UPVC Door Hinge Repair
Adjusting the hinges is a straightforward solution to misaligned upvc doors issues. First find the adjustment screw on the door's side of the hinge. It will be on the top or the bottom of the hinge. It can be turned clockwise to raise it or anti-clockwise to lower.
Butt Hinges
Hinges are crucial to the security and functionality of a door. However should they become rusty, or become worn and break, they may fail. This makes it difficult or impossible to open doors. There are a variety of hinges, and they can be repaired or changed easily. When you're fixing a small issue or replacing the entire hinge, it is crucial to take the time to complete the task correctly.
Full mortise half surface, full mortise and concealed hinges come in a variety to accommodate various door heights, widths, thicknesses and operating frequencies. They are available in two knuckle three knuckle, five knuckle and swing clear styles. There are also special designs for electrical security and non-removable pin (NRP) and heavy-duty hinges.
A lubricated hinge is easier to use and reduces the amount of friction caused by repeated use. It is possible to lubricate hinges using liquid or dry lubricants, like cooking oils petroleum jelly or paraffin wax. Apply a thin layer of lubricant on the hinge barrel and let it soak for at minimum 15 minutes.
If your hinges are stuck or rusty it is possible to clean and remove the pin from the barrel. Once you've done this you can clean the barrel of your hinge using a wire brush and a small amount of oil that penetrates, like Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster. Reinstall the hinge after cleaning the barrel. Test it to make sure the pin fits correctly.
One common cause of loose hinges is the stripping of screw holes. These holes are often damaged and make it difficult to tighten the screws. To repair the screws with stripped holes you can drill a wooden dowel in the hole you have stripped, after sawing it into pieces of 1 inch. Spread the carpenter's adhesive on the dowel, and then tap it into place using a Hammer.
Another common cause of a loose hinge is worn hinge pins. The best method to repair a damaged hinge is to replace the hinge pin. Hardware stores and online stores are both places to purchase new hinge pins. Install the new hinge pin by taking the original pin off and replacing it with a new one.
Rebated Hinges
Rebated hinges are a popular option for doors that will be installed inside frames constructed around them. The hinges are positioned within the frame to ensure that they do not overlap the door sash while they are open. They are then fixed onto the edge of the door. These hinges are suitable for uPVC or timber as well as aluminum doors and are available in a variety of sizes to suit different door sash widths.
These hinges provide the door with more adjustment than traditional butts can offer. They also make ideal for doors with chamfers that don't allow the use traditional butts. They are supplied with a dust cap made from metal and are adjustable in three planes. They can hold up to 60kg for each pair. They are simple to install and are suitable for either right or left hand doors RH/LH.
Spraying an aerosol of silicone or lithium grease on your rebated door hinges will solve the issue quickly and easily. This will stop the squeaking for a while but it isn't a permanent solution and may wear off over time.
Drill out the screw holes and then fill them in with wood filler. This will keep the screws tight and provide you with a solid grip on the door. You can also use toothpicks to fill the holes and make them stronger.
Another option is to use a wooden dowel that is similar to the size of the existing screw hole. Drill a hole large enough to accommodate the dowel. Glue the dowel in and then chisel it flush when it is set. The hinge can be re-screwed.
I have a few doors that have had their hinge recesses cut too deep and splinted. They are quite heavy frames that are embedded in the wall of an old building so replacement isn't really an alternative. Would it be possible to cut out the section of frame and splice in a new block of wood, into which a new hinge recess could be made that will better hold screws for the hinges? This would be a good option, and what kind of wood would you suggest for this kind of repair?
Flag Hinges
UPVC hinges can be used to upgrade or replace hinges currently in use. Many modern uPVC doors have slimline hinges that can be adjusted. They are much easier to shut and open, and more heat resistant. They are also easier to maintain than hinges that are older and less likely to draught or rattle. Like all hinges they wear out over time and require adjusting.
If your uPVC door won't shut properly it could be because the door's frame isn't at an appropriate level. If this is the case, you'll need to correct it before you adjust the hinges. Otherwise, the latch won't catch onto the strike plate and will not close the door.
You can adjust a butt-type hinge by loosening the grub screw located in the middle of the hinge (face-on). You can then turn the top or bottom adjustment screws to get sideways movement. To access a compression screw on the top of the device, you will have to take off the cap. The screw adjusts the height of the hinge with a tolerance of up to 2 millimeters.
Flag hinges are more versatile than butt hinges and are able to be adjusted both vertically and lateraly. They are also less susceptible to draughts than the butt hinges as they have a lip on the hinge. These hinges are used on a few older uPVC doors and can be easily replaced with modern T-hinges.
Repairing hinges that are flagged by using wood glue or wood filler to fill in any gaps within the hinge. After the filler has dried, sand it smooth and paint the hinge. Contact a hardware store for advice if you are not sure of the kind of filler you should use. You can also use fillers with a higher gloss to give your door a polished look. Alternatively, you can also use wood veneer to cover the gap in the door. This option is somewhat more expensive however it will make your door look brand new.
Recess Hinges
Cut a shallow recess in the door frame with a chisel to match the size hinge you are installing. Once you've completed the cut, scrape away the wood you've just removed and then clean the area with a damp, clean cloth to ensure that the new hinge will be perfectly against the frame's surface.
After you've cleaned the area, put in the new hinges, and then test to see how the door works. Make sure that the sash is in line with the frame at both the top and bottom and doesn't have any gaps or get caught on the hinge at any point because this could mean that your uPVC door is out of alignment and needs to be readjusted.
You can purchase a spirit level at the majority of hardware stores for reasonable prices. Place the level on the top of the door. If there are any differences in height, the hinges need to be adjusted.
uPVC hinges can be adjusted with an Allen Key that is located on the door side of the hinge. Turn it clockwise to tighten or counter-clockwise for loosening (lower). Repeat this procedure until the door opens and shuts without creaking noises.
