In many parts of the world, emerging adults, aged 18 to 25 years old, require education beyond high school to transition to a stable, secure adulthood. Child abuse, trauma, victimization, and adversity have been shown to negatively affect academic functioning and educational attainment during childhood and adolescence. Despite this, many emerging adults who have experienced these adverse events also show remarkable resilience. Understanding both maladaptation and resilience among emerging adults will inform efforts to increase academic success and post-secondary educational attainment. In the current review, we synthesize literature on associations between child sexual abuse and academic functioning and educational outcomes in emerging adults and college students, including possible social, emotional, and cognitive mediators. We find initial evidence that academic functioning and educational outcomes are separable, with more research needed on reasons for leaving college other than low grades, more research on community colleges, trade schools, on-the-job training, military training, and other sites of post-secondary learning, and as well as the antecedents and consequences of academic experiences in emerging adulthood. Overall, we have a limited understanding of the social and emotional functioning important to educational success in college and other post-secondary educational settings.During the recovery period, athletes present high sedentary behaviour (SB). In non-athletes, there is a direct relationship between SB and obesity. However, little is known about this relationship in athletes. We hypothesized that different types of SB entail different associations with body composition outcomes. We examined the associations between different types of SB and body composition outcomes in 135 athletes (70 males) aged 21.3 ± 3.9 years old. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was performed to assess fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM) and trunk fat mass (TFM). A validated SB questionnaire (PACE) was used to estimate total SB and specific sedentary pursuits on an average day. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed, adjusting for age, sex, weekly training time, years of sport practice, and sport type. A positive association was found for total SB and total screen time with %TFM (β = 0.220, p = 0.038 and β = 0.319, p = 0.040, respectively), while an inverse association was found for %FFM (β = -0.214, p = 0.042 and β = -0.310, p = 0.026). A higher total screen time was related with a higher %FM (β = 0.283, p = 0.035). With a much stronger effect size, cell phone screen time was positively related with %FM (β = 1.447, p = 0.001). There is still debate whether high levels of physical activity can fully counteract the harms of SB. These findings suggest that SB, particularly cell phone screen time, can compromise athletes' body composition, regardless of weekly training time. Sport federations and coaches may improve athletes' body composition by targeting specific sedentary pursuits, i.e. total screen time and cell phone screen time, during athletes' recovery time. Highlights Even in athletes, SB can compromise total and regional body composition regardless of high training time. Screen time, specifically cell phone screen time seems to be the sedentary pursuit to target in athletes. Sport federations and coaches must control SB during athletes' recovery time.Over a millennia, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat various diseases in China. Bemcentinib research buy In recent years, more and more Chinese materia medica (CMM) have been studied in scientific research projects, applied in clinical practice, and their extracts have even appeared in some health products. However, the toxicity of some CMM is often overlooked, including hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, etc. In this review, the toxic components and their toxicological mechanisms of some toxic CMM were listed according to the chemical structure classification of toxic components. Afterwards, the traditional methods (processing and compatibility) and modern methods (structural modification, biotransformation, etc.) of attenuation of CMM were discussed. Since ancient times, it has been said that "fight fire with fire, fight poison with poison," and toxic CMM are of great significance in the treatment of difficult and severe diseases. The rational application of toxic CMM and their components in clinical practice was also exemplified in this review. While the pharmacological effects of TCMs have been emphasized, the scientific attenuation and rational application of toxic components should be concerned. We hope this review can provide a reference for future related research.Methamphetamine (METH) is an extremely addictive drug that has raised serious public health concerns recently. METH addiction not only results in neuronal cytotoxicity, but it also affects immune cell activity, including T lymphocytes. 6,4,7[Formula see text]-trihydroxyflavanone (THF), isolated from Dalbergia odorifera, has been studied for its antibacterial activity, but evidence for whether THF has an anti-cytotoxic and protective effect on T cell activation exposed to METH is lacking. In this study, results showed that treatment with THF was not cytotoxic to Jurkat T cells but dose-dependently mitigated the cytotoxicity induced by exposure to METH. The Western blot results demonstrating pre-treatment with THF maintained the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins and phosphorylation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR downregulated by treatment with METH. Furthermore, we found that decreased expression of IL-2 and CD69 by METH exposure was partially restored, and viability was significantly prevented by pre-treatment with THF in activated T cells. These findings were involved in re-elevated expression of anti-apoptotic proteins as well as recovered pathways including MAPK/PI3K/Akt/mTOR in activated T cells pre-exposed to METH. Our results suggest beneficial effects of THF against the cytotoxic and immune-modulating effect of METH on T cells and therapeutic potential of THF for patients with immunodeficiency caused by METH addiction.
