Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative bacterium involved in many gastric pathologies such as ulcers and cancers. Although the treatment for this infection has existed for several years, the development of a vaccine is nevertheless necessary to reduce the severe forms of the disease. For more than three decades, many advances have been made particularly in the understanding of virulence factors as well as the pathogenesis of gastric diseases caused by H.pylori. Among these key virulence factors, specific antigens have been identified Urease, Vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA), Cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA), Blood group antigen-binding adhesin (BabA), H.pylori adhesin A (HpaA), and others.

This review will focus on H.pylori adhesins, in particular, on HpaA and on the current knowledge of H.pylori vaccines.

To estimate the incidence of falls in individuals with type 2 diabetes compared to healthy controls and to describe the characteristics of fallers with type 2 diabetes in relation to motor dysfunction, postural instability and diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN).

This is a cross-sectional study of individuals with type 2 diabetes with DPN (n=54), without DPN (n=38) and healthy controls (n=39). Falls were recorded within the preceding year. DPN was defined by clinical scores and nerve conduction studies. Motor function was assessed by a 6-min walk test (6MWT), five-time sit-to-stand test (FTSST) and isokinetic dynamometry at the non-dominant ankle and knee. An instability index (ST) was measured using static posturography. Univariate and bivariate descriptive statistics were used for group comparisons.

Compared with healthy controls, individuals with diabetes had a higher incidence of falls 36%, (n=33) versus 15%, (n=6), p=0.02. There were no differences in falls when comparing individuals with and without DPNentification of individuals at risk for falls.
Several medications may worsen heart failure (HF), and they are considered as potentially inappropriate medications for patients with heart failure (PIMHF). No studies reported the prevalence of PIMHF use and its associated factors in Thai HF patients.

From the EMD, 972 and 2888 eligible HF patients from a secondary and a tertiary care hospital, respectively, were included in this study. The prevalence of PIMHF use was 45.16% and 33.07% at a secondary and a tertiary care hospital, respectively. Factors associated with PIMHF use were HFpEF (aOR=1.68, 95% CI=1.39-2.03), diabetes mellitus (DM) (aOR=1.66, 95% CI=1.35-2.05), renal failure (RF) (aOR=1.49, 95% CI=1.21-1.84), chronic pulmonary diseases (CPD) (aOR=2.41, 95% CI=1.74-3.34), connective tissue diseases (CTD) (aOR=5.21, 95% CI=2.17-12.49), and cancer (aOR=2.57, 95% CI=1.36-4.86).

IDV is the aetiologic agent of acute, mild respiratory disease in ungulate species with agricultural importance (cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, camels, etc.). Despite the initial isolate being of porcine origin, serological data suggest cattle to be the primary host of IDV. The study aims were twofold elucidating species-specific replication kinetics of IDV in bovine and porcine hosts and defining the interspecies potential with two different IDV strains. Three calves and three pigs were intranasally inoculated with the prototypic strain D/swine/Oklahoma/1334/2017 or a genetically distinct cattle isolate, D/bovine/Texas/72/2017. Two days following infection, three naïve pigs and three naïve calves were co-housed with inoculated calves and pigs, respectively. The species of IDV origin had no effect on virus replication kinetics in the upper respiratory tract of inoculated calves and pigs; similar shedding profiles were observed for each species and virus. However, interspecies transmission was found to be associated with virus origin species; D/bovine/Texas/72/2017 and D/swine/Oklahoma/1334/2017 were directly transmitted only to contact calves or pigs, respectively. Even so, transmission efficiency was higher for calves compared to pigs. Together, these data show that cattle and pigs are permissive for IDV replication, but IDV transmission may be species dependent. Host-specific mutations likely influenced transmission efficiencies between agriculturally important mammalian species.
