C57BL/6 mice intradermally inoculated with 101 colony-forming units of NVF1 or KU-1 died within 9 days, with a median time to death of 7.5 and 7 days, respectively. Both NVF1 and KU-1 strains passaged on ECA 10 times had comparable virulence prior to passaging, whereas strains passaged on ECA 20 times and on CDMA 50 times were attenuated. Attenuated strains had decreased viability in 0.01% H2O2 and lower intracellular growth rates, suggesting both properties are important for F. tularensis virulence. Additionally, passage on ECA of the KU-1 strains altered lipopolysaccharide antigenicity and bacterial susceptibility to β-lactam antibiotics. Our data demonstrate F. tularensis strain virulence in Japan and contribute to understanding phenotypic differences between natural and laboratory environments.Chunky graphite appears easily in heavy-section spheroidal graphite cast irons and is known to affect their mechanical properties. A dedicated experiment has been developed to study the effect of the most important chemical variables reported to change the amount of chunky graphite, namely the content in silicon and in rare earths. Quite unexpectedly, controlled rare earths contents appear beneficial for decreasing chunky graphite when using standard charge materials. Tin is shown to decrease chunky graphite appearance and it is evidenced that this effect is not related to rare earths. Finally, the effect of tin and antimony are compared and it is noticed that both suppress chunky graphite but also lead to some spiky graphite when no rare earth is added. Chunky graphite negatively affects the room temperature mechanical properties, though much more in the case of low silicon spheroidal graphite cast irons than in high silicon ones. Spiky graphite has been found to be much more detrimental and should thus be avoided.Severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria remains the primary cause of mortality in several African countries, including Angola, where severe malaria patient admission into intensive care units (ICU) is mandatory. The present observational and prospective study enrolled 101 consecutive severe malaria patients admitted at the ICU of Américo Boavida University Hospital (Luanda, Angola). Malaria was confirmed by microscopy and RDT, and WHO criteria were used to define severe malaria. The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score was used to monitor organ dysfunctions. Surviving and nonsurviving patients were compared using bivariate statistical methods. Two-step cluster analysis was used to find discriminant organ dysfunctions that may correlate better with the observed mortality (16.8%), which was much lower than the one generated by the SOFA score. The study population was young, and 87% of the patients were local native residents. There was no statistically significant correlation between the parasitemia and the outcome. Hematological and cerebral dysfunctions were prevalent but were not discriminant when cluster analyses were performed to detect homogeneous subgroups of patients. In conclusion, the SOFA score was readily applicable and efficient in monitoring daily organ dysfunction but was not effective enough in predicting the outcome of severe malaria patients.The use of metallic nanoparticles in engineering and biomedicine disciplines has gained considerable attention. This limitation of chemically synthesized nanoparticles has engendered the exploration for the ecofriendly synthesis process. Biological or green synthesis approaches have emerged as an effective solution to address the limitations of conventionally synthesized nanoparticles. Nanoparticles synthesized via biological entities obtained from plant extracts exhibit superior effect in comparison to chemical methods. Recently, conifer extracts have been found to be effective in synthesizing metallic nanoparticles through a highly regulated process. The current review highlights the importance of conifers and its extracts in synthesis of metallic nanoparticles. It also discusses the different applications of the conifer extract mediated metallic nanoparticles.This paper aimed to propose the fabrication of light, Al/Mg/Al multilayered composite. Initially prepared three-layered feedstock was subjected to deformation during four rolling cycles (passes) using the conventional and modified accumulative roll bonding (ARB) processes at 400 °C, thanks to which 24-layered composite materials were produced. The modification of the ARB process was based on the application of the rotational speed asymmetry (asymmetric accumulative roll bonding, AARB). It was adopted that the initial thickness of the composite stack amounted to 3 mm (1 mm for each composite). The rolling was done in the laboratory duo D150 rolling mill with the application of the roll rotational speed asymmetry and symmetry av = 1.0 (ARB) and av = 1.25 and 1.5 (AARB). In this manuscript, it was proved that introducing the asymmetry into the ARB process for the tested Al/Mg/Al composite has an impact on the activation of additional shear bands, which results in higher fragmentation of the structure in comparison to the symmetrical process.
