However, their role in sepsis-induced lung injury is unknown. In this study, high-throughput gene sequencing was used to analyze the expression profiles of circRNAs in lung specimens of mice grouped by acute lung injury induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and sham. To identify differentially expressed circRNAs, the left lungs of sham (n = 3) and CLP (n = 3) mice were used for high-throughput sequencing. A total of 919 circRNAs were identified. Of these, 38 circRNAs showed significantly different expression levels between the groups (P less then 0.05, fold change ≥2). The levels of 20 circRNAs were up-regulated and those of 18 others were down-regulated. In bioinformatics analysis of the source genes of these circRNAs, the genes were closely associated with the inflammatory response (e.g., the TGF-β, MAPK, Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytic, and VEGF pathways). Eight circRNAs with large intergroup differences, small intragroup differences, and high expression were selected for further validation by qRT-PCR. Two of the eight were significantly different. These two circRNAs were annotated with circRNA/miRNA interaction information downloaded from the TargetScan and miRanda databases and visualized. Our results provide novel insights into the roles of circRNAs in sepsis-induced acute lung injury.
Disability accumulation in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) results from inflammatory and neurodegenerative mechanisms. In animal models of MS, lithium acts to reduce inflammatory demyelination, and in models of neurodegenerative diseases, lithium also slows neuronal death. Prospective studies of lithium in MS patients have not been previously undertaken.

To determine the tolerance and feasibility of using low-dose (150-300 mg/daily) lithium as a pharmaceutical intervention in a cohort of subjects with progressive MS, and to gauge preliminary effects of lithium on change in brain volume over time.

Patients with primary or secondary progressive MS were recruited into a 2-year, single-blind crossover trial in which subjects were randomly assigned to take lithium in year 1 or 2. The primary outcomes of interest were tolerance of lithium and percentage brain volume change (PBVC) on vs. off lithium. Secondary outcomes included relapse rates, disability changes, and self-report scales assessing fatigue, mostudy design and sample size. Despite concern for lithium-associated neurological side effects, subjects taking lithium did not report worsened fatigue or physical well-being. On measures of mood and mental health QOL, subjects scored more favorably while taking lithium.

Athletic pubalgia (AP), a frequent problem among professional roller hockey players (PRHPs), consists of lower abdominal and groin pain, without the presence of true hernia.

We assessed cetylated fatty acids (CFAs) in association with conservative therapy for treatment of AP in PRHPs.

Ultrasound examination was performed before and after treatment. Strength tests were performed and AP-related pain was measured during the treatment period.

Nine of 10 enrolled PRHPs completed a 12-week treatment with CFAs in association with conservative therapy, consisting of manual therapy, diathermy or ultrasonography. Initial ultrasound examination showed AP signs in 7 (70%) of 10 PRHPs. After 12 weeks of therapy, these signs could only be detected by ultrasound in 2 (22.2%) of 9 PRHPs. An increase in muscle strength (already after first week of treatment) and a reduction of AP-related pain were also observed during the treatment.

The chosen blade material was analyzed using ANSYS for stress and deformation degree under the impact of hydraulic jets to ascertain its suitability while in operation. The shaft was analyzed under static and dynamic conditions using ANSYS in order to ensure a non-plastic deformation of the shaft at both conditions. The outcome of this analysis was employed in the harmonic response analysis of the runner shaft. Convergent tests were done for both the blade and runner shaft analysis. An experiment was designed for the evaluation of the crossflow turbine performance using optimal (custom) design tool of response surface methodology and 69 simulations/runs were obtained. The factors considered in the experimental design are nozzle distance from the shaft, nozzle height and attack angle. The crossflow turbine was constructed using computed design values for all the machine's parts. The developed mathematical models for each response has higher correlation value, suggesting that the models are suitable for predicting the responses at the considered factor levels. This article reviews the basic theories of knowledge, the context for sorting through and summarizing that knowledge and a number of options available, and used, to assemble the knowledge base for research and policy work. The authors undertook a summative process in the domain of biotechnology, agriculture and development and offer insights into the comparative methods and their impacts on the outcome. A population sample of 421 articles was gathered. Four methods-expert Delphi, citation analysis, social network analysis and peer evaluation-were used to select the 51 pieces for inclusion and analysis in the core literature. That analysis shows that each process delivered a different set of evidence. The potential for bias in knowledge assessment can challenge policy makers in their process of reviewing evidence that rationalizes policy.
