The aim of the work was to describe the profile of steroid hormones in the peripartum period of the bitch. Twenty-five healthy pregnant bitches presented for pregnancy monitoring and parturition assistance were included in the study. A blood sample was collected for routine progesterone assay, and serum was stored at -20°C. The day of parturition and the number of delivered puppies were registered. Concentrations of corticosteroids, androgens, progestogens, estrogens, for a total number of 17 different hormones, were measured using ultra-performance supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Data were analyzed using a repeated measure, mixed-model approach, taking into account day (from day -4 to day +2 from parturition), age, parity (primiparous vs pluriparous), number of delivered puppies ( 8), and interactions between factors. Day related to parturition significantly affected the concentration of progesterone (P less then 0.001), testosterone (P less then 0.001), 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (P = 0.0002), and cortisone (P = 0.006). Estrogen concentration did not show any significant variation over time. Testosterone and androstenedione showed an abrupt decline on the day of parturition. The concentration of all glucocorticoids increased the day before parturition. Age or parity was not significantly associated with any of the steroids. Litter size significantly affected concentrations of aldosterone (P = 0.02) and etiocholanolone (P = 0.01). Aldosterone concentrations were higher in litters with 4 to 8 pups than in litters with more than 8 pups (P = 0.02). None of the steroids measured in our study, with the already known exception of progesterone, shows potential to be clinically useful in predicting the onset of parturition in the bitch.Pheochromocytoma diagnosis in dogs is challenging because biochemical tests are not always available. In humans, urinary vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) is part of a pheochromocytoma biochemical diagnostic profile, whereas its diagnostic accuracy is currently unknown in dogs with pheochromocytoma. Prospectively, VMA was determined by HPLC and expressed as the ratio with respect to urinary creatinine (VMAC). The diagnostic accuracy of the VMAC ratio was evaluated by analyzing the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve in 10 healthy dogs, 8 dogs with pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism, 8 dogs with adrenal-dependent hypercortisolism, and 7 dogs with pheochromocytoma. GDC-6036 solubility dmso The pheochromocytoma diagnosis was confirmed by histology and immunohistochemistry in all tumors. The VMAC ratio was significantly higher in dogs with pheochromocytoma (158 [53.4 to 230.8] × 10-3) than in dogs with adrenal-dependent hypercortisolism (48.1 [24.3 to 144.9] × 10-3; P 58.2 × 10-3 for pheochromocytoma diagnosis, a sensitivity of 85.7% and a specificity of 88.4% were obtained. Nevertheless, when using a cut-off ratio of 4 times the median VMAC ratio determined in healthy dogs, there was no overlap (100% specificity). The area under the ROC curve indicated that the VMAC ratio test could be used to discriminate between dogs with and without pheochromocytoma, what leads to the conclusion that it is useful for pheochromocytoma diagnosis in dogs.
This study aimed to investigate individual and team sports participation across sex, age, and levels of body mass index (BMI). We also wanted to explore how symptoms of disordered eating (DE) were associated with participation in individual and team sports, and to what extent BMI moderated this association.

Data stemmed from a large population-based survey of 10,172 Norwegian adolescents aged 16 to 19years. Self-reported participation in organized team- and individual sports were the dependent variables. Self-reported symptoms of DE using the five-item Eating Disturbance Screening (EDS-5) questionnaire comprised the independent variable. Covariates included sex, age, socioeconomic status, and BMI. We used regression analyses for associations between DE symptoms and sports participation, including the interaction between DE and BMI.

Boys had higher team sports participation compared with girls. Individual and team sports participation varied significantly across BMI levels for each sex. Symptoms of DE wed sports participation in the general adolescent population.Sociocultural pressures in male athletics emphasize masculinity in the form of muscularity, leanness, and physical strength. Although research has examined extensively weight, weigh-ins, and weight pressures among female athletes, these issues have been minimally considered with male athletes. Thus, our purpose was to examine the weight environment and practices of NCAA (i.e., Divisions I, II, III) collegiate male athletes from 19 different sports (e.g., basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, wrestling). Specifically, we surveyed 698 male athletes regarding frequency and circumstances of team weigh-ins, weight management behaviors, weight intentions, caloric intake, and guidance received for healthfully managing weight and eating. Overall, relatively few male athletes reported undergoing mandatory team weigh-ins (21.8%). However, within this subgroup required to engage in them, most weigh-ins occurred at least once per week or more (59.2%), and most athletes' weights were made public (75.7%). Just over 30% of the weighed athletes used at least one strategy to prepare for weigh-ins, primarily relying on exercise or caloric restriction. The majority (85.2%) wanted to change their weight, primarily by gaining muscle mass. Most athletes received guidance from qualified sources (e.g., athletic trainer) regarding healthy weight management (63.5%) and nutrition (70.2%). Overall, few male athletes are subjected to mandatory weigh-ins, and such participation is not related to pathological weight control behaviors. Further, male athletes appear to have access to qualified sources for information on healthful management of weight and eating, which may help them as they pursue their goals of increased muscularity and strength.
The understanding of fatigue of the human motor system is important in the fields of ergonomics, sport, rehabilitation and neurology. In order to understand the interactions between fatigue and reaction time, we evaluated the effects of two different fatiguing tasks on reaction time.

83 healthy subjects were included in a case-control study with three arms where single and double choice reaction time tasks were performed before and after 2min fatiguing task (an isometric task, a finger tapping task and at rest).

After an isometric task, the right-fatigued hand was slower in the choice component of a double choice reaction time task (calculated as the individual difference between single and double choice reaction times); also, the subjects that felt more fatigued had slower choice reaction time respect to the baseline assessment. Moreover, in relationship to the performance decay after two minutes, finger tapping task produces more intense fatigability perception.

We confirmed that two minutes of isometric or repetitive tasks are enough to produce fatigue.
