A number of biological tissues have been reported as behaving in an auxetic manner, defined by a negative Poisson's ratio. This describes the deformation of tissue which expands in the axial and the transverse directions simultaneously while under uniaxial tension; and contracts axially and transversely upon uniaxial compression. The discovery of auxetic behaviour within biological tissues has implications for the recreation of the auxetic loading environment within tissue engineering. Tissue engineers strive to recreate the natural properties of biological tissue and in order to recreate the unique loading environment of cells from auxetic tissue, an auxetic scaffold is required. A number of studies have used a variety of auxetic scaffolds within tissue engineering. Investigation into the effect of auxetic micro-environments created by auxetic scaffolds on cellular behaviour has demonstrated an increased cellular proliferation and enhanced differentiation. Here, we discuss studies which have identified auxetic behaviour within biological tissues, and where cells have been cultured within auxetic scaffolds, bringing together current knowledge of the potential use of auxetic materials in tissue engineering applications and biomedical devices.Treatment of (PN)NiX (X = NHdipp or OtBu; PN = N-phosphinoamidinate ligand) with Me2PhSiH in benzene solvent afforded the crystallographically characterized, antifacial-coordinated, dinuclear species 1, the formation of which corresponds to the hitherto unknown net Ni-H addition of two equivalents of the putative (PN)NiH intermediate across C[double bond, length as m-dash]C units within a single benzene molecule. Computational analysis supports the view of 1 as being comprised of two cationic (PN)NiII fragments ligated by a substituted butadiene dianion μ2-η3η3-C6H82- bridging group. Also described is the formation and characterization of three-coordinate (PN)Ni(alkyl) complexes stabilized by β-agostic (alkyl = Et, 2; n-Bu, 3; n-hexyl, 4) or γ-agostic (alkyl = neopentyl, 5) interactions, and our efforts to employ 2 and 3 as synthons for the generation of (PN)NiH via β-hydride elimination. Notably, compound 5 represents both the first crystallographically characterized three-coordinate Ni-alkyl complex featuring a heterobidentate ligation, and the first neutral γ-agostic NiII-alkyl complex.Dielectric elastomers (DEs) are promising electroactive artificial muscles for use in soft machines. However, achieving anisotropy and sub-kV actuation voltage remains a great challenge for DE actuators. Herein, we report a facile method to fabricate ultrathin anisotropic DE films of an amorphous triblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-butyl acrylate-b-styrene) (SBAS) for soft actuators. The modulus of anisotropic SBAS in one direction can be modulated from 0.3 MPa to 10.5 MPa, and the modulus in the orthogonal direction remains the same as that of the pristine film (0.3 MPa). The anisotropy endows soft DE actuators with the directional-preferred response to an applied electric field and programmable multiple actuation morphs. These anisotropic SBAS films allowed us to fabricate compact soft robotics with high maneuverability, including soft grippers for object manipulation and crawling robots with reversible moving ability under an actuation voltage around 800 V.We report chemistry suitable for the solid-phase synthesis of DNA-encoded libraries with an unusually high level of structural diversity. The strategy involves "exploding" an immobilized aldehyde into a plethora of different functional groups under DNA-compatible conditions.Visible-light-induced C-H phosphorylation of para-CAr-H and heteroarenes was realized using cost-effective RuCl3 as a catalyst. The reaction conditions are green and environmentally friendly, using water as a solvent at room temperature and without ligands. A broad range of highly functional organophosphorus compounds were obtained via a cross-dehydrogenation-coupling (CDC) reaction. In addition, we also proved that RuCl3 is a photocatalyst via its absorption spectrum and on/off light experiments.A sensitive electrochemical sensor featuring novel composites of gold and carbon nanocomplexes alongside a polymerized amino acid was developed for the determination of uric acid (UA) and dopamine (DA) concentrations in both buffer and human urine sample solutions. The sensor was fabricated by electropolymerization of l-methionine (l-Met) followed by coating of carbon nanotube-graphene complexes and electrodeposition of gold nanoparticles on a screen printed carbon electrode surface. The electrode surfaces were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, and the electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. Linear ranges of 0.05-3 μM and 1-35 μM with limits of detection of 0.0029 and 0.034 μM were achieved for DA and UA, respectively. In addition, the developed sensor was applied for the analysis of native UA and DA concentrations in undiluted and diluted human urine samples. The UA analysis results were compared to those obtained using high performance liquid chromatography and a fluorometric assay kit while the DA analysis results were compared to those obtained using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.Three-dimensional (3D) neural tissue cultures recapitulate the basic concepts during development and disease better than what can be obtained using conventional two-dimensional cultures. Here, we use a recombinant spider silk protein functionalized with a cell binding motif from fibronectin (FN-silk) in combination with a human recombinant laminin 521 (LN-521) to create a fully defined stem cell niche in 3D. ROCK inhibitor A novel method to assemble silk blended with LN-521 together with human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC) is used to create centimeter-sized foams, which upon cultivation develop into 3D cell constructs supported by a microfibrillar network. After initial cell expansion, neural differentiation was induced to form a homogenous layer of continuous neuroectodermal tissue that allows further differentiation into neuronal subtypes. The silk-supported 3D cell constructs could then be detached from the bottom of the well and cultured as floating entities, where cells appeared in distinctive radial organization resembling early neural tube.
