The protective role of microRNA (miR)-135b in cerebral neurons has been previously identified. However, to the best of our knowledge, the involvement of miR-135b in acute ischemic stroke has yet to be elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the expression profile of miR-135b in peripheral blood obtained from patients with acute ischemic stroke. A total of 76 patients with acute ischemic stroke were selected as the case group, which included 33 cases of aorta atheromatous plague, 19 cases of cardioembolism, 16 cases of small arterial occlusion and 8 cases with unknown causes. In addition, 60 healthy subjects were selected as the control group. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR was used to measure the expression of miR-135b in the peripheral blood of the patients. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score was used to evaluate the severity of acute ischemic stroke. Copyright © Yang et al.The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of 540 nm-wavelength intense pulsed light (IPL) for the treatment of telangiectasia in late-stage rosacea. Between July 2013 and January 2016, patients with rosacea who tested positive for Demodex folliculorum were recruited. Patients received anti-mite therapy and were then randomly apportioned to receive either three 540 nm-IPL treatments at 4-week intervals (IPL group), or no treatment (control group). Telangiectasia was assessed by the same clinician at baseline and at follow-up intervals over 2 years, where ≥90% clearance of telangiectasia was considered to indicate effective treatment. The rates of effective treatment, improvement (≥30% clearance) and recurrence (original or neo-location) were compared in both groups. After 33 patients were lost during follow-up, the IPL and control groups were comprised of 107 and 120 patients for the final analysis, respectively. The rates of effective treatment and total efficacy in the IPL group (66.36 and 95.33%, respectively) were found to be significantly higher compared with those of the control group (0 and 30.83%, respectively). By contrast, the rates of recurrence were found to be lower in the IPL group (8.41%) compared with the control group (48.33%). Redness-to-blisters associated with IPL treatment (9.7% of analyzed patients) subsided within one week and hyperpigmentation (1.9%) within 3 months. To conclude, treatment with 540 nm-IPL improved facial telangiectasia in late-stage rosacea that remained after sequential anti-mite therapy and effectively reduced the recurrence of rosacea. Copyright © Luo et al.Effects of Conbercept combined with retinal photocoagulation on macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) were investigated. A total of 98 patients (98 eyes) with macular edema secondary to BRVO were collected. The central macular thickness (CMT), incidence rate of complications after treatment and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were recorded. Also the factors affecting visual recovery of patients were analyzed. At 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after treatment, the BCVA in both groups was significantly superior to that before treatment (P less then 0.05). In the combination group and laser group, the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) of BCVA increased from 0.84±0.47 to 0.34±0.10 and from 0.89±0.49 to 0.45±0.14, and CMT declined from 559.5±152.7 to 267.8±19.8 µm and from 570.3±172.6 to 314.7±18.4 µm. It was observed that at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after treatment, the BCVA in combination group was obviously better than that in laser group (P=0.008, P less then 0.001, P=0.004, P less then 0.001, respectively), while CMT in combination group was obviously smaller than that in laser group (P=0.009, P=0.002, P less then 0.001, P less then 0.001). Etomoxir nmr Conbercept with retinal photocoagulation can effectively improve the visual acuity and reduce the CMT. The visual recovery of patients after treatment is related to the BCVA before treatment, decreased value of CMT at 1 month after treatment and integrity of external limiting membrane (ELM). Copyright © Wang et al.Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that the abnormal expression of microRNA (miRNA/miR) serves a crucial role in the development of numerous types of human cancer, including neuroblastoma (NB). The present study aimed to investigate the expression levels and biological roles of miR-146b in NB. miR-146b expression levels in NB cell lines and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were analyzed using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, and the regulatory effects of miR-146b on NB cell proliferation, invasion and apoptosis in vitro were investigated using CCK-8 assay, transwell invasion assay and flow cytometry. In addition, bioinformatics analysis, western blotting and dual-luciferase reporter assays were used to determine whether NUMB was a target gene of miR-146b. miR-146b expression levels were increased in NB cell lines compared with HUVECs. The knockdown of miR-146b using a miR-146b inhibitor significantly inhibited NB cell proliferation and invasion, but promoted cell apoptosis in vitro. Furthermore, it was revealed that miR-146b promoted NB cell proliferation through targeting NUMB. In conclusion, miR-146b was suggested to serve as an oncogene, at least in part, through directly targeting NUMB, which indicated that miR-146b may be a potential therapeutic target for NB treatment. Copyright © Ma et al.The present study investigated the protective effects of emodin on intestinal epithelial tight junction (TJ) barrier integrity in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced septic rats and its possible mechanisms of action. Healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups (n=20 per group) Sham group, CLP group and CLP + emodin group. Animals were sacrificed at 12 and 24 h after the model was established. Abdominal aortic blood and specimens of the ileum were harvested for analysis. The histopathological changes in intestinal mucosa and the ultrastructures of intestinal epithelial cells were investigated using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The integrity of the intestinal barrier was assessed by examining plasma diamine oxidase (DAO) levels and the ratio of urine lactulose to mannitol (L/M). The levels of the intestinal TJ proteins claudin-3, zonula occludens (ZO)-1 and occludin were detected using immunohistochemistry, western blotting and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR.
