Here are my biggest issues with pokemon go:
1) Gym battles. Having a battling system is essential in a pokemon game, but the way it was implemented in pokemon go is a complete failure. Winning a gym battle requires little to no skill. The inherent lag makes "dodging" nearly impossible as well as the traditional type matchups having almost no effect on how the battles play out. Super-effective moves (and i use that term lightly) do only 1.2x damage. Also the traditional immunities (flying being immune to ground, normal being immune to ghost) are nonexistent.
2) Nearby list. Besides the fact that it is clearly broken right now, I have other problems with it. This game has already developed a reputation for being ambiguous with how to play and the nearby chart is no different. It should tell you how far away 3 steps is, and let you know you're going in the correct direction. It shouldn't hold your hand, but at least explain how to use it. Also it should include a timer for when the pokemon is going to despawn so the player knows when to hurry or not.
3) Vaporeon. This is the biggest one. Inexplicably, Vaporeon is one of the best pokemon in the game. It is remarkably easy to get due to the sea of Eevee (which should be a rare pokemon, not common). It has higher hp than Flareon or Jolteon, in addition to having a faster attack than almost any other Pokemon. Also, it naturally has a much higher cp than any other pokemon a trainer will find at their level. I'm seeing level 15 players with Vaporeon boasting cp of over 1000. Vaporeon also creates problems relating to my first point about type matchups. One would think with Vaporeon being a water type it would lose to a grass type of comparable cp. If I had a lucky egg for each time my Vileplume has gotten blown back by a Vaporeon I would be level 30 by now. It makes no sense and needs to be fixed. It lessens the value of rarer water type pokemon like Blastoise, Starmie or Golduck because Vaporeon requires almost no skill to acquire and win with. Why bother grinding for a rare water type when everybody in town has a Vaporeon that could beat it easily? It ruins the meta and closes the skill gap.
Other than that the game is awesome. Of course it can use a few functionality touch-ups here and there but these are the problems that are really ruining it for me.
