To examine the hand hygiene beliefs and practices of Turkish nursing students and the effectiveness of their handwashing.
Handwashing is the most important part of preventing cross-infection, but there is a considerable amount of evidence that shows that the handwashing technique of nurses and nursing students is not always very effective.
This research was carried out in two stages and is type of descriptive, analytical and observational. The study comprised 563 students from a Faculty of Nursing. Besides evaluating the nursing students' sociodemographic data, we assessed their beliefs and hand hygiene practices using a Hand Hygiene Beliefs Scale (HHBS) and Hand Hygiene Practices Inventory (HHPI) and also used with "Derma LiteCheck" device to assess how effectively they washed their hands. The STROBE checklist was used.
The handwashing frequency of the female students was significantly higher. The scores on both the HHBS and the HHPI were significantly higher among the female students compared to the males. The dirtiest areas of the hand were determined as nails (nail beds, beneath the nails), skin between the fingers and fingertips.
The results of our study indicate that although student nurses have positive perceptions about hand hygiene and appear to have developed good habits, the effectiveness of their handwashing is poor.
It is of great importance that UV light and florescent gel are made readily available both at nursing schools and in hospitals and other health institutions since these elements are useful in providing immediate visual feedback for a full assessment of handwashing behaviour.

In this study we aim to compare the evolution of motor function (MF) from mid-gestation to 12 months of life between prenatally and postnatally repaired neural tube defect (NTD) cases.
Retrospective cohort study of 127 patients who underwent prenatal (51 fetoscopic and 42 open) or postnatal (34 cases) NTD repair. Anatomical level of lesion (LL) was defined as the upper bony spinal defect at initial sonographic evaluation. Prenatal MF of the lower extremities was evaluated by ultrasound (US) following a metameric distribution based on Carreras et al.'s methodology. MF was scored at the time of diagnosis (MF1), at 6 weeks postoperatively in prenatally repaired cases or at 6 weeks after initial evaluation in postnatally repaired cases (MF2), and at last US before delivery (MF3). At birth and 12 months of life, MF was assessed by a detailed neurological examination. First sacral (S1) MF was considered as an intact MF. For statistical comparisons, we attributed numerical scores to each neurological level and M by fetal MF assessment can have an important role for patient counseling and for case selection for surgery. read more This article is protected by copyright. Postnatally repaired cases showed worse MF at birth, and at 12 months when compared to MF at midgestation. Fetal MF assessment is an adequate tool to identify those infants who should have a good clinical MF after delivery. Based on the results provided by this study, information obtained by fetal MF assessment can have an important role for patient counseling and for case selection for surgery. Pre-operative airway evaluation is essential to decrease the proportion of possible mortality and morbidity due to difficult airway (DA). The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of pre-operative ultrasonographic airway assessment (UAA) and indirect laryngoscopy (IL) in predicting DA.
Prospective obsevational study.
Preoperative clinical examination (body mass index [BMI], mallampati classification [MP], thyromental distance, sternomental distance, neck circumference), UAA (epiglottis-skin distance [ESD], hyoid bone-skin distance [HSD], the thickness of tongue root [ToTR], anterior commissure-skin distance [ACSD]) and IL with the rigid 70-degree laryngoscope were performed to predict DA (Cormack-Lehane grade 3 and 4). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PP), and negative predictive values of the parameters were assessed.
Twenty-two of 140 (15.7%) patients were diagnosed with DA. The cut-off points of ESD, HSD, ToTR, ACSD, and BMI were 2.09 cm, 0.835 cm, 4.05 cm, 0.545 cm, and 27.10, respectively. AUC values were 0.874, 0.885, 0.871, 0.658, and 0.751 in the same order. AUC values for IL and MP were 0.773 and 0.925, respectively. MP and HSD had the best sensitivity (91%), IL grading had the best specificity (100%), and PP (100%) value among all measurements. The best-balanced sensitivity (91%), specificity (97%), and PP (88%) values were obtained by combining the IL with MP and ESD or with MP and HSD.
Ultrasonographic measurements and IL were found significantly correlated to predict DA. Combined parameters, the IL with MP and ESD or with MP and HSD, are the best parameters in predicting the DA.
4 Laryngoscope, 131E555-E560, 2021.
4 Laryngoscope, 131E555-E560, 2021.Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is a highly conserved protein of innate immunity, responsible for the regulation and maintenance of homeostasis, as well as immune recognition of external and internal ligands. TLR4 is expressed on a variety of cell types throughout the gastrointestinal tract, including on epithelial and immune cell populations. In a healthy state, epithelial cell expression of TLR4 greatly assists in homeostasis by shaping the host microbiome, promoting immunoglobulin A production, and regulating follicle-associated epithelium permeability. In contrast, immune cell expression of TLR4 in healthy states is primarily centred on the maturation of dendritic cells in response to stimuli, as well as adequately priming the adaptive immune system to fight infection and promote immune memory. Hence, in a healthy state, there is a clear distinction in the site-specific roles of TLR4 expression. Similarly, recent research has indicated the importance of site-specific TLR4 expression in inflammation and disease, particularly the impact of epithelial-specific TLR4 on disease progression.
