BACKGROUND Accumulating evidence indicates that cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a minor subpopulation of cancer cells that may be the primary source of cancer invasion, migration, and widespread metastasis. MATERIAL AND METHODS We investigated the effects of dihydroartemisinin (DHA) on distant metastasis of laryngeal carcinoma and the relevant mechanism. In vitro, we used the Hep-2 human laryngeal squamous carcinoma cell line (Hep-2 cells) to assemble CSCs, using CD133 as the cell surface marker. Our data demonstrate that the CD133⁺ subpopulation of Hep-2 cells has greater invasion and migration capabilities than CD133⁻ cells. We also evaluated the effects of DHA, a newly defined STAT3 inhibitor, on the invasion and migration of CD133⁺ Hep-2 cells under hypoxia and IL-6 stimulation, both of which can activate STAT3 phosphorylation. RESULTS CSCs exhibited a significant decrease in the ability of migration and invasion upon the application of DHA, along with simultaneous alterations in related proteins, both in cultured cells and in xenograft tumors. The associated signaling proteins included phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and E-cadherin, which are closely involved in cancer invasion and metastasis. In vivo, we found that DHA can reduce lung metastasis formation caused by CSCs and prolong survival in mice, and can inhibit STAT3 activation, downregulate MMP-9, and upregulate E-cadherin in lung metastatic tumors. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, our findings indicate that CSCs possess stronger invasive and metastatic capabilities than non-CSCs, and DHA inhibits invasion and prevents metastasis induced by CSCs by inhibiting STAT3 activation.BACKGROUND Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a rare subtype of B-cell neoplasm that can have diverse presentations. When it involves the pancreas (i.e., pancreatic lymphoma), it can mimic metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Pancreatic lymphoma and adenocarcinoma often have similar clinical, laboratory, and radiographic features making the distinction challenging without pathological tissue examination. The differentiation of these 2 entities is important as the prognosis of pancreatic lymphoma is certainly more favorable with a chance of cure with chemoimmunotherapy. CASE REPORT We present an unusual case of EBV-positive DLBCL involving the pancreas that was initially believed to be metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The patient was treated with chemoimmunotherapy and had a remarkable response. This is the first known case of EBV-positive DLBCL involving the pancreas that was successfully treated with chemoimmunotherapy. CONCLUSIONS EBV-positive DLBCL can have diverse presentations, including a pancreatic mass with multi-organ involvement, which mimics metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The prognosis of EBV-positive DLBCL is thought to be worse than that of EBV-negative tumors. However, it remains certainly superior to that of its adenocarcinoma counterpart with conventional chemoimmunotherapy.PURPOSE To predict programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression of tumor cells in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients by using a radiomics study based on CT images and clinicopathologic features. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 390 confirmed NSCLC patients who performed chest CT scan and immunohistochemistry (IHC) examination of PD-L1 of lung tumors with clinic data were collected in this retrospective study, which were divided into two cohorts namely, training (n = 260) and validation (n = 130) cohort. Clinicopathologic features were compared between two cohorts. Lung tumors were segmented by using ITK-snap kit on CT images. Total 200 radiomic features in the segmented images were calculated using in-house texture analysis software, then filtered and minimized by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression to select optimal radiomic features based on its relevance of PD-L1 expression status in IHC results and develop radiomics signature. Radiomics signature and clinicopatholograpy.PURPOSE Segmentation of magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the left ventricle (LV) plays a key role in quantifying the volumetric functions of the heart, such as the area, volume, and ejection fraction. Traditionally, LV segmentation is performed manually by experienced experts, which is both time-consuming and prone to subjective bias. This study aims to develop a novel capsule-based automated segmentation method to automatically segment the LV from images obtained by cardiac MRI. METHOD The technique applied for segmentation uses Fourier analysis and the circular Hough transform (CHT) to indicate the approximate location of the LV and a network capsule to precisely segment the LV. The neurons of the capsule network output a vector and preserve much of the information about the input by replacing the largest pooling layer with convolutional strides and dynamic routing. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a virtual training program based on a RAPAEL smart glove on the upper extremity function and quality of life of community-dwelling individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke. METHODS Thirty-six outpatients diagnosed as having a first stroke were selected to receive a therapeutic rehabilitation program at local rehabilitation units. Participants were allocated randomly into two groups the non-immersive VR training (intervention) group and the recreational activity (control) group. The intervention group received non-immersive VR training using a RAPAEL smart glove for 30 minutes per session, 3 days a week for 8 weeks. The control group performed recreational activities for the same period and also participated in a conventional rehabilitation program for 30 minutes per session, 3 days a week for 8 weeks as an additional therapy.
