Objective To evaluate whether new uptake of flavored e-cigarettes is more strongly associated with subsequent smoking initiation and cessation than uptake of unflavored e-cigarettes, separately for youths (12-17 years), emerging adults (18-24 years), and prime-age adults (25-54 years). Design, setting, and participants This cohort study conducted secondary data analyses of longitudinal survey data from waves 1 to 4 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (collected from 2013 to 2018). The analytic sample was limited to 17 929 respondents aged 12 to 54 years at wave 1 who completed at least 3 consecutive waves of the survey and did not use e-cigarettes at baseline. Data were collected from 2013 to 2018 and analyzed in February 2020. Exposures Flavored vs unflavored e-cigarette use reported in wave 2 of the Populon in adults (AOR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.02-1.75; P = .03). Vaping nontobacco flavors was no more associated with youth smoking initiation than vaping tobacco-flavors (AOR in youth, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.16-2.76; P = .56) but was associated with increased adult smoking cessation (AOR in adults, 2.28; 95% CI, 1.04-5.01; P = .04). Conclusions and relevance In this study, adults who began vaping nontobacco-flavored e-cigarettes were more likely to quit smoking than those who vaped tobacco flavors. Objective Determine the best location and aesthetics of the female to male NAC. Methods Patients who underwent female to male mastectomy with free nipple grafting were included. NAC position is confirmed using a vertical coordinate at the level of the 4th rib near the border of the pectoralis muscle and a horizontal coordinate determined by dividing each unilateral chest into vertical thirds from midline to anterior axillary line laterally. The NAC position is confirmed at the junction of the middle and lateral third. Symmetry is ensured bilaterally by creating a triangle and transposing it side to side; the base lies from sternal notch to inframammary fold in the midline and the apex is adjusted to the NAC. A 24-question survey was distributed postoperatively to assess the patient's thoughts about their chest, nipples, scar, and overall experience with the gender affirmation process using a 5-point Likert scale. Results Thirty-one patients were included in this study. Eighteen patients responded to the post-mastectomy survey, all of whom were highly satisfied with the aesthetic result postoperatively. All patients felt comfortable with their exposed chest. Nipple location was particularly highly received with 100% satisfaction rate (mean Likert score, 4.72). Nipple size and shape received a mean Likert score of 4.17 and 3.89, respectively. The limited availability of critical spindle components, protein gradients, sequestration of spindle components, or post-translational modification and differential expression levels have been implicated in the regulation of spindle length and the spindle assembly/elongation velocity in a cell size-dependent manner. In this review, we will discuss the phenomenon and mechanisms of spindle length, spindle shape and spindle elongation velocity scaling with cell size.Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic human pathogen that is able to produce several virulence factors such as pyocyanin, rhamnolipids and elastase. In the clinical reference strain PAO1, synthesis of these virulence factors is regulated transcriptionally by quorum sensing (QS) and post-transcriptionally by the Rsm system. Herein, we investigated the role of these systems in the control of the pyocyanin, rhamnolipids and elastase production in the marine strain ID4365. We found that this strain carries a nonsense mutation in lasR that makes it a natural mutant in the Las QS system. However, its QS response is still functional with the Rhl system activating virulence factors synthesis. We found that the Rsm system affects virulence factors production, since overexpression of RsmA reduces pyocyanin production whereas RsmY overexpression increases its synthesis. Unexpectedly, and in contrast to the type strain PAO1, inactivation of rsmA increases pyocyanin but reduces elastase and rhamnolipids production by a reduction of RhlR levels. Thus, QS and Rsm systems are involved in regulating virulence factors production, but this regulation is different to the PAO1 strain even though their genomes are highly conserved. It is likely that these differences are related to the different ecological niches in which these strains lived.Background The cost of high-throughput sequencing is rapidly decreasing, allowing researchers to investigate genomic variations across hundreds or even thousands of samples in the post-genomic era.
