The dysfunction of pericytes is related to many microvascular diseases, including hypoxia, hypertension, diabetic retinopathy, fibrosis, inflammation, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and tumor formation. For a long time, their existence and function have been neglected. The distribution, structure, biomarker, related signaling pathways as well as the roles of pericytes on vascular diseases will be introduced in this review. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Volume replacement with the latissimus dorsi (LD) is an option for patients after partial mastectomy. Although potential benefits of using the endoscopic technique have been previously described, previous studies have not assessed long term volume and aesthetic outcomes compared to traditional methods. In this study, we aim to compare the endoscopic, latissimus only harvest to the traditional latissimus with skin paddle method. METHODS Eleven patients underwent breast reconstruction with the traditional LD flap harvesting method; 9 underwent endoscopically assisted LD flap reconstruction. The difference between preoperative and >1 year postoperative volumes were recorded. Patient satisfaction and surgeon-based observer assessment of the breast aesthetic and donor site scar were compared between the two techniques. RESULTS Compared to the traditional group, there was a significant mean volume reduction in the endoscopic group (70.3 vs 21.7 cc, p = 0.0023). Operative time was also longer in the endoscopic group than in the traditional group (368 vs 257 min, p less then 0.001). PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate concomitant injuries and complications in patients with panfacial fracture (PF) according to patterns of PF. MATERIALS AND METHODS PF is defined as fractures involving at least three of the four facial parts (frontal, upper midface, lower midface, and mandible). A simple regression analysis, Cramer's V analysis, and Pearson's correlation analysis were used for verifying significance and correlation between the investigated factors and patterns of PF. PURPOSE Hospital-acquired infections in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) account for an increase in morbidity and mortality leading to serious health complications. This study aims to determine the effect of a multimodality approach including disinfection and physical separation on the infections prevailing in ICU. METHODS The study employed prospective cross-over analysis to assess the 738 individuals (560 males and 178 females) at the ICU, Aseer Central Hospital, Saudi Arabia. The intervention programs were carried out for 3 years (2013-2015). It included the application of hydrogen peroxide and silver cations, physical separation, and compartmentalization of ICU. Acinetobacter spp., E. coli, and staphylococci were isolated, identified, and used to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention program. RESULTS The results provide endotracheal tube as the main specimen type (34.7%) followed by blood (29.1%), tracheal secretion (7.7%), wound (6%), urine (5.7%), throat swab (5.4%), sputum (3.7%), and other specimens (7.
