The formation process of the algae-bacteria symbiotic system (ABSS) was analyzed, and the formation adsorption conditions were optimized. The role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), specific surface area and zeta potential in adsorption mechanisms were assessed and proposed. The results showed the dry weight of the ABSS and adsorption efficiency of microalgae reached the highest under the conditions of 25 °C, pH 6.0, 160 rpm and CaCl2 2.0 mg/mL. The process of the ABSS formation could be mainly divided into the fast stage and slow stage. The roles of EPS, specific surface area and zeta potential accounted for 84.22%, 5.17% and 10.61% of the adsorption capacity, respectively. EPS dominated the formation of the ABSS. The results indicated that mycelial pellets were biosorption materials and had the characteristics of chemical materials.Ionizing and non-ionizing radiations are part of our daily life, and when organisms are exposed to them for a long time, they may experience their lethal or sublethal effects. For this reason, technologies have been created to quantify them. In this study, Internet of Things (IoT) was used through connecting gamma meters and a low-cost UV radiation device. The validation of this structure was performed with meters calibrated in certified laboratories. The validation results matched those obtained by the other devices, with an error of 2%.
The incidence of heart failure among pregnant women with pre-existing cardiac disease is quoted as 13%, with 10% requiring hospitalization. There is limited literature on heart failure in the pregnant population. The study objective was to describe the etiology and management of women hospitalized in our institution for heart failure during pregnancy.
A retrospective cohort study investigated women who presented with heart failure in pregnancy between 2004 and 2017. Hospital records were interrogated using International Classification of Diseases v10 codes for heart failure. Patient characteristics, investigations, treatment, obstetric and anesthetic management, and maternal-fetal outcome data were collected and summarized using descriptive statistics.
One-hundred-and-twenty cases (in 93 122 deliveries) were identified across the 13-year period (antepartum heart failure 51%, postpartum heart failure 49%).The most common etiologies were pre-eclampsia (28%), cardiomyopathy (22%), and valvular heart diseasry and regional anesthesia used in the majority. The postpartum period warrants heightened attention for these patients.Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health disorder worldwide, with a lifetime prevalence of 5-7 % of the human population. Although the etiology of anxiety disorders is incompletely understood, one aspect of host health that affects anxiety disorders is the gut-brain axis. Adolescence is a key developmental window in which stress and anxiety disorders are a major health concern. We used adolescent female mice in a gastrointestinal (GI) colonization model to demonstrate that the commensal fungus Candida albicans affects host health via the gut-brain axis. In mice, bacterial members of the gut microbiota can influence the host gut-brain axis, affecting anxiety-like behavior and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis which produces the stress hormone corticosterone (CORT). Here we showed that mice colonized with C. albicans demonstrated increased anxiety-like behavior and increased basal production of CORT as well as dysregulation of CORT production following acute stress. The HPA axis and anxiety-like behavior are negatively regulated by the endocannabinoid N-arachidonoylethanolamide (AEA). We demonstrated that C. albicans-colonized mice exhibited changes in the endocannabinoidome. Further, increasing AEA levels using the well-characterized fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor URB597 was sufficient to reverse both neuroendocrine phenotypes in C. albicans-colonized mice. Thus, a commensal fungus that is a common colonizer of humans had widespread effects on the physiology of its host. To our knowledge, this is the first report of microbial manipulation of the endocannabinoid (eCB) system that resulted in neuroendocrine changes contributing to anxiety-like behavior.Chronic stress detrimentally affects cognition but evidence from population-based studies is scarce and largely based on one-dimensional stress assessments. In this study, we aimed to investigate associations of subjective and psychological chronic stress measures with cognition in a population-based sample of adults aged 30-95 years from the Rhineland Study. Participants completed the Perceived Stress Scale (subjective measure) and a cognitive test battery (N = 1766). Hair cortisol concentration (physiological measure) was assessed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in 1098 participants. Cross-sectional associations between the two measures of chronic stress and cognition were investigated using multivariable linear regression models. Subjective and physiological measures of chronic stress were not associated with each other (B = 0.005 [95 %CI = -0.005 - 0.015]). Participants with higher perceived stress and specifically lower perceived self-efficacy performed worse in all cognitive domains (effect sizes ranged from β = -0.129 [95 %CI = -0.177 - -0.080] to -0.054 [95 %CI = -0.099 - -0.009]; and from β = 0.052 [95 %CI = 0.005 - 0.098] to 0.120 [95 %CI = 0.072 - 0.167], respectively). Relationships between subjective chronic stress measures and executive functioning were stronger in men compared to women (interaction β = -0.144 [95 %CI = -0.221 - -0.067]). Relationships between perceived stress and working memory, and between perceived self-efficacy and executive functioning, processing speed, verbal episodic and working memory, increased with older age. Hair cortisol concentration was not associated with performance in any cognitive domain. Our results suggest that subjective and physiological measures capture different aspects of chronic stress in the general population.Number line estimation (NLE) is an educational task in which children estimate the location of a value (e.g., 25) on a blank line that represents a numerical range (e.g., 0-100). NLE performance is a strong predictor of success in mathematics, and error patterns on this task help provide a glimpse into how children may represent number internally. However, a missing and fundamental element of this puzzle is the identification of neural correlates of NLE in children. That is, understanding possible neural signatures related to NLE performance will provide valuable insight into the cognitive processes that underlie children's development of NLE ability. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we provide the first investigation of concurrent behavioral and cortical signatures of NLE performance in children. Specifically, our results highlight significant fronto-parietal changes in cortical activation in response to increases in NLE scale (e.g., 0-100 vs. Tanespimycin datasheet 0-100,000). Furthermore, our results demonstrate that NLE performance feedback (auditory, visual, or audiovisual), as well as children's grade (2nd vs.
