Quantitative synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables the determination of fundamental tissue properties, namely, T1 and T2 relaxation times and proton density (PD), in a single scan. Myelin estimation and brain segmentation based on these quantitative values can also be performed automatically. This study aimed to reveal the changes in tissue characteristics and volumes of the brain according to age and provide age-specific reference values obtained by quantitative synthetic MRI.

This was a prospective study of healthy subjects with no history of brain diseases scanned with a multidynamic multiecho sequence for simultaneous measurement of relaxometry of T1, T2, and PD. We performed myelin estimation and brain volumetry based on these values. We performed volume-of-interest analysis on both gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) regions for T1, T2, PD, and myelin volume fraction maps. Tissue volumes were calculated in the whole brain, producing brain parenchymal volume, GM volume, WM volume, andonstrated in this study may be useful to discriminate brain disorders from healthy brains.
Our study showed changes according to age in tissue characteristic values and brain volumes using quantitative synthetic MRI. The reference values for age demonstrated in this study may be useful to discriminate brain disorders from healthy brains.
To evaluate the outcomes of customized corneal crosslinking (CXL) for treatment of progressive keratoconus (KC) using a transepithelial approach with supplemental oxygen.

Siena Crosslinking Center, Siena, Italy.

Prospective interventional case series.

Twenty-seven eyes of 24 patients (mean age 29.3 ± 7.3 years) with progressive KC underwent customized corneal CXL using a transepithelial approach with supplemental oxygen. Ultraviolet (UV)-A irradiation of 365 nm wavelength was delivered in an accelerated (30 mW/cm) pulsed-light UV light exposure in a 2-zone elliptical pattern. A total dose of 10 J/cm was delivered at the KC apex, surrounded by a broadbeam spot of 7.2 J/cm. After 0.25% riboflavin corneal soaking, the UV-A irradiation was initiated in the presence of additional oxygen (≥90% concentration) delivered through special goggles connected to an oxygen delivery system (flow-rate 2.5 liters per minute). Key outcome measures included corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), keratometry (AK, K1, K2eaningful improvements in corneal curvature and CDVA without significant adverse events.
There are few standardized neonatal neurobehavioral instruments available for longitudinal child development research. We adapted an established clinical tool, the Newborn Behavioral Observations (NBO) system, for research by standardizing the administration protocol and expanding the 3-point coding scale to 5 points.

We administered the 5-point NBO to 144 racially/ethnically diverse late preterm or term infants born to low-income women (average age 5 weeks). Cronbach's alphas were calculated to determine internal consistency reliability of Autonomic, Motor, Organization of State, and Responsivity subscales. We examined concurrent validity using subscale associations with infant salivary cortisol reactivity to the NBO and maternally reported infant temperament.

Two of the 4 NBO subscales, Organization of State and Responsivity, had excellent (0.91) and good (0.76) reliability, respectively, and were retained for further analyses. Infants with higher Organization of State scores (more optimal regulation)ggests that further psychometric research in other samples and likely refinement are needed. Given the paucity of neurobehavioral assessment tools for infants, these findings justify such research as next steps in the incremental progression toward the development of a practical, reliable, and predictive measure of early neurobehavioral development.
Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a severe pregnancy complication of monochorionic (identical) twins that results in markedly discordant in utero environments for each twin. The aim of this study was to test for differences in temperament between former donor (hypovolemic, smaller) and recipient (hypervolemic, larger) twins with TTTS.

Parents of dual survivors aged 3 to 7 years who underwent in utero laser surgery for TTTS were surveyed using the Children's Behavior Questionnaire-Very Short Form (CBQ-VSF). The CBQ-VSF assessed 3 traits Surgency, Negative Affect, and Effortful Control. Differences in traits between donor and recipients were assessed using a paired t test.

We studied 85 twin pairs treated in utero for TTTS. There were no statistically significant differences in Surgency, Negative Affect, or Effortful Control between recipients and donors, although score differences for each trait varied widely among sibling pairs.

Despite varied in utero environments, no temperament differences between donor and recipient monozygotic twins were found for the population as a whole. This finding may be of some reassurance to parents whose pregnancies are complicated by TTTS.

Tigecycline exerts significant beneficial effects against drug-resistant bacterial infections. The largely empirical medications used in clinical practice are often associated with wide individual differences in efficacy and safety. We investigated the associations between the pharmacokinetics of tigecycline and its efficacy and safety in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, with the aim of facilitating clinical applications of tigecycline.

ICU patients who were prescribed tigecycline in a hospital setting were prospectively included. Factors related to the clinical efficacy and safety of tigecycline were assessed by univariate and multivariate analyses.

This study included 45 patients, from whom a total of 63 blood samples were collected to determine steady-state trough plasma concentrations (Cmin) of tigecycline. The Cmin of tigecycline was 417.1 ± 263.8 ng/mL (mean ± SD). The multivariate analysis showed that the APACHE II scores [odds ratio (OR) = 0.874, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.733-0.901, P = 0.
