In this paper, we studied the relationships between 20 amino acids in 33 species and found there were three constraints between 20 amino acids, such as the relatively stable mean carbon and hydrogen (C H) ratios (0.50), similarity interactions between the constituent ratios of amino acids, and the frequency of amino acids according with Poisson distribution under certain conditions. We demonstrated that the unequal distribution of 64 codons and the choice of amino acids in molecular evolution would be constrained to remain stable C H ratios. The constituent ratios and frequency of 20 amino acids in a species or a protein are two determinants of protein sequence evolution, so this finding showed the constraints between 20 amino acids played an important role in protein sequence evolution.Healthy ecosystems such as forests and wetlands have a great potential to support adaptation to climate change and are the foundation of sustainable livelihoods. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) can help to protect and maintain healthy ecosystems providing resilience against the impacts of climate change. This paper explores the role of EbA in reconciling socio-economic development with the conservation and restoration of nature in Lake Victoria Basin, Kenya, East Africa. Using selected ecosystems in the Lake region, the paper identifies key EbA approaches and explores trade-offs and synergies at spatial and temporal scales and between different stakeholders. The research methods used for this study include site visits, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, participatory workshops and literature reviews. An analytical framework is applied to advance the understanding of EbA approaches and how they lead to synergies and trade-offs between ecosystem services provision at spatial and temporal scales and multiple stakeholders. Our results show that EbA approaches such as ecosystem restoration have the potential to generate multiple adaptation benefits as well as synergies and trade-offs occurring at different temporal and spatial scales and affecting various stakeholder groups. Our paper underscores the need to identify EbA trade-offs and synergies and to explore the ways in which they are distributed in space and time and between different stakeholders to design better environmental and development programmes.Recent research suggests that nitrogen (N) cycling microbes are important for coral holobiont functioning. In particular, coral holobionts may acquire bioavailable N via prokaryotic dinitrogen (N2) fixation or remove excess N via denitrification activity. However, our understanding of environmental drivers on these processes in hospite remains limited. Employing the strong seasonality of the central Red Sea, this study assessed the effects of environmental parameters on the proportional abundances of N cycling microbes associated with the hard corals Acropora hemprichii and Stylophora pistillata. Fludarabine Specifically, we quantified changes in the relative ratio between nirS and nifH gene copy numbers, as a proxy for seasonal shifts in denitrification and N2 fixation potential in corals, respectively. In addition, we assessed coral tissue-associated Symbiodiniaceae cell densities and monitored environmental parameters to provide a holobiont and environmental context, respectively. While ratios of nirS to nifH gene copy numbers varied between seasons, they revealed similar seasonal patterns in both coral species, with ratios closely following patterns in environmental nitrate availability. Symbiodiniaceae cell densities aligned with environmental nitrate availability, suggesting that the seasonal shifts in nirS to nifH gene abundance ratios were probably driven by nitrate availability in the coral holobiont. Thereby, our results suggest that N cycling in coral holobionts probably adjusts to environmental conditions by increasing and/or decreasing denitrification and N2 fixation potential according to environmental nitrate availability. Microbial N cycling may, thus, extenuate the effects of changes in environmental nitrate availability on coral holobionts to support the maintenance of the coral-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis.Metal oxide-loaded biochars are a promising material to remove phosphate from polluted water to ultra-low concentrations. To facilitate preparing the metal oxide-loaded biochar with the best phosphate adsorption performance, five biochars loaded with Al, Ca, Fe, La and Mg oxides, respectively (Al-BC, Ca-BC, Fe-BC, La-BC and Mg-BC) were produced using Phragmites australis pretreated with 0.1 mol AlCl3, CaCl2, FeCl3, LaCl3 and MgCl2, respectively, characterized, and phosphate adsorption kinetics and isotherms of the biochars were determined. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacities (Qm ) of the biochars ranked as Al-BC (219.87 mg g-1) > Mg-BC (112.45 mg g-1) > Ca-BC (81.46 mg g-1) > Fe-BC (46.61 mg g-1) > La-BC (38.93 mg g-1). The time to reach the adsorption equilibrium ranked as La-BC (1 h) less then Ca-BC (12 h) less then Mg-BC (24 h) = Fe-BC (24 h) less then Al-BC (greater than 72 h). Qm of Ca-BC, Fe-BC, La-BC and Mg-BC depend on the molar content of metals in the biochars. The small phosphate adsorption rate of Al-BC is due to the slow intra-particle diffusion of phosphate attributed to the undeveloped porosity and dispersed distribution of AlOOH crystals on the Al-BC surface. Mg-BC is suggested for phosphate removal from water considering adsorption rate and capacity. Al-BC is applicable when a long contact time is allowed, e.g. as a capping material to immobilize phosphate in lake sediments.
