Lignin deposited in plant cell walls negatively affects biomass conversion into advanced bioproducts. There is therefore a strong interest in developing bioenergy crops with reduced lignin content or altered lignin structures. Another desired trait for bioenergy crops is the ability to accumulate novel bioproducts, which would enhance the development of economically sustainable biorefineries. As previously demonstrated in the model plant Arabidopsis, expression of a 3-dehydroshikimate dehydratase in plants offers the potential for decreasing lignin content and overproducing a value-added metabolic coproduct (i.e., protocatechuate) suitable for biological upgrading.
The 3-dehydroshikimate dehydratase QsuB from Corynebacterium glutamicum was expressed in the bioenergy crop switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) using the stem-specific promoter of an O-methyltransferase gene (pShOMT) from sugarcane. The activity of pShOMT was validated in switchgrass after observation in-situ of beta-glucuronidase (GUS) activity ess the performance of the introduced traits and agronomic performances of the transgenic plants.
This study validates the transfer of the QsuB engineering approach from a model plant to switchgrass. We have demonstrated altered expression of two important traits lignin content and accumulation of a co-product. We found that the choice of promoter to drive QsuB expression should be carefully considered when deploying this strategy to other bioenergy crops. Field-testing of engineered QsuB switchgrass are in progress to assess the performance of the introduced traits and agronomic performances of the transgenic plants.
Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) is an important fruit crop worldwide. It was particularly sensitive to drought stress because of their fibrous and shallow root systems. Mutant rty of Arabidopsis thaliana ROOTY (RTY) results in increased endogenous auxin levels, more roots, and shoot growth. It is still unclear whether the rty gene improves stress tolerance in strawberry.
rty gene was isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana and placed under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter in the pBI121-rty binary vector carrying the selectable marker of neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPT II). The rty gene improved hormone-mediated drought tolerance in transgenic strawberry. The heterologous expression of rty in strawberry improved drought tolerance by promoting auxin and ABA accumulation. These phytohormones together brought about various physiological changes that improved drought tolerance via increased root production, trichome density, and stomatal closure. Our results suggested that a transgenic approach can be used to overcome the inherent trade-off between plant growth and drought tolerance by enhancing water use efficiency and reducing water loss rate under water shortage conditions.
Ensuring access to sufficient foods at all times is critical to veterans' health and well-being. Food insecurity has not been well explored in the veteran population. We examined the prevalence and predictors of food insecurity among low-income veterans, because the highest rates of food insecurity are among low-income households. We also examined rates of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation among subgroups at the highest risk of food insecurity.
We used univariate analyses and 2011-2017 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data on veterans aged ≥21 with family incomes <200% of the federal poverty level to estimate the prevalence of food insecurity. We used bivariate analyses to identify correlates of food insecurity and estimate SNAP participation rates among subgroups of low-income veterans. Percentages were weighted using NHIS survey weights.
Of 5146 low-income veterans, 22.5% reported being food insecure in the previous month. Food insecurity was significantly associt highest risk of food insecurity.
Some low-income veterans are at greater risk of food insecurity than other veterans. Postseparation programs, civilian support services, and veterans' health providers should be aware of the characteristics that place veterans at highest risk of food insecurity.
Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) involving the Waldeyer's ring (WR) and other extranodal head and neck sites are rare. We report our experience and PubMed literature review.
Retrospective single institution cohort study using lymphoma data base and PubMed literature search using twenty-six various search terms.
Twenty-nine patients were treated in our institution (1975-2018). MaleFemale 227, median age at diagnosis 33 years (15-64), stages I-IIIII-IV 254. Sites were nasopharynx (10), tonsil (9), parotid (5), mandible (2) and others (3). 20/29 patients received radiation therapy, 22/29 received chemotherapy. Ten years overall-survival and progression-free survival are 92% and 66% respectively. PubMed search showed 8766 citations and identified 357 patients including our patients. MaleFemale 199131, median age 45 years (5-89). Stages I-II in 286 (80%). Involvement was nasopharynx 109 (30.5%), tonsil 67 (18.8%), parotid 58 (16.2%), thyroid 45 (12.6%), adenoid 10 (2.8%), mandible 10 (2.8%) and others in 58 (16.2%). Pathology mixed cellularity 99 (27.7%), nodular sclerosis 88 (24.6%), nodular lymphocyte-predominant 56 (15.7%), lymphocyte rich 25 (7%), classical-HL-not otherwise specified 16 (4.5%) and lymphocyte depleted 7 (2%) patients. Treatment details are available for 233 patients; 165 (46%) received radiation therapy, 137 (38%) chemotherapy. Complete remission in 208 (58%), progressive disease 14 (4%), no information 135 (38%). Overall, treatment failure in 54 (15%). Thirty (8.4%) have died; 21 disease related. KM overall-survival at 5 and 10 years was 88.5% and 77.6% respectively.
This largest report showed that HL involving extranodal head and neck sites is not very uncommon and has excellent prognosis.
