High-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) and HPTLC coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) methods were described for the simultaneous determination of zearalenone (ZEA); type B trichothecenes (TCT-B); nivalenol (NIV) and deoxynivalenol (DON) along with its acetylated derivatives 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-ADON) and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15-ADON). The extract samples were cleaned-up with Bond Elut Mycotoxin® solid-phase extraction cartridges. Then, separation was performed on HPTLC silica gel 60 F254 plates using toluene, ethyl acetate and formic acid (181 v/v/v) as mobile phase. Derivatisation was then performed with 10% aluminium trichloride in 50% methanol. Mycotoxin standards and spiked cereals grains were identified by UV spots at 366 nm, with retention factors (RF) of 0.20 (NIV), 0.39 (DON), 0.45 (15-ADON), 0.50 (3-ADON) and 0.60 (ZEA). Some parameters of validation were determined. Calibration data (n = 5) fitted a linear regression model with determination coefficients, R2 > 0.99. The recovery was determined in triplicate at two levels, ranging from 84.3 ± 2.2% to 114.2 ± 11.7%. Detection limits ranged from 80 to 120 μg kg-1 and quantification limits ranged from 120.0 to 200 μg kg-1. The analysis by HPTLC/electrospray (ESI)-MS in negative mode confirmed the presence of TCT-B and ZEA standards in Chilean cereals with mass signals at m/z 355, 371, 337, and 317 for DON, NIV, 3-ADON and 15-ADON, and ZEA, respectively.Evidence from nationally representative surveys conducted in sub-Saharan Africa shows that significant proportions of men in the wealthiest quintile report never having tested for HIV. Despite high prevalence rates in this quintile, no research has been conducted on the HIV testing attitudes and practices of wealthier men. This article reports findings from qualitative research conducted with 23 wealthy men in Tanzania. Whilst wealthy men reported barriers to and enablers of HIV testing previously reported by the general population, concerns around loss of social status and community standing were amplified for members of this demographic. Furthermore, HIV stigma among members of this group remains high. However, enhanced access to HIV testing through private clinics, regular healthcare appointments, health insurance schemes and the means to travel to other countries enables wealthy men to avoid stigma. In settings such as the workplace, wealthy men were able to test in public in their roles as 'leaders' to encourage others to test. Future interventions to increase testing amongst men should target settings in which these leadership roles can be taken advantage of. HIV services also need integrating into the health system to remove the need for testing and treatment to be accessed at separate clinics.Water content quantification of raw polysaccharide materials for food processing is generally performed by gravimetric analysis or titrimetric methods, which are time- and energy-consuming, non-eco-friendly and sample destructive. The present study develops and validates a new approach, based on the use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, resulting in a model of the water content of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) polysaccharides. Samples of CMC were exposed to different relative humidity conditions. Water content was determined by standard gravimetric methods (OIV-Oeno 404-2010) and compared with the area of FTIR absorption in the range 3675-2980 cm-1, attributed to the stretching of OH groups. The strong correlation between gravimetric results and FTIR area (R2 = 0.88) showed no signs of bias across the water content range. A cross-validation technique to predict the water content by band area was assessed obtaining a general equation y = 2.12 x + 2.80 with a high repetitively and good prediction of the tested models.Macrolides are critically important antimicrobials for both human and animal health and should be prioritized in risk assessments, as inappropriate use may result in antimicrobial resistance. The antimicrobials erythromycin, oleandomycin, spiramycin, tilmicosin and tylosin were analysed in infant formula samples by HPLC-MS/MS using a validated analytical method based on a modified QuEChERS extraction. The results of the occurrence study were employed to perform a dietary exposure assessment of infants to residues. Protein Tyrosine Kinase inhibitor In a total of 30 analysed samples, 73% contained spiramycin residues and 27%, tilmicosin residues. Calculated daily intakes ranged from 1.47 × 10-6 to 2.71 × 10-4 mg kg-1 body weight considering all analytes, representing 0.01-0.59% of acceptable daily intakes. The results of the dietary exposure assessment were all below acceptable daily intakes, indicating low potential health concerns. However, according to Brazilian regulations, infant formulas containing residues of one or more of the investigated analytes were deemed as non-compliant.While gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men are most affected by HIV in Cuba, infections among women have increased over time, but there has been little research to contextualise their vulnerability to HIV. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of gender and violence in shaping vulnerability to HIV among Cuban women. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with women living with HIV at an outpatient HIV clinic in Havana. Narrative and thematic technique were used to systematically analyse the data. Participants described negotiating sexual relationships in a context where traditional gender norms merge with the paradox of increasing professional opportunities for women alongside growing economic precarity. Interconnected economic and emotional dependence along with violence influenced the acceptance of certain behaviours that heightened vulnerability to HIV, including inconsistent condom use and infidelity. Gender transformative approaches that recognise the complex interplay between gender norms, economic precarity and violence are needed to address women's vulnerability to HIV in the Cuban context. Such efforts can reinforce existing strategies to promote behaviourally focused prevention while creating an enabling environment for the integration and expansion of biomedical innovation in HIV prevention.
