The high number of vaccinations may be one of the reasons why children show a lower susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and milder severity when compared to adults. We have designed a study aimed at investigating whether the influenza vaccine may reduce the susceptibility and severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We retrospectively enrolled 635 patients who accessed our Emergency Department from March 1st to June 30th, 2020, and were diagnosed with COVID-19 infection confirmed by an RT-PCR on an oropharyngeal swab. Clinical data, outcomes, and influenza vaccination status were collected from the electronic medical records of our Hospital. We also used data from the Italian Health Ministry to compare the prevalence of flu vaccination among the general population of the Lazio Region and our enrolled patients. We then compared clinical outcomes between vaccinated and non-vaccinated patients, by univariate and multivariate analysis. COVID-19-positive patients older than 65 years reported a lower prevalence of flu vaccination when compared to the general population residing in the Lazio (p = 0.004). After correction for gender, age, and comorbidities, we found a lower risk of death at 60 days in patients with flu vaccination than in not vaccinated patients (p = 0.001). Our study shows that flu vaccination could reduce the mortality of COVID-19. Prospective studies are needed to confirm this result.Atrial fibrillation (AF), the commonest sustained cardiac arrhythmia affecting the adult population, is often casually discovered among hospitalized people. AF onset is indeed triggered by several clinical conditions such as acute inflammatory states, infections, and electrolyte disturbance, frequently occurring during the hospitalization. 1,4-Diaminobutane molecular weight We aimed to evaluate whether systematic AF screening, performed through an automated oscillometric blood pressure (BP) device (Microlife WatchBP Office AFIB, Microlife AG, Switzerland), is effective for detecting AF episodes in subjects admitted to an Internal Medicine ward. 163 patients consecutively hospitalized at the Unit of Internal Medicine of the "Santa Maria" Terni University Hospital between November 2019 and January 2020 (mean age ± standard deviation 77 ± 14 years, men proportion 40%) were examined. Simultaneously with BP measurement and AF screening, a standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) was performed in all subjects. AF was diagnosed by ECG in 29 patients (18%). AF screening showed overall 86% sensitivity and 96% specificity. False negatives (n = 4) had RR-interval coefficient of variation lower than true positives (n = 25, p  less then  0.01), suggesting a regular ventricular rhythm during AF. The repeated evaluation substantially confirmed the same level of agreement. AF screening was positive in all patients with new-onset AF (n = 6, 100%). Systematic AF screening in patients admitted to Internal Medicine wards, performed using the Microlife WatchBP Office AFIB, is feasible and effective. The opportunity to implement such technology in daily routine clinical practice to prevent undiagnosed AF episodes in hospitalized patients should be the subject of further research.
Multiple prominent hypointense vessels on susceptibility-weighted image (SWI) have been found in the ischemic territory of patients with acute ischemic stroke. SWI is suitable for venous imaging.

To evaluate the conditions of prominent hypointense vessel (PHV) in hyperacute and acute cerebral infarctions using susceptibility-weighted image (SWI).

Magnetic resonance images, including SWI, of 284 patients with acute infarction were evaluated. Based on lesion size, the infarction was classified as a small (< 3cm) or a large (> 3cm) infarction. Stage of infarction was classified as hyperacute (< 6h) or acute (> 6h, < 1week) on the basis of the onset of stroke. The site of infarction was categorised as a deep grey matter or a mixed (cortical and/or deep grey matter) infarction. The venous structures were analysed qualitatively for the calibre difference between ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheres. We quantitatively analysed the relationship between the size of areas with PHV on SWI and the abnormalities on MR angiography, apparent diffusion coefficient value, and signal intensity on T2WI in the 271 patients.
