Interplay involving cognition and fat reduction in men and women after a Med Diet program: Three-year follow-up in the PREDIMED-Plus trial.

Predictive equations are widely used to estimate resting energy expenditure (REE). In the study, we conducted a systematic review of REE predictive equations in the elderly population and compared them in an experimental population. Studies involving subjects older than 65 years of age that evaluated the performance of a predictive equation vs. a gold standard were included. The retrieved equations were then tested on a sample of 88 elderly subjects enrolled in an Italian nursing home to evaluate the agreement among the estimated REEs. The agreement was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). A web application, equationer, was developed to calculate all the estimated REEs according to the available variables. The review identified 68 studies (210 different equations). The agreement among the equations in our sample was higher for equations with fewer parameters, especially those that included body weight, ICC = 0.75 (95% CI = 0.69-0.81). There is great heterogeneity among REE estimates. Such differences should be considered and evaluated when estimates are applied to particularly fragile populations since the results have the potential to impact the patient's overall clinical outcome.Mandatory nutrition labelling, introduced in Malaysia in 2003, received a "medium implementation" rating from public health experts when previously benchmarked against international best practices by our group. The rating prompted this qualitative case study to explore barriers and facilitators during the policy process. Methods incorporated semi-structured interviews supplemented with cited documents and historical mapping of local and international directions up to 2017. Case participants held senior positions in the Federal government (n = 6), food industry (n = 3) and civil society representations (n = 3). Historical mapping revealed that international directions stimulated policy processes in Malaysia but policy inertia caused implementation gaps. Barriers hindering policy processes included lack of resources, governance complexity, lack of monitoring, technical challenges, policy characteristics linked to costing, lack of sustained efforts in policy advocacy, implementer characteristics and/or industry resistance, including corporate political activities (e.g., lobbying, policy substitution). For this matter, antioxidants like sulfur oxide are added to avoid excessive oxidation and consequent degradation of the wine. In the same sense, bottles must be closed with appropriate stoppers and stored in adequate, stable conditions, as the wine may develop unappealing color, aromas and flavors otherwise. In this review, features of bottle aging, relevance of stoppers, involved chemical reactions and storage conditions affecting wine quality will be addressed.Low physical activity of patients is a global problem and associated with loss of strength and independent mobility. This study analyzes the effect of general physical activity promoting interventions on functional and hospital outcomes in patients hospitalized over 48 h. Five electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials. For outcomes reported in two studies or more, a meta-analysis was performed to test between-group differences (intervention versus control) using a random-effects model. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to rate the certainty of evidence for each outcome. Out of 23,302 identified studies, we included four studies (in total n = 368 participants). We found with moderate certainty of evidence 0 reported falls in the intervention (n = 126) versus five reported falls in the control (n = 122), a non-statistically significant difference between intervention and control groups (p = 0.06). In addition, we found with (very) low certainty of evidence no statistically significant differences between groups on activities of daily living (ADL-activity) and time spent standing and walking. Overall, we found no conclusive evidence on the effect of general physical activity promoting interventions on functional outcomes. More research is needed to understand and improve the effect of general physical activity promoting interventions for patients during the hospital stay.Agricultural wastes used as denitrification carbon sources have some drawbacks such as excessive organic carbon release and unclear release characteristics of nitrogen, phosphorus, and chromatic substances, which can cause adverse effects on the effluent quality during the denitrification process. The composition and surface characteristics, carbon release mechanisms, and secondary pollutant release properties of six kinds of agricultural wastes, i.e., rice straw (RS), wheat straw (WS), corn stalk (CS), corncob (CC), soybean stalk (SS), and soybean hull (SH) were studied and analyzed in this research. The denitrification performance of these agricultural wastes was also investigated extensively by batch experiments. The results showed that the carbon release basically followed the second-order reaction kinetic equation and Ritger-Peppas equation in the 120 h reaction, and it was mainly controlled by the diffusion process. The kinetic equation fitting results and bioavailability test suggested that the potential risk of excessive effluent COD of CC was the lowest due to the appropriate amount and degradability of its released carbon.
