The proportion of ELISA-confirmed LFA results declined over time, in line with contracting NCP IgG titres during longitudinal follow-up. Although vaccine hesitancy has existed among a small percentage of people for centuries, its harmful effects are likely to be more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic than ever before. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy will pose substantial risks for both people who delay or refuse to be vaccinated and the wider community. It will make communities unable to reach thresholds of coverage necessary for herd immunity against COVID-19, thus unnecessarily perpetuating the pandemic and resulting in untold suffering and deaths. Vaccine hesitancy is pervasive, misinformed, contagious, and is not limited to COVID-19 vaccination. Our work shows that vaccine hesitancy is a complex and dynamic social process that reflects multiple webs of influence, meaning, and logic. People's vaccination views and practices usually comprise an ongoing engagement that is contingent on unfolding personal and social circumstances, which can potentially change over time. Therefore, as COVID-19 vaccination rolls out globally, scientists and decision-makers need to investigate the scale and determinants of vaccine hesitancy in each setting; so that tailored and targeted strategies can be developed to address it.Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate health-related quality of life in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and investigate the possible risk factors for poor quality of life in patients with RVO.Methods Participants in the study were 67 patients with RVO, 42 male and 25 female, mean-aged 73.1 ± 10.9 years, and 70 sex- and age-matched controls. Demographic data, lifestyle factors and medical history were recorded. All patients underwent best-corrected visual acuity measurement, dilated fundoscopy and optical coherence tomography. All participants completed two questionnaires assessing quality of life (EQ-5D, NEI VFQ-25). Risk factors for health-related quality of life in RVO patients were investigated.Results Patients with RVO exhibited significantly lower composite score for VFQ-25 compared to controls (74.1 ± 3.8 vs. 91.7 ± 3.9 for patients and controls, respectively, p less then .001). In addition, RVO patients had significantly lower EQ-5D Index score compared to controls (0.88 ± 0.15 vs. 0.92 ± 0.12 for patients and controls, respectively, p = .043). Risk factors associated with quality of life in patients with RVO were found the alcohol consumption, the presence of thyroidopathy, coagulation disorders, visual acuity in the eye with RVO, central retinal thickness, the type of edema, the presence of ischemia and the condition of external limiting membrane. Methods Implementation for infection mitigation and ongoing care of patients included (1) the creation of a strategic planning team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and administrators to develop guidance and workflows, (2) continuous reassessment of patients' needs for hospital services and visit frequency, (3) the use of telemedicine to replace in-person visits, (4) the use of satellite regional centers to manage patients living outside NYC, (5) pre-screening of patients prior to visits for risks and symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, (6) day-of-service screening for risks or symptoms of COVID-19 infection, (7) surveillance testing of children and their caregivers, and (8) creation of cohort plans for the management of COVID-19 positive and uninfected patients within the same institution, in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Results We describe the timeline for planning mitigation during the first weeks of the pandemic, and detail in a stepwise fashion the rationale and implementation of COVID-19 containment efforts in the context of a large pediatric oncology program. Discussion Our experience offers a model on which to base strategic planning efforts at other pediatric oncology centers, for continued preparedness to combat the threat posed by SARS-CoV-2 worldwide.The full impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is yet to be well established; however, as the pandemic spreads, and early results emerge, unmet needs are being revealed, and pressing questions are being asked about who is most affected, how, where, and in what ways government responses might be exacerbating inequalities. A number of scholars have called for more in-depth critical research on COVID-19 and health inequalities to produce a strong empirical evidence based on these issues. There are also justifiable concerns about the scarcity of health-equity actions oriented analyses of the situation and calls for more empirical evidence on COVID-19 and health inequalities. A preliminary condition to establish this type of information is strong capacity to conduct health inequalities research. Worldwide, however, this type of capacity is limited, which, alongside other challenges, will likely hinder capacities of many countries to develop comprehensive equity-oriented COVID-19 analyses, and adequate responses to present and future crises.
