia sihir, seperti: mantra Ilmu Hitam, ramuan berlabel Ilmu Hitam, benda Ilmu Hitam, dan satwa gaib Ilmu Hitam.
2. Bervariasi
Ilmu Hitam memiliki variasi yang lebih luas lagi dari jenis Ilmu Hitam.
Tujuan dari penggunaan Ilmu Hitam itu juga bervariasi. Selain untuk tujuan kriminal, Ilmu Hitam juga digunakan oleh para Auror (dengan izin dari kementrian sihir) berkaitan dengan tugas pengamanan yang dilakukan oleh para Auror itu sendiri.
3. Abadi
Ilmu Hitam terus dipelajari dan pelaku dari Ilmu Hitam ini sendiri terus bertambah. Ilmu Hitam bahkan dipelajari oleh salah satu sekolah peserta Triwizard, Durmstrang. Jadi, Ilmu Hitam akan abadi atau justru akan terus berkembang.

STUDI KASUS: BASILISK
Basilisk merupakan Satwa Gaib berlabel Ilmu Hitam dan memiliki KKM XXXXX.
Jangan pernah melihat apalagi menatap mata Basilisk dengan mata telanjang.
Hewan ini ditemukan oleh Herpo si Pelanggar.
Digunakan Voldemort atau TMR (Tom Marvolo Riddle) sebagai hewan penjaga Kamar Rahasia. Hewan ini berhasil dibunuh oleh Harry Potter dengan pedang milik Godric Gryffindor, dan taringnya digunakan untuk merusak buku harian TMR.
