The validity and potential of our approach were illustrated using a case study of estimating central aortic BP waveform from two noninvasively acquired peripheral arterial pulse waveforms. The UIO could reduce the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) associated with the central aortic BP by up to 27.5% and 28.8% against conventional inverse filtering (IF) and peripheral arterial pulse scaling techniques.Traditional approaches to design and optimization of a new system often use a system-centric objective that does not consider how the operator will use this new system alongside other existing systems. When the new system design is incorporated into the broader group of systems, the performance of the operator-level objective can be sub-optimal due to the unmodeled interaction between the new system and the other systems. Among the few available references that describe attempts to address this disconnect, most follow an MDO-motivated sequential decomposition approach of first designing an optimal system and then providing this system to the operator who decides the best way to use this new system along with the existing systems. This paper addresses this issue by including aircraft design, airline operations, and revenue management "subspaces"; and presents an approach that could simultaneously solve these subspaces posed as a monolithic optimization problem. The monolithic approach makes the problem an expensive MINLP problem and is extremely difficult to solve. We use a recently developed optimization framework that simultaneously solves the subspaces to capture the "synergy" in the problem. The results demonstrate that simultaneously optimizing the subspaces leads to significant improvement in the fleet-level objective of the airline when compared to the previously developed sequential subspace decomposition approach. The results also showcase that maximizing revenue and minimizing operating cost independently need not lead to a maximized profit solution for the airline.Birds provide ecosystem services (pest control) in many agroecosystems and have neutral or negative ecological effects (disservices) in others. Large-scale, conventional row crop agriculture is extremely widespread globally, yet few studies of bird effects take place in these agroecosystems. We studied indirect effects of insectivorous birds on corn and soybean crops in fields adjacent to a prairie in Illinois (USA). We hypothesized that prairie birds would forage for arthropods in adjacent crop fields and that the magnitude of services or disservices would decrease with distance from the prairie. We used bird-excluding cages over crops to examine the net effect of birds on corn and soybean grain yield. We also conducted DNA metabarcoding to identify arthropod prey in fecal samples from captured birds. Our exclosure experiments revealed that birds provided net services in corn and net disservices in soybeans. Distance from prairie was not a significant predictor of exclosure treatment effect in either crop. Many bird fecal samples contained DNA from both beneficial arthropods and known economically significant pests of corn, but few economically significant pests of soybeans. Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia), one of our most captured species, most commonly consumed corn rootworms, an economically significant pest of corn crops. We estimated that birds in this system provided a service worth approximately US $275 ha-1 in corn yield gain, and a disservice valued at approximately $348 ha-1 in soybean yield loss. Our study is the first to demonstrate that birds can provide substantial and economically valuable services in field corn, and disservices in soybean crops. The contrasting findings in the 2 crop systems suggest a range of bird impacts within widespread agroecosystems and demonstrate the importance of quantifying net trophic effects.Objectives To present a case of a tibialis anterior muscle herniation in a soccer player. Clinical features A 28-year-old male soccer player presented with a trauma-induced injury to his right anterior shin. After assessment and due to his clinical signs and symptoms, a high suspicion of tibialis anterior muscle herniation was suspected. Intervention and outcomes Diagnostic ultrasound confirmed this diagnosis, and a trial of conservative therapy was recommended. After eight weeks of treatment, he was able to return to sport. Summary A trial of conservative treatment for the tibialis anterior muscle hernia should be included as a part of general treatment strategy prior to any surgical interventions.Introduction Clinical trial registries are used to help improve transparency in trial reporting. Our study aimed to identify potential publication bias in chiropractic and spinal manipulation research by assessing data drawn from published studies listed in clinincaltrials.gov. Methods We searched the clinicaltrials.gov registry database for completed trials tagged with the key indexing terms chiropractic or spinal manipulation. We assessed if the trial registry had been updated with data, then searched for publications corresponding to the registered trials. Finally, the frequency of positive or negative results was determined from published studies. Results For the term 'chiropractic', 63% of studies supported the intervention and 52% supported the intervention for the term 'spinal manipulation'. Discussion Publication bias in chiropractic and spinal manipulation research listed in clinicaltrials.gov appears to occur. Further work may help understand why this happens and what may be done to mitigate this moving forward.Objective To present the clinical case of a patient with an upper extremity superficial venous thrombosis (SVT), and to highlight the importance for clinicians working in musculoskeletal care settings, to considered non-musculoskeletal causes for their patients' presentations. Clinical features A 31-year-old male presented to an academic chiropractic clinic with progressive left sided tension over the medial arm, extending to the anterior aspect of his proximal forearm. Intervention and outcome The patient was initially diagnosed with possible biceps/brachialis muscular strain and peripheral entrapment of the median nerve. click here A course of treatment involving soft tissue therapy was initiated. Unfortunately, the patient's symptoms worsened, and on further evaluation, near full occlusion and phlebitis of the left cephalic vein was discovered. Symptoms dissipated over the next few days with conservative medicinal efforts. Summary Although not often viewed as a serious condition, or factored in the differential diagnoses of musculoskeletal practitioners, to not consider SVT as a cause of a patient's symptoms may lead to a protracted clinical course and increased discomfort for the patient, and in rare cases, more serious consequences.
