Adolescence is a period of exploration and experimentation that includes risk behaviors such as substance use. Adolescents living in a situation of vulnerability could be more prone to using substances. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to evaluate the association between the level of vulnerability and substance use considering explanatory factors. Data were obtained from the first wave of the GenerationFRee project (http//www.generationfree.ch), a longitudinal study based on data collected yearly between 2014 and 2019 on youth aged 15-24 years in high schools and professional schools. The sample included 5179 participants. We designated four risk behaviors current tobacco smoking, alcohol misuse, cannabis use, and other illegal drug use. We defined vulnerability based on three criteria the relationship with parents, school performance, and the family socioeconomic status (SES). According to this definition, participants were divided into three groups no vulnerability, moderate vulnerability, and high vially screened for substance use by healthcare providers.Substance abuse (SA) among children is a recognized challenge for policymakers and law enforcement and has life-threatening consequences owing to the impact on the children's development and the consequent increase in vulnerability. This work outlines several important issues related to SA among children (1) SA prevalence including onset, common examples, extent, and spectrum of SA; (2) the presence of new psychoactive substances, which are rapidly spreading worldwide with limitations regarding their prevalence, detection, and interventions; (3) street children and their recruitment in drug supply; (4) SA and substance use disorder pathways, risk and protective factors for the development of SA; (5) SA consequences in the case of early initiation, including deaths; and (6) current preventive interventions for the pediatric population. In conclusion, this challenge requires consistent and unremitting attention in order to execute effective prevention programs with continuous re-evaluation of the situation.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has imposed many challenges on health systems. The purpose of this study was to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the clinical activity of pediatricians.

We conducted a cross-sectional and descriptive online survey among pediatricians practicing in Cameroon. Data were collected through an anonymous pre-tested Google Form®.

Among the 118 pediatricians eligible for the survey, 101 responded (85.6%), of whom 61.2% were women. The pediatric outpatient consultations dropped significantly from 60.4% of pediatricians seeing more than 30 patients per week before the pandemic to 9.9% during the pandemic (P<0.000). According to the occupancy rate of hospitalisation beds, 45.5% of pediatricians reported having 76-100% of pediatric hospitalisation beds occupied per week before the pandemic but no pediatrician reported a similar rate during the pandemic (P<0.000). There was a significant increase in the use of telehealth, ranging from no pediatrician using telehealth "ver' fear of being infected when leaving the house was the predominant reason likely to explain this drop in attendance at health facilities. This could constitute an axis for developing messages to parents to encourage a gradual return to child health services. The diagnosis of endogenous endophthalmitis is challenging. We report a pediatric case of endogenous endophthalmitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes angina. A previously healthy 33-month-old child presented to the emergency department with a history of fever and fatigue related to bacterial angina. On physical examination, an opalescent cornea was noticed and the diagnosis of endogenous endophthalmitis was confirmed by the pediatric ophthalmologist. Streptococcus pyogenes was found in blood culture and in the anterior chamber fluid. There was an adverse outcome with posterior vitrectomy and eye atrophy. Since endogenous endophthalmitis can lead to a poor visual outcome, urgent therapeutic management is necessary.
To better understand the nature of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in schwannomas, especially in the "target sign" of these findings, the histopathological investigation was performed.

The MRI findings were correlated with histopathological features in 22 samples of schwannomas, which were mostly resected from the extremities. The histopathological analyses included alcian blue staining and immunohistochemical staining for S-100 protein, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA).

Seven of the 22 samples of schwannomas of the extremities exhibited target signs including a peripheral zone of homogeneously high signal intensity and a central zone of heterogeneous signal intensity in T2-weighted images. Gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images demonstrated a central heterogeneous enhancement and a peripheral ring of homogeneously low signal intensity. Histopathologically, S-100 and PCNA were positive only in the central heterogeneous signal area. In contrast, EMA was only stained on the degenerative epi/perineurium in the peripheral zone.

In schwannomas of the extremities showing target sign in T2-weighted images, histopathologically, the peripheral areas were suggested to be mucinous degeneration of the epineurium or perineurium, while the central areas were composed of truly neoplastic cells.

We undertook an analysis of 184 dental abscesses that required surgical drainage, as there is surprisingly little in the literature on the subject. find more This was a retrospective study of 184 consecutive patients with dental abscesses who were admitted between January 2016 and September 2019. On admission, all patients had orthopantomograms (OPG) and baseline blood tests. Surgical drainage was performed under a general or local anaesthetic and a pus swab sent for culture and sensitivity. The submandibular space was the most commonly involved site and paediatric patients most often presented with buccal space abscesses. A lower molar tooth was the cause in 132 patients. White blood cells (WBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were both raised in 63.6% (n=117), but were normal in 4.9% (n=9). The remaining patients had either raised WBC (2.
