Amongst patients with de-novo AHF, women had higher mortality rates compared with men. The observed gender-related differences in de-novo AHF patients highlight the need for further and deeper research in this field.

The assessment of functional status is a more appropriate measure in the older people than traditional healthcare outcomes. The present study aimed to analyse the association between functional status assessed using the Barthel Index and length of stay, in-hospital mortality, discharge destination, and Diagnosis-Related Groups-based cost.
This study was a retrospective study that used administrative data from patients older than 65 discharged from the University Hospital of Padua (Italy) in 2016.
A logistic regression model for categorical variables (length of stay, in-hospital mortality, and discharge destination) and a generalized linear model with gamma distributions and log links for continuous variables (cost of hospitalization) were used to evaluate associations with the Barthel Index.
A total of 13,484 admissions were included in the analysis. In-hospital mortality, safe discharge, and length of stay were higher in patients with severe dependence than in patients with mild/no dependence with a 12-fold increased risk of death (OR=12.81; 95% CI 9.22-18.14), a 4 times greater likelihood of safe discharge (OR=4.64; 95% CI 3.96-5.45), and a 2-fold increase in length of stay (OR=2.56; 95% CI 2.34-2.81). On the other hand, no significant association was found between the cost of hospitalization and the Barthel Index.
Barthel Index was strongly associated with in-hospital mortality, discharge destination, and length of stay. The costs of hospitalization, however, were not related to patients' functional impairment.
The study considers functional status as an indicator of hospital outcomes. Better comprehension of the relationship between functional status and healthcare outcomes may help with early and adequate healthcare planning and resource management.

To measure the frequencies of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and adverse pregnancy outcomes among women receiving either aetiological testing or syndromic management for STIs.
Non-randomised prospective cohort study.
Primary healthcare facilities in Tshwane, South Africa.
HIV-infected pregnant women attending antenatal care services.
Participants were enrolled to receive aetiological testing using Xpert® CT/NG and Xpert® TV assays or standard syndromic management. Outcome data were collected at the postnatal care visit (≤30days from delivery) and from maternity records. Enrolment gestational age-adjusted relative risk (aRR) was calculated.
STI prevalence at postnatal visit, and frequency of adverse pregnancy outcomes (preterm birth, low birthweight).
We enrolled 841 women. The prevalence of any STI at baseline was 40%; Chlamydia trachomatis 30%, Neisseria gonorrhoeae 5.6%, Trichomonas vaginalis 20%. The prevalence of STIs at postnatal care was lower among those receiving aetiological testing compared with those receiving syndromic management (14% versus 23%; aRR 0.61; 95% CI 0.35-1.05). No difference was observed between study groups for frequency of preterm birth (23% versus 23%; aRR 1.2, 95% CI 0.81-1.8) and low birth weight (15% versus 13%; aRR 1.1, 95% CI 0.66-1.7).
Aetiological testing provides an effective intervention to reduce the high burden of STIs in pregnant women in South Africa; however, the optimal implementation strategy remains to be determined.
Aetiological testing effectively reduces the burden of sexually transmitted infections in pregnancy.

Effective interventions supporting cancer survivors in work participation are lacking, possibly due to the poor fit between interventions and cancer survivors' needs. The 'Readiness for Return To Work' (RRTW) questionnaire could facilitate intervention development tailored to cancer survivors' needs. We performed a cross-cultural translation and adaptation of this questionnaire into Dutch and pre-tested its psychometric properties among cancer survivors.
Questionnaire translation and adaptation were conducted using a systematic approach of forward translation, synthesis, backward translation, consolidation of translations with an expert committee, and pre-testing. Pre-testing consisted of interviewing 40 cancer survivors, who completed the questionnaire.
The translated and adapted RRTW questionnaire showed reasonable psychometric properties, that is high item-to-stage correlations and internal consistency for all RRTW stages, except for the prepared for action - self-evaluative stage.

The desert moss Syntrichia caninervis, an extremophile, offers novel insights into surviving desiccation and heat. The sequenced S. caninervis genome consists of 13 chromosomes containing 16 545 protein-coding genes and 2666 unplaced scaffolds. selleck kinase inhibitor Syntenic relationships within the S. caninervis and Physcomitrella patens genomes indicate the S. caninervis genome has undergone a single whole genome duplication event (compared to two for P. patens) and evidence suggests chromosomal or segmental losses in the evolutionary history of S. caninervis. The genome contains a large sex chromosome composed primarily of repetitive sequences with a large number of Copia and Gypsy elements. Orthogroup analyses revealed an expansion of ELIP genes encoding proteins important in photoprotection. The transcriptomic response to desiccation identified four structural clusters of novel genes. The genomic resources established for this extremophile offer new perspectives for understanding the evolution of desiccation tolerance in plants.
