What is the Lowest Tog Duvet?
It's hot summer months or an autumn or Winter duvet, finding your ideal tog rating is contingent on many variables including your individual style of sleep and climate.
If you're a fan of hot sleepers or reside in a climate that is warm choose an ultra-low tog duvet with a rating below 4.5.
1.0
The ideal duvet will depend on your personal preferences and some environmental factors. For instance, the temperature of your bedroom will fluctuate with the seasons. This is the reason it's important to have a lighter summer duvet, and a heavier winter duvet.
You might have noticed that certain duvets are tagged with the tog rating, which gives you an idea of how warm they will be. The more high the tog rating, the warmer the duvet. However, a duvet's rating should be taken with some caution as it is based on a laboratory calculation on a flat surface and will change when draped over your bed.
A 1.0 tog is the lowest duvet you can buy, and it provides very little or no warmth. It is usually made of cotton or polyester and can feel a little cold and hard on a hot night, although it could be useful as an extra layer of bedding in the event of a humid or hot room. A 4.5 tog duvet is perfect for summer and will keep you cool during hot summer nights. A 7.5 tog duvet is perfect for autumn and spring as well as a combination between a winter duvet for the coldest winter months. We also have an all-season duvet which offers the best of both.
4.5
A tog rating is present on the majority of duvets. It refers to how well the bedding can trap heat to keep you warm at night. A lower tog will make your bed seem more airy and cooler during warmer months. For example our duck feather and Down duvet has a soft 2.5-tog rating and a 233-thread count of pure cotton cover.
In between seasons, for instance between the seasons of Spring and Autumn opt for a medium-tog duvet like our 7.5-tog option. This will give just the right amount warmth. You could also consider an all-seasons comforter, which comes with two duvets (a low tog duvet and high tog duvet) in one. This lets you switch between them based on the temperature and to have a spare duvet to use for guests.
The weight of the duvet is usually determined by the filling. Natural materials like feathers and down are more breathable, so you can enjoy a lighter duvet. However synthetic duvets are a good choice for those who are allergic to feathers or down since they're hypoallergenic, and usually constructed from anti-static fibers. This reduces dust mites, and can help you sleep better.
7.5
The most luxurious duvets provide an extra layer of warmth and insulation in the winter months. These duvets are ideal for those who sleep cold and prefer to cover themselves with blankets. But, it's important to note that this rating may still be too hot for some people, and could cause them to overheat during the night.
When selecting a high-temperature duvet, it is important to take into consideration the type of fill used, as different materials will affect the level of warmth and thermal properties that a duvet can provide. Natural fibres like feathers and down are better insulation than synthetic fillings. Therefore, a duvet made of these materials may weigh more than one made from synthetic materials, however, it will provide the same thermal insulation to keep you warm and cozy.
Some bedding brands have chosen to ditch traditional tog ratings, and instead classify their bedding according to the materials that regulate temperatures. This allows customers to have a duvet that can be used all year round without the need to purchase a separate summer and winter duvet, saving them money and space in their bed. For instance, UK-based brand Simba has created a range of bedding made of breathable cotton that draws heat away from the body and helps to regulate temperatures. They offer a duvet with 7.5 tog that is perfect for autumn, spring and winter.
10.5
It is important to understand how the rating works. It tells you how the duvet is warm and how much heat it can keep. The higher the temperature the duvet is, the more warm it is.
In the past, you'd pick a different duvet for each season and this includes 4.5 tog duvets being used in summer to avoid overheating and 13.5 tog duvets that are ideal for winter when evenings are cold. Today, you can choose one that is suitable for all seasons. This is particularly useful when sharing the bed with someone else for instance, a child or a partner. Everybody regulates their body temperatures differently.
A mid-tog duvet is best for Autumn and Spring. You'll want something that is light and quick-drying, but as the seasons change you might find that some nights are more cold than others. If this is the case, you should consider having a blanket on hand to layer under your duvet.
Some people, however, prefer natural fibre duvets. This could be made up of feathers or down, as well as synthetic fillings. Feather and down duvets are incredibly light and breathable, and possess excellent air-trapping properties making them ideal for warmer temperatures. Synthetic duvets are typically treated with anti-allergens and they help wick away water to keep you cool and comfortable. They are also easy to clean and durable.
12.5
If you are looking for a bed that will suit the summer, pick one with a lower tog rating. This is because warmer temperatures mean that you will not require as much insulation to remain cosy at night. It's also important to keep in mind that each sleeper adjusts their temperature differently, so what might feel like the perfect duvet to one person might be too warm for another.
Similarly, if you're shopping for a children's duvet, look for a lighter tog rating. This is because younger children tend to overheat more easily at night and will prefer a cooler duvet.
Some duvets have a tog rating, while others are rated by weight (often called "gsm"). This is because certain natural-filling duvets, such as down and wool, are a lot more breathable than synthetic counterparts. This can make them more effective in trapping heat without feeling too heavy or stuffy.
All-season duvets comprise two duvets in one, may also be available. This is ideal for those looking to be ready for any climate changes and also save space in their storage. It is also a great option if you are sharing a bed, as you can each have a duvet to match your individual preference for temperature. It's also handy when you have guests that visit frequently, as you'll always have a duvet available for guests.
13.5
The tog rating can be an excellent guideline for selecting the right duvet, however there are other factors that determine how comfortable it is. For instance, the type of filling has an impact on how warm or cool a duvet feels. If you tend to get cold, a warmer filling like feathers will keep you warm and warm, whereas if you're prone to hot sleepers and hot sleepers, a lighter filling can help you keep cool.
The duvet with the lowest tog for winter is 13.5 tog, which is a good middle ground that can provide warmth while still keeping you cozy and light. You can also choose 7 tog super-light summer duvet if you want to be ready for cooler evenings.
Some duvets are also classified by weight, rather than tog, which is useful if you're looking for a lighter alternative. Duvets that are made of natural materials like wool and down tend to be lighter than synthetic ones. This is due to the fact that they are lighter due to the insulation that they provide.
Children can begin sleeping on a duvet around one year old However, they shouldn't use a bed that is below 4 togs. the full details could lead to overheating or death from suffocation. It's best to start them off with a lightweight cot blanket and quilt, and gradually increase the tog rating as they grow older. There are also duvets that are 'all-seasons that can be used both in the fall and spring. This means you do not have to worry about packing away the winter or summer duvet once the season is over.
