In Southeast Asia from 2004 to 2006, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) resulted in culling 45 million birds and jeopardizing sustainable agricultural production. HPAI is highly virulent; small-scale farms present a high-risk environment for disease transmission between animals and humans. We investigated how attitudes toward HPAI influence water-related biosecurity mitigation behaviors on small-scale farms in Vietnam using the conceptual framework Social Cognitive Theory.
We analyzed a secondary cross-sectional data set from northern (Thai Binh) and southern (An Giang) provinces in Vietnam, describing a stratified randomized selection of 600 small-scale farmers who were interviewed using questionnaires and in-person interviews. Logistic regression analysis and odds ratios were used to examine relationships between factors influencing HPAI attitudes, social norms, perceived importance, and behaviors (α = 0.10) RESULTS Concern about the severity of HPAI was significantly associated with increased peraps exist in uptake of water management practices as biosecurity for HPAI, potentially negatively affected by peer and media influence. Our results should be of interest to public health and policy authorities addressing HPAI mitigation.
Individuals with symptoms of bulimia nervosa (BN) are more likely to binge and purge on days of greater negative affect. Given that self-compassion helps individuals cope more adaptively with distress, the present study examined the contribution of daily fluctuations in self-compassion to eating disorder symptoms in women who endorse symptoms of BN. The directionality of these associations was also examined.
For 2 weeks, 124 women who met the DSM-5 criteria for BN completed nightly measures of their daily eating pathology and self-compassion.
Self-compassion levels varied almost as much within a person from day-to-day as between-persons (i.e., from one person to the next). Multilevel modeling revealed that within persons, higher daily levels of self-compassion were associated with a reduced probability of both binge eating and inappropriate compensation, and lower levels of dietary restraint and clinical impairment. Secondary analyses revealed that these variables mutually influenced one another within gms and ecological momentary assessments may shed further light on the ways in which self-compassion and eating pathology relate to one another in this population.
To assess whether maintenance variables have a differential effect on tooth loss due to periodontitis (TLP) based on staging and grading.
Patients treated for periodontitis for a minimum of ≥10years follow-up were included and categorized according to their stage and grade at baseline. Impact of number, regularity, and pattern of supportive periodontal therapy visits (SPT) on TLP was explored by dividing teeth into test (5year time periods prior to TLP events) and control groups (random 5year periods without tooth loss).
The regularity of maintenance visits, but not the overall quantity, had a significant impact on risk of TLP and showed higher importance as staging and grading increased (larger impact for stages III/IV and grade C). The minimum threshold of visits below which the risk of TLP was equivalent to that of the control group was one visit every 7.4months for stages I-II, 6.7months for stage III-IV, 7.2months for grade B and 6.7months for grade C. This frequency should be increased for former and current smokers, diabetics and elderly patients. Stage III and IV patients who skip more than 1year of maintenance in a 5year period have an increased risk of TLP (OR=2.55) compared to those only miss 1year. A similar trend was noted for grade C patients, but not for stages I/II or grades A/B.
Lack of SPT regularity and missing multiple years of maintenance had a larger influence on risk of TLP for higher-level staging and grading.
Lack of SPT regularity and missing multiple years of maintenance had a larger influence on risk of TLP for higher-level staging and grading.Segregation of cells that form the embryo from those that produce the surrounding extra-embryonic tissues is critical for early mammalian development, but the regulatory layers governing these first cell fate decisions remain poorly understood. buy Myricetin Recent work in The EMBO Journal identifies two chromatin regulators, Hdac3 and Dax1, that synergistically restrict the developmental potential of mouse embryonic stem cells and act as a lineage barrier to primitive endoderm formation.Polygonum orientale L. is a traditional Chinese medicine having extensive pharmacological activities including antimyocardial ischemia (MI) injury properties. Isoorientin, orientin, vitexin, quercitrin, astragalin and protocatechuic acid are the main compounds in P. orientale extract. The aim of this study was to establish an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of the content of these compounds in urine, feces and bile samples simultaneously and application of the method in a comparative excretion study in normal and MI model rats after oral administration of P. orientale extract. Chromatographic seperation was conducted on an Agilent Eclipse Plus C18 column with the mobile phase consisting of 0.1% formic acid-acetonitrile and 0.1% formic acid-water. Negative ion multiple reaction monitoring mode was used for quantification. The six compounds had good linearity (r ≥ 0.9921) and acceptable accuracy ranging from 10.10 to -5.82% The relative standard deviations of within-day precision and inter-day precision were less then 10.45 and 13.44%, respectively. The extraction recovery of the six analytes ranged from 80.31 to 101.47% and the matrix effect was 82.56-102.88%, indicating that the preparations of sample collected form urine, feces and bile were stable throughout analysis. The excretion amount of the six analytes increased in both normal and MI model rats' urine, feces and bile in a 24 h period and became stable between 36 and 48 h after administration. The total excretion rate of six compounds was less then 5% in urine, feces and bile of normal and MI model rats. The excretion peak period for all compounds in MI rats was slower than that in normal rats. This excretion study provides insights for further application and research on P. orientale.
