The morphology and electrochemical properties of Ti3C2/NiCo-MOF are influenced by the mass ratio of MOF to Ti3C2. Owing to the interconnected porous structures with a high specific surface area, rapid charge transfer process, and Li+ diffusion rate, the Ti3C2/NiCo-MOF-0.4 electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 402 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 300 cycles; excellent rate performance (256 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1); and long-term stability with a capacity retention of 85.7% even after 400 cycles at a high current density, much higher than pristine Ti3C2 MXene. The results highlight that Ti3C2/NiCo-MOF have great potential in the development of high-performance energy storage devices.Plasma gelsolin (pGSN) is a highly conserved abundant circulating protein, characterized by diverse immunomodulatory activities including macrophage activation and the ability to neutralize pro-inflammatory molecules produced by the host and pathogen. Using a murine model of Gram-negative sepsis initiated by the peritoneal instillation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Xen 5, we observed a decrease in the tissue uptake of IRDye®800CW 2-deoxyglucose, an indicator of inflammation, and a decrease in bacterial growth from ascitic fluid in mice treated with intravenous recombinant human plasma gelsolin (pGSN) compared to the control vehicle. Pretreatment of the murine macrophage line RAW264.7 with pGSN, followed by addition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Xen 5, resulted in a dose-dependent increase in the proportion of macrophages with internalized bacteria. This increased uptake was less pronounced when cells were pretreated with pGSN and then centrifuged to remove unbound pGSN before addition of bacteria to macrophages. These observations suggest that recombinant plasma gelsolin can modulate the inflammatory response while at the same time augmenting host antibacterial activity.BACKGROUND Stevia serrata Cav. (Asteraceae), widely found in Guatemala, is used to treat gastrointestinal problems. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of the essential oil (EO) and the mechanism of action. METHODS EO was tested in chemical (capsaicin- and glutamate-induced licking response) or thermal (hot plate) models of nociception at 10, 30 or 100 mg/kg doses. The mechanism of action was evaluated using two receptor antagonists (naloxone, atropine) and an enzyme inhibitor (L-NAME). The anti-hyperalgesic effect was evaluated using carrageenan-induced nociception and evaluated in the hot plate. RESULTS All three doses of EO reduced licking response induced by glutamate, and higher doses reduced capsaicin-induced licking. EO also increased area under the curve, similar to the morphine-treated group. The antinociceptive effect induced by EO was reversed by pretreatment of mice with naloxone (1 mg/kg, ip), atropine (1 mg/kg, ip) or L-NAME (3 mg/kg, ip). EO also demonstrated an anti-hyperalgesic effect. The 100 mg/kg dose increased the latency time, even at 1 h after oral administration and this effect has been maintained until the 96th hour, post-administration. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that essential oil of S. serrata presents an antinociceptive effect mediated, at least in part, through activation of opioid, cholinergic and nitrergic pathways.Interactions with humans influence the behavior and physiology of other animals, and the response can vary with sex and familiarity. Dogs in animal shelters face challenging conditions and although contact with humans typically reduces stress and behaviors associated with stress, evidence indicates that shelter dogs react differently to unfamiliar men and women. Given that some aspects of canine scent-marking behavior change under fearful conditions, we examined whether sex of an unfamiliar walker would influence scent-marking behavior of 100 shelter dogs during leash walks. Male dogs urinated at higher rates when walked by unfamiliar women than when walked by unfamiliar men; female dogs urinated at similar rates when walked by unfamiliar women and unfamiliar men. We also recommend recording the sex of shelter staff present at behavioral evaluations because the results of these evaluations can impact dog welfare.We report the fabrication of stretchable sensor films (SSF) using a composite of functionalized polypyrrole- single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-silver nanowire hybrid networks embedded into a cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane elastomer. The SSF exhibited low resistivity of 30 Ω/sq and an outstanding mechanical elasticity of up to 25% (no visible change in the sheet resistance after 100 cycle at stretching-release test of 25%). These SSFs were responsive to 1 ppm ammonia gas even at a low temperature of 40 °C with 20% relative humidity and also maintained reproducibility and reversibility when repeatedly exposed to ammonia gas more than 100 times. In addition, it was confirmed that the sensor film was hardly affected even at a relative humidity range of 20% to 80%.
