A Guide to Duvet Togs & Fillings
The right duvet is crucial to a great night's sleep. With a myriad of togs, fillings and sizes to pick from, it can be a bit overwhelming!
Synthetic fibres have gained popularity due to their cost-effectiveness and softness that sinks in, as well as hypoallergenic properties. They can lead to overheating and be less breathable for sleepers who are warm.
What is a duvet?
A duvet's tog is a measurement of how warm or cool a duvet is when you sleep under it. The higher the rating of the tog is, the warmer the duvet. Togs are typically measured using a scale of 1 to 15, with the lower togs being lighter and cooler, whereas 15 togs are warmer but still warm enough to keep you warm throughout the night.
Duvet togs are determined by the efficiency of the duvet at capturing heat. This can be affected by a variety of factors, including the filling and the way the duvet was made. For example, natural fibres such as goose down or wool offer better thermal insulation than synthetic materials such as hollowfibre and are an ideal option for those concerned about allergies or prefer the soft and cozy feel of natural filling. The thickness of a duvet can also affect its tog, with heavier duvets often offering a higher tog than those with a thinner.
If you share a bed with a partner and have different requirements duvets are offered in sizes that can be customized to meet various needs. Some duvets can be divided in half to provide each person with a personal duvet to their own. Gingerlily's "half and half" silk duvet can be purchased for PS350. This lets each person pick the duvet they prefer without having to compromise.
Some people may prefer a higher tog rating ideal, but some may overheat, causing uncomfortable sweating or disrupting sleep. You should select the right duvet for your preferences, particularly when you're using blankets that are weighted.
The right duvet will ensure you sleep well, regardless of the season. If you're unsure which duvet tog is right for you, we'd recommend a seasonal selection, such as our 4.5 tog summer duvet as well as 9.5 tog winter duvet, that you can layer to provide you with maximum comfort all year round.
Seasonal duvets
It's a good idea if you have the space to store a variety of duvets. You can pick one for each season. You can stay cool on hot nights and cuddle with your blanket when it gets cold. It's also easy to go overboard with buying too many duvets - A low tog in summer will lead to sweating all night long, and a high tog for winter will mean you're feeling cold. If you're looking for the ideal solution to get the right balance for you, then take a look at one of our most popular all-season options.
This smart duvet from Slumberdown allows you to choose the best combination of two different togs. It comes with two sides, one having a cooler 4.5 tog and the other with warmer 10.5tog. They can be attached to each other or separated depending on the temperature. This duvet is also environmentally friendly, and had a super soft and silky feel. It is machine washable and dryer-friendly, and anti-allergenic. It was warm, cosy and didn't rustle much during the night.
Another option is Slumberdown. It is vegan-friendly and uses a natural fiber called tencel-lyocell. This fibre is made from trees, and absorbs moisture, so it is lightweight and soft and doesn't have the unpleasantness associated with animal down. It's also air-conditioned, making it a suitable choice for those who are hot at the night. It comes in single and double sizes.
This is yet another duvet that's all-season by Slumberdown. It's super cosy and the 13.5 tog can be attached to the 4.5tog side to create a bed that you can alter to your sleep temperature. We like that this duvet is convertible, which means you can change the sides according to your mood, and it's washed too. The duvet was comfortable and didn't move much during our test. Our test participants also appreciated the high-end finish and the fact that it came with a durable cotton cover.
Custom duvets
A custom duvet is a wonderful way to bring style and comfort to your bed. Select a fabric to match your room's aesthetic and make a pattern you like. You can also add trim or ruffles to create an elegant appearance. Be certain to remember that a custom duvet must remain functional and simple to use.
Custom-designed duvets can be machine washed, making them easy to wash and hygienic. They also can save space in your closet and eliminate the need for frequent trips to the dry-cleaner. A majority of them are made from soft, breathable material which is able to ward off dust mites. what does tog mean for duvet can even choose to make your duvets embroidered with names or initials to make it truly unique.
The first step to design a custom duvet is to take its measurements. This will allow you to figure out how much fabric is needed. Once you have the measurements, you can purchase the perfect duvet. The covers are available in a range of sizes from single to super-king. They are also available in a range of sizes that range from light summer options to weightier winter options.
The majority of duvets can be reversible, but you can also choose to have one without an inverse. This makes it simpler to put together the bed and is an excellent option for children's rooms. You can also buy matching pillow shams, a bed skirt and other bedding items to complete your bedding.
All season duvets
If you're a fan of a natural duvet but find yourself changing between a lighter summer duvet and a heavier winter one each season and need to switch between them, then an all-season duvet is a good option for you. The idea behind it is to keep you warm throughout the spring, summer and autumn an all-season duvet typically consists of two separate duvets, each with different Tog ratings. The first is typically a lighter, summer duvet, typically with a Tog rating of about 4.5. The second is generally more warm with a Tog score of 9 or 10.5 togs. The two duvets are then connected to create a warm, cozy winter duvet.
A 3-in-1 duvet is another option if you're looking for the flexibility of having a light summer and a warmer winter duvet in your bed at the same at the same time. These typically include a 4.5 tog and 9-tog duvet. They can be used in a variety of ways or joined together. They are a good choice for hot sleepers who are uncomfortable to sleep in heavier duvets in summer, and cold sleepers who find a lighter summer duvet is too thin.
This duvet from Brook + Wilde was a winner in our test for its luxurious feel and close to a perfect score. The snap studs which join the layers were simple to use. It has two layers one of which is 4.5 tog and the other, 8 tog. The duvet was also simple to machine wash. This could be a problem for some feather duvets.
If you share a bed with a person who sleeps at a different temperature to your own, then a half and half duvet may be the solution. This Slumberdown all-season duvet has an extremely light 4.5 tog side and an affluent 10.5 tog side. These can be mixed and matched based on the temperature you're experiencing that particular night.
We recommend the Slumberdown Cosy Nights duvet if you want something warm and cosy. It's extremely warm and soft and provides a great night's sleep. It's on the pricey side however, if you're a cold sleeper it's an investment worth the cost.
