The effect of flexoelectric voltage on the electronic and optical properties of single- and double-wall carbon nanotubes is evaluated by the first-principles calculations. The voltage between the inner channel of curved sp2 carbon nanostructures and their surroundings scales linearly with nanotube wall curvature and can be boosted/reversed by appropriate outer wall functionalization. We predict and verify computationally that in double-wall nanotubes, flexoelectricity causes a straddling to staggered band gap transition. Accurate band structure calculations taking into account quasiparticle corrections and excitonic effects lead to an estimated critical diameter of ~24 Å for this transition. Double-wall nanotubes above this diameter have staggered band alignment and could be potentially used for charge separation in photovoltaic devices.Silver nanowires have attracted considerable attention as subdiffraction limited diameter waveguides in a variety of applications including cell endoscopy and photonic integrated circuitry. click here Optical signal transport occurs by coupling light into propagating surface plasmons, which scatter back into light further along the wire. However, these interconversions only occur efficiently at wire ends, or at defects along the wire, which are not controlled during synthesis. Here, we overcome this limitation, demonstrating the visible laser light-induced fabrication of gold nanostructures at desired positions on silver nanowires, and their utility as efficient in/out coupling points for light. The gold nanostructures grow via plasmon-induced reduction of Au(III) and are shown to be excellent "hotspots" for surface-enhanced Raman scattering.Structured light in the subwavelength scale is important for a broad range of applications ranging from lithography to imaging. Of particular importance is the ability to dynamically shift the pattern of the fields, which has led to the development of structured illumination microscopy. Further extension of structured illumination to plasmonic systems has enabled imaging beyond diffraction limit. However, structured illumination usually requires complicated optical setups entailing moving mechanical parts. Here a polarization tunable structured plasmonic field (SPF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The SPF is formed by surface plasmon interference (SPI) generated by a fishbone-shaped metasurface on a thin gold film. Importantly, the SPF can be continuously shifted by merely varying the linear polarization state of an incident beam. The precise control of the fringes of structured illumination and elimination of mechanical control will have great potential in subdiffractional imaging for practical applications.Lithium metal represents an ultimate anode material of lithium batteries for its high energy density. However, its large negative redox potential and reactive nature can trigger electrolyte decomposition and dendrite formation, causing unstable cycling and short circuit of batteries. Herein, we engineer a resilient solid electrolyte interphase on the Li anode by compositing the battery separator with organosulfur compounds and inorganic salts from garlic. These compounds take part in battery reactions to suppress dendrite growth through reversible electrochemistry and attenuate ionic concentration gradient. When the Li anode and the separator are paired with the LiFePO4 cathode, one obtains a battery delivering long-term cycling stability of 3000 cycles, a rate capacity of 100 mAh g-1 at 10 C (2.5 mA cm-2), a Coulombic efficiency of 99.9%, and a low battery polarization. Additionally, with high-loading 20 mg cm-2 LiFePO4 cathodes, an areal capacity of 3.4 mAh cm-2 is achieved at 0.3 C (1 mA cm-2).We demonstrate 3D mechanical manipulations, such as sliding, rotating, folding, flipping, and exfoliating, of 2D materials using a microdome polymer (MDP) via in situ real-time observation with an optical microscope. A dimethylpolysiloxane (PDMS)-based MDP is covered with a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) adhesion layer. This PVC-MDP structure enables us to achieve small and adjustable contact areas between the PVC-MDP and a 2D-material flake, which is typically between ∼10 and ∼100 μm in diameter. The adhesion between the PVC polymer and 2D materials is fully tunable with temperature Strong adhesion at ∼70 °C allows pick-up of the 2D material, and release occurs at ∼130 °C when the adhesion is weak. Thus the PVC-MDP functions as a point-of-contact manipulator for 2D materials, permitting the 3D manipulation of 2D-material flakes. Our method could facilitate the expansion of van der Waals heterostructure fabrication technology and the development of preparation techniques for more complex 3D structures.A new methodology for N-exocyclic functionalization of iminosydnones was developed involving the addition of a large variety of nucleophiles on carbonyl-imidazolium-activated iminosydnones. This practical and highly versatile method provided access to new classes of iminosydnones and opened a straightforward synthetic route to prepare iminosydnone-based prodrugs. In this paper, we revealed a metal-free and visible light photoinduced method for the rapid construction of spirobi[indene] skeletons, providing a simple and efficient way for easy access to spirobi[indene] scaffolds under mild conditions along with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. This work presents a simple in situ synthesis and stabilization of fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with different sizes using engineered protein scaffolds in water. The protein-AuNC hybrids show a dual emission (450 and 700 nm) with a record photoluminescence quantum yield of 20%. These features impelled us to apply them to biohybrid light-emitting diodes as color down-converting filters or biophosphors. Efficient white emission (x/y CIE color coordinates of 0.31/0.29) and stabilities of more than 800 h were achieved. This represents a 2 orders of magnitude enhancement compared to the prior art. Besides the outstanding performance, the protein scaffold also infers a unique anisotropic emission character that is considered as a proof-of-concept of high interest for single-point lighting and display.
