Innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) have proven to be effective contributors to high-quality health care. We examined the beneficial role AI can play in noninvasively grading vascular access aneurysms to reduce high-morbidity events, such as rupture, in ESRD patients on hemodialysis.

Our AI instrument noninvasively examines and grades aneurysms in both arteriovenous fistulas and arteriovenous grafts. Aneurysm stages were adjudicated by 3 vascular specialists, based on a grading system that focuses on actions that need to be taken. Our automatic classification of aneurysms builds on 2 components (a) the use of smartphone technology to capture aneurysm appearance and (b) the analysis of these images using a cloud-based convolutional neural network (CNN).

There was a high degree of correlation between our noninvasive AI instrument and the results of the adjudication by the vascular experts. Our results indicate that CNN can automatically classify aneurysms. We achieved a >90% classification accuracy in the validation images.

This is the first quality improvement project to show that an AI instrument can reliably grade vascular access aneurysms in a noninvasive way, allowing rapid assessments to be made on patients who would otherwise be at risk for highly morbid events. Moreover, these AI-assisted assessments can be made without having to schedule separate appointments and potentially even via telehealth.

Uncontrolled systemic inflammation may occur in severe coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). We have previously shown that endotoxemia, presumably from the gut, may complicate COVID-19. However, the role of endotoxin adsorbent (EA) therapy to mitigate organ dysfunction in COVID-19 has not been explored.

We conducted a retrospective observational study in COVID-19 patients who received EA therapy at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, between March 13 and April 17, 2020. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/nms-p937-nms1286937.html Relevant clinical and laboratory data were collected by inpatient chart review.

Among 147 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, 6 patients received EA therapy. All of the 6 patients had severe COVID-19 infection with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Among these, 5 of them were mechanically ventilated and 4 had complications of secondary bacterial infection. The endotoxin activity assay (EAA) results of pre-EA therapy ranged from 0.47 to 2.79. The choices of EA therapy were at the discretion of attending physicians. One patient was treated with oXiris® along with continuous renal replacement therapy, and the others received polymyxin B hemoperfusion sessions. All patients have survived and were finally free from the mechanical ventilation as well as had improvement in PaO2/FiO2 ratio and decreased EAA level after EA therapy.

We demonstrated the clinical improvement of severe COVID-19 patients with elevated EAA level upon receiving EA therapy. However, the benefit of EA therapy in COVID-19 ARDS is still unclear and needs to be elucidated with randomized controlled study.

However, its electrochemical property was severely limited due to the inherent poor conductivity and drastic volume variation during the charging/discharging process. To overcome this disadvantage, we grew Sn-MOF directly on graphene oxide (GO) layers to synthesize a double carbon conductive network-encapsulated SnO2nanoparticles (SnO2/C/rGO) via a facile solvothermal method. During the process, Sn-MOF skeleton transformed into porous carbon shells, in which nanosized SnO2particles (~8nm) were embedded, while GO template was reduced to highly conductive rGO layer tightly wrapping the SnO2/C particles. This double-carbon structure endowed SnO2/C/rGO anode with enhanced specific capacity and rate property both in lithium ion batteries (LIB) and sodium ion batteries (SIB). The SnO2/C/rGO anode showed a highly reversible specific capacity of 1038.3 mAh g-1at 100 mA g-1, and maintained a stable capacity of 720.2 mAh g-1(70.1%) under 500 mA g-1after 150 cycles in LIBs. Similarly, highly reversible capacity of 350.7 mAh g-1(81.1%) under 100 mA g-1after 150 cycles was also achieved in SIBs. This work provided a promising strategy in improving the electrochemical properties of SnO2nanoparticles (NPs), as well as other potential anode materials suffering from huge volume change and poor conductivity. In this work, a multifunctional theranostic nanocomposite based on CoFe2O4@polyacrylic acid (PAA)-Folic Acid (FA) Doxorubicin (Dox)loadNPs was designed for the multifunctional cancer treatment. Several techniques such as TEM, DLS,ζ-potential, vibrating sample magnetometer, XRD, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer were applied for investigating physicochemical properties of the nanosystem. The percentage of the loaded drug, loading efficiency,in vitrorelease (pH 5.4 and 7.4),invitroMRI measurements, and MTT assay (4T1 and 9A9 cell lines) were evaluated. Results showed that the percentage of loaded drug and loading efficiency was 53.33 ± 3.5 and 80.00 ± 5.3%, respectively, showing the system's high ability for Dox encapsulation. Release study showed that Dox loaded in the CoFe2O4@PAA-FA(Dox)loadNPs released faster at pH 5.4 than pH 7.4.In vitro, MRI measurements confirmed that CoFe2O4@PAA NPs could be used as a contrast agent in MRI measurements withr2 = 18.2 mM-1s-1. MTT assay demonstrated the biocompatibility of NPs, also showed a more efficient therapeutic effect for CoFe2O4@PAA-FA(Dox)loadNPs than free Dox and CoFe2O4@PAA(Dox)loadNPs.
