Woodpeckers eat insects, berries, nuts and seeds they find on trees and shrubs or at bird feeders. They also excavate cavities in trees and logs to nest in and use man-made cavities, like those found in birdhouses, as roosts in winter. These birds are common visitors to our feeders in Simcoe County.
While you can hang a birdhouse and wait for woodpeckers to come, it is much easier to attract them by providing the right kind of habitat. Woodpeckers prefer open, natural landscapes with a wide variety of trees, including evergreens, that offer protection from wind and weather. In giá tổ yến tinh chế , they need a good supply of insects to feed their young.
Woodpeckers usually look for suitable cavities in dead and dying trees but will use a man-made nest box if it is placed in the right location. You can attract woodpeckers to your yard by installing a nesting box that has an entrance hole about 3 1/2 " tall, sized for their heads. Place the nest box about six to 20 feet high, depending on the species you're trying to attract (see the birdhouse hole size chart).
The easiest way to make a woodpecker house is by using a pre-made wooden birdhouse kit. The kits typically have a 4" by 5" by 8.5" deep box with a hole that is just about the correct size for the woodpecker species you are trying to attract. The kits can be purchased at many birding equipment outlets, home improvement stores and online.
Another option is to build a nesting box yourself using wood scraps you have collected or recycled from your workshop. Cedar is a good choice for woodpecker houses because it is attractive, easy to work, and lasts a long time. You can buy rough cut cedar lumber at most home and farm centers or purchase a pre-cut, exterior-grade wood at a building or hardware store. The wood should be unpainted, and ventilation openings in the floor and under the roof should be provided.
giá yến chưng are another type of nesting structure that is popular with cavity nesters, including Downy and Nuttall's woodpeckers. You can easily make a gourd birdhouse yourself, but you will need to add a metal hook or other means of hanging the structure, as most gourds have a very low center of gravity and will tend to swing unless stabilized. The hook or other support will also help you monitor and maintain the box, as it is important that you clean and disinfect it after each brooding season to prevent disease and parasites from spreading.
To increase the chances of attracting woodpeckers to your home, you should keep your backyard free from pesticides and other chemicals, which will discourage their population. You can also provide food for the birds, such as suet set out in a wire suet feeder (Amazon link). It is also important that you mount the nesting box at the proper height, as woodpeckers are not fond of small, cramped spaces.
