In Australia and New Zealand, most patients who underwent rectal cancer resections with the formation of an anastomosis received a defunctioning stoma. A defunctioning stoma does not prevent AL from occurring but is mostly associated with a lower reoperation rate. Several studies have shown that the MV composition and physicochemical properties vary according to the bacterial growth stage, but the impact this might have on the externalization of RNA via MVs has not been addressed. Therefore, a study to characterize the RNA content from MVs retrieved at different growth phases was conducted. First, the transcriptome analyses revealed a higher abundance of around 300 RNA species in MVs when compared with the cells. The vesiculation rate along the growth curve was determined, showing that the release of MVs increased during the transition to the stationary phase, whereas it decreased in the late stationary phase. RNA-seq of MVs retrieved along the transition to the stationary phase demonstrated that the RNA cargo of vesicles did not vary. However, the amount of smaller RNAs ( less then 200 nt) inside MVs retrieved in the late exponential phase was higher than in the stationary phase MVs. These results indicate that the externalization of RNA via MVs occurs during late exponential phase and implies the secretion of different types of MVs during growth.
We investigated association between sociodemographic characteristics and COVID-19 disease among pregnant women admitted to our unit, the largest high-risk maternity unit in the Milan metropolitan area.
Between March 1, 2020 and April 30, 2020, 896 pregnant women were admitted to our Institution and tested for COVID-19. We collected information regarding their sociodemographic characteristics. Additional information on geographical area of residence, number of family members, number of family members tested positive for COVID-19, and clinical data was collected for women tested positive for COVID-19. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of developing COVID-19 according to sociodemographic characteristics were estimated by unconditional logistic regression models.
Among the 896 women enrolled, 50 resulted positive for COVID-19. Pregnant women aged ≥35 years had a significantly lower risk of developing the infection (crude OR = 0.29; 95% CI0.16-0.55). The ability to cope with the stress of migration and adaptation to a new culture likely is an important protective factor for optimal identity development under these conditions. The present study examined the role of coping strategies in interpersonal identity development among immigrant adolescents. The sample consisted of 93 (43% females) first-generation immigrant adolescents who migrated to Turkey due to war in their home countries. They have been living in the suburbs in Ankara and attending regular public schools. A two-wave longitudinal design was employed with a 4-month interval between waves. Identity development was measured using the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale focusing on the dimensions commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration of commitment in the domain of interpersonal relations. The coping strategies problem-solving, social support seeking, and avoidance were assessed with the Coping Strategies Scale. Results showed that none of the identity dimensions significantly predicted the use of specific coping strategies. However, different coping strategies predicted relative change in some identity dimensions. These results are discussed in light of previous findings on associations between identity development and coping strategies in different populations, and the difficulties associated with being an immigrant.
Due to COVID-19, diagnostic delays and a surge of advanced head and neck cancer (HNC) is anticipated. We hereby evaluate patient and tumor characteristics before and during the early COVID-19 period.
Retrospective review of patients with HNC presented at a multidisciplinary tumor conference from May 14, 2020 to June 18, 2020 was performed and compared to a similar 6-week period a year before. Demographics, time to diagnosis, and tumor characteristics were analyzed.
There was a 25% reduction in newly diagnosed malignancies. Groups were similar in baseline characteristics, duration of symptoms, and time to diagnosis. However, median primary tumor size was significantly larger (p = 0.042) and T stage more advanced for mucosal subsites (p = 0.025) in the COVID-19 group.
Our findings suggest increased tumor burden in patients with HNC presenting during the pandemic, despite a similar time to diagnosis. This may become more pronounced as the pandemic duration is extended.

However, investigation of TALEs from Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, which causes black rot disease of crucifers, received little attention. Computational prediction in conjunction with quantitative reverse transcription PCR analysis was used to find their targets in the Brassica oleracea genome. Transcription factor ERF121, from the AP2/ERF family, was identified as target gene for the conserved TALEs from multiple X. campestris pv. campestris strains. Several members of this family from diverse plants were previously identified as targets of TALEs from different Xanthomonas species. We propose that TALE-dependent activation of AP2/ERF transcription factors promotes susceptibility to Xanthomonas through the misregulation of plant defence pathways.
