1. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a vital role in the proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis of myoblasts. However, the effect of miR-7 on the apoptosis of chicken primary myoblasts (CPMs) and its mechanism is still unclear.2. In this study, the expression of apoptosis marker genes (RAF1, Caspase3, Caspase9, Cytc, Fas) in CPMs was significantly increased after transfection of miR-7 mimic. The expression of the apoptosis marker genes in CPMs was significantly reduced after transfection with miR-7 inhibitor. Flow cytometry showed that the late apoptosis rate of the mimic group was significantly higher than the negative control (NC). The viable cells of the mimic group were significantly lower than the NC. In contrast, inhibition of miR-7 had the opposite effect.3. The dual-luciferase assay showed that the KLF4 was a target gene of miR-7. The rescue experiment showed that the KLF4 gene could attenuate the effect of miR-7 on the expression of apoptosis marker genes in CPMs.4. Determination of the function the KLF4 gene showed that the expression of the apoptosis marker genes in CPMs decreased significantly compared with the NC after its overexpression. Inhibition of KLF4 gene had the opposite effect. Flow cytometry showed that overexpression of the KLF4 gene inhibited early apoptosis of myoblasts (P ≤ 0.01), while interference with the KLF4 gene could promote early apoptosis of myoblasts (P ≤ 0.001).5. The results demonstrated, for the first time, that miR-7 promotes apoptosis in chicken primary myoblasts by regulating the expression of the KLF4 gene. This study examined associations between four indicators of social determinants of health (SDOH; parent education, poverty, material hardships, and child health problems), chronic school absence, and teachers' ratings of parents' engagement in their children's education. TOFA inhibitor concentration Surveys were collected from 304 parents and 26 teachers from eight Baltimore City Public Schools. Results revealed that teachers' ratings of parent engagement were consistently lower among families experiencing adverse SDOH and/or whose children were chronically absent; however, there was no significant relationship between teachers' ratings of parent engagement and child health problems. Additionally, chronic absence partially mediated the relationship between three SDOH indicators (total material hardships, parent education level, and child health problems) and teacher-rated parent engagement. Poverty was excluded from mediation analysis due to evidence of multicollinearity suppressive effects. Addressing the SDOH assessed in this study may be an effective strategy to reduce chronic absence, promote parent engagement, and foster equity in education. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed to summarize the effects of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics on insulin resistance (IR), lipid profiles, anthropometric indices, and C-reactive protein (CRP) level for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We searched 8 databases from their inception until 1st October, 2020. The effect sizes were expressed as standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Subgroup analyses were undertaken for further identification of effects of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics, based on the following aspects (1) type of intervention (probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics); (2) study duration (≥ 12 weeks or less then 12 weeks); (3) number of probiotic strains (multi strains or single strain); (4) probiotic dose (≥ 2 × 108 colony-forming units [CFU] or less then 2 × 108 CFU). A total of 17 eligible RCTs with 1049 participants were included. Results showed that probiotic, prebiotic, and synbiotic intake decreased fastis demonstrates that probiotic, prebiotic, or synbiotic administration is an effective and safe intervention for modifying IR and lipid profiles.Although researchers have debated whether a core deficit of nonsymbolic representation of magnitude underlies developmental dyscalculia (DD), research has mostly focused on numerosity processing. We probed the possibility of a general magnitude deficit in individuals with DD and asked whether sensitivity to size varied in contexts of depth ordering and size constancy. We measured full psychometric functions in size-discrimination tasks in 12 participants with DD and 13 control participants. Results showed that although people with DD exhibited veridical perceived magnitude, their sensitivity to size was clearly impaired. In contrast, when objects were embedded in depth cues allowing size-constancy computations, participants with DD demonstrated typical sensitivity to size. These results demonstrate a deficit in the perceptual resolutions of magnitude in DD. At the same time, the finding of an intact size constancy suggests that when magnitude perception is facilitated by implicit mandatory computations of size constancy, this deficit is no longer evident.Suicide is a public health issue that impacts a nation's resident and non-resident populations alike. Singapore has one of the largest non-resident (work permit holder) populations in the world, yet very little attention has been given to examining suicide in this population. The current study examined the case materials of all 303 non-resident completed suicides in Singapore in the period January 2011 to December 2014. Their basic profiles were compared with that of the 1,507 resident cases in the same period. A sample of 30 death notes written by non-residents were randomly selected and thematically analyzed to supplement the descriptive findings and discussion. Results showed that suicides were highest among males, those aged 21-35 years old, and South Asians. Most non-resident suicide cases did not have known physical or mental health issues, prior suicide attempts, or suicide notes. Suicide decedents from South Asia and Europe most frequently used hanging, while jumping was most common among decedents from other regions. Relationship and health problems emerged as the top two suspected triggers for suicide based on our analysis of the suicide notes. The unique situation of working abroad may increase non-residents' vulnerability in general, while adverse life events such as relationship and health issues may be too overwhelming to bear, especially when support services are not readily available and accessible. The results have implications for suicide prevention among this neglected group of people who choose to work in foreign lands.
