When you think about electricity, thoughts of lightning bolts and electric shocks may come to mind.
atoms -Everything is made of atoms: water, rocks, air, electricity, and even people.
The word atom comes from the Greek word "atomos," meaning indivisible. It is a particle too small to be subdivided further.
No one has ever seen an atom, but scientists have a good idea of what an atom looks like.
The nucleus and the electron are attracted to each other. This attraction is called electrostatic force.
The electron has a negative charge.
The nucleus is made of particles called protons and neutrons. Protons have a positive charge. Neutrons have no charge.
The positive charge of the proton gives the nucleus a positive charge.
Normally, an atom has the same number of electrons and protons.
When the number of protons equals the number of electrons, the atom is electrically neutral.
When a positive and a negative body are brought together, their unlike charges cause them to be drawn together.
If two like bodies are brought together, their like charges cause them to repel each other.
Now, let's look closer at the atom. Remember, the electron has a negative charge and the nucleus has a positive charge.
Electrostatic force draws the electron and nucleus together.
