Results The morphometric characters in the RAW and AWIDH showed that length of immature proglottid, length of mature proglottid, length of suckers are larger in RAW than AWIDH worms with statistical difference. Characters in E. granulosus of RAW and AWIDH showed that total number of segments, number of mature segments and the total number of testes were greater in RAW than AWIDH worms; while only the number of mature segments was statistically different is two groups. Conclusion Application of DIC/Nomarski and phase contrast microscopy together with morphometric criteria are useful means for comparing the developmental aspects of in vitro and in vivo reared adults of E. granulosus. Kenya is one of the high endemic countries of CE with the endemic areas in the country being under immense occupation of traditional pastoralists. Turkana area in Kenya, has in the past recorded the highest prevalence of CE in the world. Methods The keywords cystic echinococcosis; Prevalence; Diagnosis; Risk-factors; Kenya were searched on google scholar and PubMed and the important literature materials retrieved for further analysis. Results The most notable infection risk factor for this disease in the country is the close association between man, dogs, and livestock. Successful control of CE in Kenya requires application of innovative interventions achieved after the review of the disease situation in the country. With the emergence and advent of new diagnostic techniques, CE organ-specific infections and transmission pattern in Kenya differ from what is commonly reported in literature. Conclusion A better understanding of CE prevalence of different hosts, its transmission pattern and the pathogenicity might make it possible to set up more effective control programs in future. Copyright© Iranian Society of Parasitology & Tehran University of Medical Sciences.Background Viral myocarditis (VMC) is a type of cardiac inflammation that is generally caused by coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infection. Several MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known to play crucial roles in VMC pathogenesis. MiR-15 is reportedly associated with myocardial injury, inflammatory responses and viral infection. Whether miR-15 affects the occurrence and development of VMC remains largely unknown. The roles of miR-15 and their underlying mechanisms in CVB3-stimulated H9c2 cells were assessed in this study. Methods We infected H9c2 cells with CVB3 to establish a VMC cellular model. We then determined the effects of miR-15 inhibition on three cardiomyocyte injury markers lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and cardiac troponin-I (cTn-I). The impact on CVB3-induced cell apoptosis and pro-inflammatory cytokines was also investigated. The effects of miR-15 inhibition on NLRP3 inflammasome activation were also assessed. The target relationship between miR-15 and NOD-like receptor X1 (NLRX1) was determined using a luciferase reporter assay. Results MiR-15 expression was significantly upregulated in H9c2 cells after CVB3 infection. Inhibition of miR-15 significantly decreased the CVB3-induced levels of LDH, CK-MB and cTn-I. It also elevated cell viability, reduced CVB3-induced cell apoptosis and decreased the generation of the interleukins IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-18. Furthermore, we determined that miR-15 inhibition suppressed NLRP3 inflammasome activation by downregulating NLRP3 and caspase-1 p20 expression. We found a direct target relationship between miR-15 and NLRX1. Additionally, inhibition of NLRX1 reversed the protective effects of miR-15 inhibition against CVB3-induced myocardial cell injury by regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome. Conclusion Our results indicate that miR-15 inhibition alleviates CVB3-induced myocardial inflammation and cell injury. This may be partially due to NLRX1-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome inactivation. © The Author(s) 2020.Background Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for the first six months after birth has been recommended by the WHO as the best infant feeding strategy. Data on EBF rates among twin infants in Ghana remain limited and for that matter hypothesized to be low. Aim The study sought to measure the prevalence of EBF and identify associated factors among twins in the Tamale metropolis. Methods A cross-sectional survey involving 185 mother-twin pairs was conducted in four health facilities in the Tamale metropolis providing Child welfare Clinic (CWC) services. Socio-demographics data on both mother and twin were taken. Biomedical (e.g. perceived onset of lactation, confidence of producing enough milk, parity, delivery place, delivery type, time of breastfeeding initiation) and bio cultural factors (e.g. family cooperation for current infant feeding, breastfeeding counselling) were also obtained. In-depth interviews were also conducted with a sub sample of mothers (30) who were purposively selected to generate qualitative drs of their abilities to produce enough breast milk to satisfy their children, healthcare professionals should pay more attention on providing appropriate information on breastfeeding to mothers and caregivers. read more Copyright © 2020 Rafatu Tahiru et al.Surgical site infection is a relatively common and devastating complication following pediatric orthopedic surgery. Many infections have been determined to be the result of settled airborne particles on surgical equipment and the sterile field. Fiberglass casts are commonly used orthopedic fixation devices before and after surgery; however, fiberglass casting material is expelled during the removal process and represents an uninvestigated area for the possibility of cast saw dust as a source of airborne bacterial contamination in an operating room setting. This study evaluates the prevalence and distribution of microbiota on 90 pediatric casts by collecting and culturing fiberglass cast material from 90 pediatric casts. Bacterial identification was performed using a Bruker Biotyper Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry device. 81 out of 90 casts (90%) showed evidence of microbial contamination. Isolated species were very diverse and ranged from normal skin flora to opportunistic pathogens.
